Contenders or Pretenders?
I can't be the only one desparate for a convincing victory. Wins are wins, I understand that much - and winning extra-innings games has not been this teams forte the last few years (maybe some stat-head can give us the real numbers on that; I don't have the time or I'd do it myself), so the three longer-than-regulation game victories are a good sign.
Getting opponents on the mat early and keeping your collective feet on their throats is obviously preferable, but since The Beloved haven't shown a whole heck of a lot of ability to do so, they have to preserve the slight edges they've been carrying into late innings.
This bullpen scares me - Woody's been erratic, and I don't se him being long for that role. Wuertz - what can I say. Even Marmol has been up and down.
When do we stop allaying our fears by reminding ourselves that "it's early"? That works both ways. It's early for the Cards and White Sox, too - two purported cellar-dwellers that are leading their divisions.

Contenders!
LITV,
The bullpen is our strength! All guys out there will have a periodic moment but they have held this season together. We have two weaknesses: Starting pitch is the one that is erratic. Other than Z and Dempster, no one else to rely on. We need to get Lieber in the rotation and then get production from Marshall or Hill (I dont care which one) and Lily. Lou is having to use way too much of the bullpen on a regular basis...we need these guys to eat innings! Second need is CF. Reed is a nice fill and thank God we got him before the season but relying on him and or hoping Pie flips a switch is a bad idea. I think we are contenders but if we want to go to the dance and particularly if we want to win it, then we need more! I think we will have enough to get to the allstar break and be right in the mix but JH needs to do some dealing by then to give us a legit shot to win it all. The time is now to mortgage whatever and get this done.

I've never been sold on Pie.
I've been wrong before, and I'd hate to see him blossom elsewhere. I'd rather trot Johnson out there every day and/or platoon him w/ Fukudome in CF than give Pie too many more at bats in hopes of him turning the corner.

Contenders..
Good lord man, get a grip on yourself. They've got talent, a good manager, and prospects available for trade at the deadline. If the Cubs aren't considered a contender in the NL, then virtually no team is.

If they were going to trade Pie...
...they should have done it last year when his value was at it's peak. Once you bring a guy up and he struggles, his value goes down, because you have exposed the real possibility his minor league prowess, may not translate to the big leagues.
Let's face it, if you are another major league team, you would have given up much more for Pie if you only had AAA numbers to look at.
Now, you either have to hope he starts to produce with the big league club, or you may have to send him back to AAA. The problem is, even if he rips up AAA again, he still has the exposure of being overmatched in the big leagues on his resume.

Not to be contrarian,
and I'm not a stat guy, but how patient (in relation to number of starts, at bats, etc.) are other organizations with their up-an-comers that are forced to take prominent roles in the lineup (well, maybe not so prominent in the lineup) and on the field, especially when there are WS hopes (indeed, expectations)?
I'm thinking this isn't the season to focus on or be distracted by Pie's development.

Here's the deal...
...although many on this board want him to start something like 20 out of 25 games to see what he can do, it's just not going to happen. Depending on how he does, he will get his playing time, but it will likely be more like half of the games unless he catches fire.
IMO, Lou has very little confidence in Pie doing what they need their CF to do in 08. Some will be critical of Lou for not letting him play more and others will think it's the right thing. But, after all the talk of Dusty playing guys for too long when they were not producing, you won't get that from Piniella.
There are two guys that Piniella has minimal faith in, but gives them playing time to because he has no better option - Pie and Marquis. I happen to agree with him if that is indeed the way he feels. And I know they have Leiber, but he is forced to use Marquis to maintain his trade value, at least for now.

Definitely Pretenders...
Hendry is going to have to make some deals asap if this team is going to have any realistic chance of making a run. As it stands right now, the Cubs simply have too many holes to be considered a legitimate contender. I'm not saying that they can't get into the playoffs with the current team (although I wouldn't necessarily bank on it) but I think we're probably looking at another three and out.
What I don't get is why Hendry would be so reluctant to trade prospects. He has to realize that if the Cubs bomb out again this season, his career as a gm is essentially over. Plus, the Cubs ability to evaluate and/or develop young talent hasn't exactly been encouraging over the last several years. There's basically nobody in the system who I'd say is untouchable if the right deal came along.
He's worked magic in the past and so I'm still holding out hope that he can do it again.
As for the prospect of trading Felix Pie-at this point his poor showing in the majors has probably negatively affected his trade value. I'm not saying they couldn't deal him, but I can't believe other teams are going to give up a lot for a guy who is, at best, a project.

with the spirit of Christ. That's new.
Really, all joking aside, let me suggest an idea. It's an off day. Go watch Monday Night Baseball tonight. Or if you have a few bucks, splurge on MLB.tv. Maybe even indulge in Baseball Prospectus or Baseball America. See, the thng is when you start looking around the league -- and I mean really watching some games, or going a little deeper with the competition, you find everybody has holes. Problems. Issues. Most in the NL wish they could be the Cubs. Just look at the Mets, who are actually counting on Nelson Figuerora for starts. I can't even say it without giggling.
Relax a little. It's a LONG season.

OK everyone.
Eternal optimists are great. No one wants the Cubs to win more than I. But if you can't take a step back and look at something other than stats, then I can't help ya.
Did anyone read the part about wanting a convincing victory? This team is supposed to have been built for offense. How's that working out? I know, I know - "It's early". That's my point - who says a team's bats can't be hot early? Not the White Sux or D-Backs. They can't miss the ball. Ramirez is lazy and Soriano is stubborn and selfish.
All I'm asking of any of you Pie-in-the-sky-ers is to be objective.
And Wuertz giving up three HRs is not a good thing, you know that, right?
And Wood is hot-or-cold - you need to be able to rely on the closer, and right now, we can't do that.

I am trying to take a step back and in all honesty I don't see that many gaping holes. Alright, so our SS and CF are not the best in the league. We don't need them to be at this point. Ramirez and Sori are going to get going and once those two, Lee and Dome, Derosa and Soto are all hitting, we will have no problem scoring runs. We won't need Theriot and Pie to be extra-ordinary or have career years.
Our bullpen will be our strength, provided Lou isn't forced to continue to over tax them this early in the season. Wuertz has only given up one home run, but 3 earned runs. Plus, he has only walked one and struck out five. So he hasn't been wild, his slider just wasn't quite right this last time out, it'll come around, it always does. Wood has been solid thus far, except for his first outing. He has a 2.25 era, excluding that first outing.
The only hole that I see is the starting pitching. Like others, I don't think that Lilly and Hill are this bad (although Hill really needs to throw a good game soon to salvage his confidence). However, that doesn't mean that it isn't a hole. Zambrano is a solid #1 starter, after him, though, it seems like we have a series of #3-#4 type pitchers. If we need anything at the trading deadline, which admittedly is a ways away, we need a top of the rotation starter.

Let me clarify one thing -
I think the Cubs will win their division.
I know that Soriano's bat will wake up so he can hit a bunch of solo HRs and knock in 70 runs again (when that number would be 30 or so higher id he'd suck it up and learn to bat in the middle of the lineup). However, I have doubts about Ramirez. He doesn't seem all there.
And the rotation is a mess (minus Z and Dempster). Lilly's very sucky so far. Marquis is unimpressive, too. 4 or 5 innings from your SP is murder on your bullpen.

In 2007
at 12 games in we were 5-7, runs scored: 43, runs allowed 42.
Currently we are 7-5, having scored 59 runs, and allowing 60 runs.
What does that say? Well, for one thing, IT'S NOT OUR HITTING. It's our pitching.
But secondly, since the RF and RA are even in both instances, what it tells me is that we are winning the close games. The 1 and 2 run games.
What else does it say? Not much people. Only that there are 150 GAMES LEFT.

Wow
Yet another diary from a ledge jumper. How can you people enjoy a baseball season? Yes, the Cubs have problems. Hopefully some will get addressed but I can guarantee that Hendry won't get a new CF, a new SS, 2 new starting pitchers plus TPWSNBN during the season. They are not ever going to be a perfect team. Soriano is always going to swing at bad pitches.
There will be ups and downs, hopefully more ups than downs but enjoy it. It's baseball, the best sport around. Sweating over every little problem won't result in anything but ulcers.

I don't understand
How people can look at a team right now and predict with any certainty how a team is going to fare in a series in October.
In recent memory it seems rare that the teams winning the world series were "supposed" to win it. Just ask Joe Torre. Injuries happen, players develop, and schedules get weaker and stronger as the season plays out. It seems to me that if a team is good enough to get into the post-season, they are good enough to win the world series. Since 1990, the team that has won the most games in baseball has only won the world series 3 times (in 17 tries). That is almost a 1 in 6 chance for the best team. The playoff team with the worst record has also won 3 times in the same span. To me that points to the fact that once you get into the postseason, anything can happen.
We have a team that has a good shot at making the postseason. This isn't going to happen every year. Let's enjoy this year and let the story unfold.

Al talked about this several times towards the end of last season....the big thing is to be good enough to be in the hunt, and then get hot at the right moment.
I will say that last year's Red Sox had a certain machine-like quality that just seemed to mark them as a Team of Destiny, but it's pretty unusual for that to happen. I think they had fewer holes than any team I've ever seen in four decades of watching baseball (despite having, as Hammer noted, Mr. Crisp in CF...he's actually pretty good with the glove).

We are only two weeks into the season. Every team in the league is going to have at least two bad weeks during the year and many mediocre weeks. Personally, I won't even look at the division standings until May because you just can't glean any slightly useful info until then. For all of you east coast fans (and ESPN viewers), you can recall all of the statements in May and June last year claiming that the Yankees were not playoff bound. They went' on to have a stunning second half as always and played games in October. No need to panic or worry yet. Just watch the games and enjoy them.

The whole thread is NUTS....as in what Gen McAuliffe said in Bastogne
Contenders or Pretenders on April 14th? Come on we are only 12 games into the season, there are 150 games left.
Some history, back in 2003 I told Al that on July 15th we needed to pack it in and wave the white flag, then Z hit a HR and beat Houston and the Cubs went onto the playoffs. Last year the Cubs were 10 games under 500 on May 30th and they turned the season around and won the division.
This team is not set, they have one fantastic strength, the bullpen. Lilly and Hill are not right, there are a bunch of starts to get them right. They have a reborn Lieber sitting ready to come in and perform while Z and Dempster look right.
What they are missing are two essential players up the middle while three utility/platoon players are in their stead. I actually think SS is more important than CF. If not Pie, than the Cubs have options, move Kosuke over and play DeRosa or recall Murton or bring up Patterson and play Johnson in a platoon.
SS is a problem in that a lighter hitting Theriot is not the defensive SS, but my bet is that Vizquel will be available in May and he could be an interesting insert.
Ask that impatient question September 1st and enjoy the ride.

Vizquel, ugh.
41 years old, injured, had a crappy year in 2007. No thanks.

Vizquel is on the DL.
Following knee surgery.
If you want to bet that Vizquel can continue being one of the best defensive players in baseball following knee surgery, great. But if Vizquel can't play defense, he is absolutely worthless. And so if he loses a step or two because his knee isn't 100%, he absolutely runs away with "worst shortstop in baseball" honors.
Oh, and did I mention he's in his 40s?

Correct and why sometime in mid-May to June 15th he might be available
The suggestion is to look at Vizquel as a potential stop-gap SS insert, even platoon insert at SS if he in fact heals to the degree that he can play SS at the level or close to it that he did last year. His knee injury was a torn meniscus (cartilage) where one report stated it was removed and he would be out 4-to-6 weeks from March 1st.
First officially he cannot be traded without his permission until June 15th, but he has a safe hanging over his head, he signed a $5M deal with a $5.2M 2009 option that makes it good if he plays in 140 games….he has suspended his minor league rehab at last report-—suggesting that he will probably not be back until May 1st at the earliest—meaning that the Giants will probably have played 28-30 games making the 140 game option out.
The Giants in all likelihood will finish near the bottom this year and have two young SS’s.
The question is not whether Vizquel who is 41 is too old, the question is can he play, and more so, can he play the last half of the season either in an effective platoon or start. In all likelihood even with the knee injury he will not be able to play everyday so the deal could also be very cheap, like Cubs get the $300,000 option for next year and send off a minor prospect.
Finally it is my opinion that slowly Cedeno is earning the starting SS spot. He has been since last September with getting some offense and good defensive play outside his stupid stuff.

Hmmm....
(scratching her head)
Sori is batting .175
Ramy is batting .234
Riot is batting .244 with a .326 OBP
Lilly has a 9.95 ERA
Howry has an 8.59 ERA
Hill has a 5.00 ERA
And this team is 7-5. They have a winning record with most of their mainstays off to slow starts.
They have a winning record and the best is yet to come.
I admit that I don't have much faith in Riot or Pie, but if the other guys get it going, (and I firmly believe they will), this will be a very good team.
Ask the question again at the ASB.

Sky is the limit
Winning in extra innings is ok. Even breaks like yesterday's can go for or against a team on a given day and will probably even out before this is over.
The way I see it, injuries and / or outsmarting themselves are the ways this team could flounder and disappoint. If this team can play this bad and still be 7-5, or even .500 had they lost yesterday, then the sky is the limit. Lou has to take out the starting pitcher before the game gets away and avoid getting too creative with his lineups.

now i'm no math major...
but our current winning percentage is about .583.
which projects to 94 wins.
so if we're going to be over-reacting about early season trends...shouldn't we be celebrating what is obviously the beginning of a fantastic season? shoot, i'd take 94 wins in a heart beat...

This makes me so happy
This makes me so happy they won those 3 extra inning games.
I walk by the Sears Tower every day. Would be worried about being hit by all the people jumping off of it.
We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

Contenders
Soriano, Ramirez will get untracked.
Lilly will end up winning 14 games
Wood will get 30 saves and win 6 games
Now, Hill, Theriot, Pie and Marmol, all keys to this team winning 93 games or winning 82 games. They have no past, we can only hope.
These players need to perform, and as of right now, way early, only Marmol has been decent.
I like this team, but some trends are carrying themselves over from last year, can't lay a sac. bunt down, screwing up a double steal, 3 up and 3 down in a inning and Cub hitters seeing maybe 7 pitches, shoddy "D", and the overuse of the bullpen.
Lets see if they can get corrected, if not, it will be a bumpy ride.

David DeJesus
Another name that might come up in the pursuit to upgrade center field AND help the top of the lineup. Kansas City likes Joey Gathright in center and may be amicable to eventually moving DeJesus, albeit for the right price.

Could be an option...
...he has pretty good offensive numbers and a servicable OBP for leadoff.
It is going to be interesting to see how quickly Piniella pushes Hendry to get him a leadoff guy. I just can't see him sitting idle until the deadline to wait for this missing piece. Being the offensive mind that he is, you would think going since the beginning of last year without a legit leadoff hitter, has got to be wearing on him.

My point is that most of these posts are innocuous little
“Hey, I love the Cubs – do you?” strains of glad-handing, No one ever calls the Cubs out on stupid, stubborn activity (such as developing Pie as opposed to signing or trading for a decent replacement. However, the signing of Johnson has perked my ears a bit. Very smart move; seemingly one that says that the club understands that Pie is not the man for the job

I agree
He needs more ab’s. If Lou can’t give him any ab’s, he needs to be sent down to AAA then to get them. Him riding the pine and used only as a decoy like he was yesterday, is not doing him or the Cubs any good. He hasn’t even been used as a Defensive replacement I don’t think. Murton would be a better option off the bench as a PH or spot start in RF or maybe even Patterson.
No matter which way you slice it though, this situation with Pie is a difficult and sensitive one. It’d be great if Pie could start taking advantage of his starts and start hitting or atleast not looking so bad with his ab’s. I think that would make everyone happy.

Both the Indians and Tigers need bullpen help
Burowski blew another save tonight and even though he lead the league in Saves last year, I imagine the Indians would entertain offers for another possible closer. How 'bout Howry, Cedeno and Murton for Peralta and a mid level prospect?
Tigers pen is in total shambles and would entertain offers as well. Wonder what it'd take to get Carlos Guillen? Most likely too much.

can't see it
the indians aren't giving up peralta. and frankly, betancourt has been the best guy in that bullpen for 2 years now. they'll just slide him into the 9th and look for someone else to add to the pen while borowski gets to visit the DL...

Borowski could be heading to DL
Just saw how he’s getting his arm checked out. I agree that Betancourt would slide into the closer spot but their bullpen is less than deep. I also agree that they wouldn’t trade Peralta. Plus he’s locked up until 2011 with a player option in 2012. He ain’t ging anywhere. Just kind of tossed that idea out there.
On the other hand,SS Josh Rodriguez is struggling in AA but I still think he’s still a decent prospect. Wonder if Wuertz would be enough for him. Not that I would expect him to contribute this year but the Cubs have zero in the way of SS prospects.

In other Cub related news
According to AZ Phil over at the Cub Reporter, Chad Fox threw 2 scoreless and hitless (35 pitches-21 strikes)innings against team China. Aparently he was throwing the ball pretty good and could be 2-3 weeks away to being ready, if everything goes according to plans. It’d could get interesting if he sails through his rehab.

One way to look at it
Last year we found ways to lose games. This year we’ve played poorly in all but about two of our games, and we just came off a winning road trip. We’ve won two or three games we’ve had no business winning.
Provided the starting pitching gets lined out, I have to think our record will improve dramatically. This team on paper should be better defensively than last year’s, so I’m sure the defense will improve. We’re scoring a few runs even though some of our big producers aren’t hitting a lick.
As long as we get the starters ironed out, I think we’re in good shape.
