Some Offday Fun - Favorite Ballpark Food
I'm sure everyone has an opinion on this one. Whether it's Dodger Dogs or Fenway Sausages, we all have our favorites. Personally, I'm not that big a fan of the food at Wrigley. I usually make a stop at Gene and Judes first to bring a few of my favorite hot dogs to the games. A classic Chicago dog that comes with fresh cut greasy fries...hmmmm..can't beat em with a cold Old Style! So, what's your fave?

The Brats
at Miller Park. Excellent.
And no one beats the beer selection in S.D. I like my Old Style, but watching a game in the Cali sun while sipping a cold Pacifico is a little slice of alright.

Those brats...
... have to be had with the Secret Stadium Sauce.
And yes, if you have never been to Miller Park (or its predecessor County Stadium), they really do call it "Secret Stadium Sauce".

I beg to differ...
The brats are excellent, I'll grant you that - probably the best of any ballpark I've been to, and the "Secret Stadium Sauce" is good, but if you really want to do it right, you've got to...

garlic fries and dodger dogs...
I guess my favorite would be the garlic fries in San Francisco, which have the added benefit of the making the stands smell great (or horrid if you don't like the smell of garlic). Mostly though, I find that the even the special "signature" food items that seem to be sold at most parks are both underwhelming and, of course, overpriced.
I've never been to Dodger Stadium but I've always heard people go on and on about Dodger Dogs. Are they really that good? Why? Are they laced with crack? I've never understood it, somebody please enlighten me.

Dodger Dogs
In my opinion, the people who think Dodger dogs are the best are the ones who have never had a real Chicago dog. If you have never had a Dodger dog don’t worry about it because you are not missing anything.

exacty
Had em twice and for California, it’s fine. But in Chicago, well unless they’re cheap my guess is the folks selling them would go out of business.
It’s like going to Canada for deep dish pizza or Utah for an Italian beef sammich. They’re only simulations and there’s only one original.
I’m really not big into speciality foods at ballparks, though I have to say again, I’ve never found anything displeasing at Comiskey. I’m only there 2-3 times a year (guess which games) and it’s always a good thing. I rarely buy anything at Miller Park as we always tailgate there.
And the first time I was in the old LA Forum the sushi craze was hitting its peak…and at a hockey game….. There were hundreds of these So.Cal’ers getting sushi and Perrier, yuk. At a hockey game, are you kidding me? I forgot which little corner stand I had to go to in order to get a hot dog and a Coors light…Of course I couldn’t find a Molson, Moosehead, LaBatt or even a Bud.

Wrigley FTW
Specifically, the Bests Kosher Hot Dogs... yes, they are different from the dogs sold at the regular concession stands, and most of the ones that are brought to your seat... but sprinkled throughout the park are the Bests Kosher stands and those are by far the best ballpark food I've had...

Rocky Mountain Oysters at Coors Field. Nuff said. Slurped em down in the rock pile while watching the Cubbies win last summer. Maybe slurped is the wrong word for Rocky Mountain Oysters.

At Wrigley, I gotta go with the
Italian Beef/Sausage Combo with sweet and hot peppers, mainly 'cause I can't get it here in Tennessee (obviously). And that's probably a good thing, or I'd be dead of a heart attack already.

Have they changed the combo this season?
I had one from the upper deck patio on April 4th. The sausage was retrieved from a bin, not the grill. The beef tasted like plastic. The giardinerra (sp?) was ground up to the same consistency as relish. I hope they go back to the old version.

Best food at Miller Park is
what we grill during tailgating. Inside, we’ve tried the brats and I swear they were left overs from the previous series.
Wrigley? Let’s just say they’re still recovering from the Aramark “experience”. What an awful foodservice organization. Best’s Kosher on the bleacher mid-level is about the best there. Must…..get…...grilled…...onions…...
Don’t know about the main stadium area as I’m never there.
And of course I hate to say it, Comiskey is way better than Wrigley. My favorite is the Beltin’ Bill Melton sausages.

yes, they are
and I’m having my wedding reception at Wrigley later this season so I’m crossing my fingers that the Levy catering experience overrides their typical ballpark fare. We’ll get to do some ‘tastings’ coming up so I’m looking forward to that. Although they do have the “Wrigley 1914 Classic” as one of their menu options (Kosher-style hot dogs and Italian sausage and beef are the leadoff entrees), we’re probably going to go with some of their more upscale selections. Last thing I need to see/hear about is Aunt Jeannie in her Sunday best with half an italian beef dripping down the front of her dress… ;-)

Sushi for Nomo, what for Dome?
It was pretty impressive when I saw packaged Sushi was sold at Dodger stadium when Hideo Nomo made a big tornado in MLB back in 1995. Dodger salesclerks wore happi and selling sushi to Nomomania around in the stand. Looked quite unusual.
So what food for Dome at Wrigley this time? :-)
BTW Dome produced some stadium foods at Nagoya dome in recent years. That’s “Ankake sauce” spaghetti, one of famous taste of Nagoya, and curry – called “Kosuke spaghetti” and “Kosuke Curry”, sold at a restaurant in the ballpark and by mail order. He actively joined cooking and gave his direction for his favorite taste.

Wrigley Food?
I’m not a big fan of the food at Wrigley. Usually, when I go to the games with my dad, we have lunch at Tuscany first and then go into the park. When I’m with friends, one friend usually brings Jimmy Johns sandwiches. Which brings me to a funny Spring Training story.
I was out on the berm at Mesa taking in the atmosphere when three young women sitting near me started talking. One was so excited and was telling her friends that there’s now a Jimmy John’s inside Wrigley Field. The friends wanted to know where but she didn’t know. She knew there was one because she had seen some people in the bleachers eating them many times.
I chimed in and told her there was no Jimmy John’s inside Wrigley and she swore there was she had seen people eating them. I told her I was one of those people and a friend brought them to the park for us. She refused to believe me.
I’m sure she’ll be looking for the non-existent Jimmy John’s at Wrigley this year and will be totally confused when she sees my friends and me eating them.

A different sport but still a stadium......
I am from the Orlando FL area and I agree with most of your food selections, at least the ones that I have tried. Those that I haven’t sound great and I hope to get to try them sometime soon.
If any of you are in the Orlando area during NBA basketball season, then you must….MUST go to a Magic game at the Orlando O-rena (screw Amway) and have a steak sandwhich. Bascially it is your choice of sliced Filet or NY Strip on some sort of hoagie roll with choice of cheese and Horsey sauce. Its an $8 dollar sandwhich but they cook and cut the steak right in front of you. Hard to find a sandwhich better than this for the price at a local restaurant much less at a stadium that sells 20oz beers for the same price.
Anyway, this might not be a “signature” food of O-town (dont think we have one)but it is absolutely glorious.

Barzun
Thanks Al. I remember hearing the quote when the Ken Burns documentary “Baseball” first aired on PBS. Still rings true today..

"The only paradise is paradise lost."
Didn’t Proust say that at the end of the 2003 season?

But I bet he would have.

I have a book
I have a book that has quotations that people never made but they could make.
Has Job saying “Let’s Go Cubs!”

Smokies are good. Hebrew nationals are the BEST at Wrigley but the buns are always stale...ALWAYS.
Comiskey has much better food despite the Levy similarity.
Calm down.

I have to say...
...I’m a fan of the plain old hot dogs at wrigley. IIRC they’re Armour. I just get ‘em plain. Too much trouble to be dressing up a hot dog at the ballpark. The fries at Wrigley may be some of the worst on the planet, although my godson likes them.

The Best Ballpark Food
I’ve ever had are the Rendezvous BBQ Nachos at Autozone Park, home of the Memphis Redbirds. I’m drooling just thinking about them.
For the majors, I’d have to go with the Primanti Bros. Capicola sandwich in Pittsburgh – one of the top 5 sandwiches I’ve ever had (ballpark or otherwise).
The brats in Milwaukee are high on my list, as are the dogs at the Schaumburg Flyers games.
The WORST: The free pizza I got with my family section ticket in the Minnesota Dumperdome. The cardboard box probably had more flavor than the pizza did. It was the only time in my life I threw away pizza.
This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

I'm a hot dog
I’m a hot dog girl. Gosh that sounds dirty :).
I wonder if the Cubs would ever consider letting a couple of well known local chains open up concession stands like Jimmy Johns.
I love Jimmy Johns. Them and Potbellys beat Subway from here to Tuesday.

That would be great but....
Levy restaurants has the concessions contract at Wrigley so unfortunately that won’t happen, I love Levy’s food but a Portillo’s or a Jimmy John’s would def put Wrigley’s food at the top of the list

Interesting
Interestingly Wolves and Rush food prices are nearly as or as high as Wrigley.

There should be a disclaimer...
about not looking at this thread when you’re hungry. This is killing me. But back on topic, I’ve many good things about the corn at the Cell, but am yet to make my way to a stand there to try it myself. From personal experience, it’s hard to beat the cheese fries in a helmet at Miller Park. Mmmm…

The local park here
(Slugger Field, Louisville Bats) has some killer fried baloney sandwiches. You can get them with fried onions and add peppers, tomatoes, pickles, etc. (Small, shameless plug if you’re ever there, I’m director for a non-profit booster group that runs that stand, sec 114, right behind home plate). They’ve also added jalapeno dogs as well as the usual brats, footlongs, philly cheese steaks. It’s run by Centerplate, as is all the UofL and fairground properties. Levy’s runs the Churchill Downs concessions.

The baloney is our biggest seller
for an AAA park, we sell hundreds of those a night. The new jalapeno dogs are selling pretty well too. The first time I saw the fried baloney I was like “wheat the hell is that”. Must be a midwest thing. There’s a line for them as soon as the gates open. Weird. They are very good, though.

Never actually had them at the park
but the D’Backs serve what they call Arizona dogs. The RedEye did a special on them last year. Hot dog (which I of course bought from Paulina Market), nacho cheese, chorizo, and crumbled tortilla chips. Absolutely delicious.

Boiled Peanuts
At Greenville Braves games in South Carolina we used to eat noiled peanuts by the barrel full.
