2008 Cubs: Why Beat A Team in Regulation, when you can beat them in extras?
what i think the cubs need to do
1st of all we need to take pie and either put him in AAA or trade him all together. we need to drop him before we waste the time on him with no improvement like corey patterson. then murton needs to come up if he isn’t about to already cause of sori. cedeno is not much better either. yes better then pie but dont think he helps the team much unless he is a pinch runner. we still have fontenot who can play back up ss. pie is ok at defense but couldn’t hit a little league pitcher. they’re just a pile of cedeno.
Zambrano taking a mean cut at the first pitch
then later drops a base hit in front of Dunn. runner at 1st, 1 out.

First pitch to Fontenot
registered 94 mph. Second was also 94, 0-2 count. Ball outside, 93. Steady diet of fastballs here for Fontenot. Fouls off an 80 mph curve. Failed check swing on 81 mph curve in the dirt. 2 out.

We're creaming them 10-1.
DLee had a nice homer. Z’s had a couple hits. Dome’s singled. Lots of other nice things.

Yes, because if you know anything about me...
...it’s that I base all of my opinions on a player’s batting average, especially after only 49 at-bats. You really caught me there!
Cwyer will just respond that it is still a small statistical sample
and then probably start talking about p-values and cusums and chi-squared distributions. Let’s just enjoy the game.
It is a small statistical sample.
It also completely ignores anything that isn’t batting average – walks, extra base hits, fielding prowess… it’s essentially meaningless. The fact that the phrase “small sample size” annoys some people doesn’t make it any less true.
True but
he is swinging the bat a lot better. I think that bunt single was a sign. I think when people make heady plays or have great fielding plays, it shows that they are “on” and into the game. Like Aramis being cold and having his throwing problems. And Lee beeing a monster both fielding and hitting. And Soto finally throwing someone out stealing, and getting hot with the bat. Would explain why it seems like a web gem is often followed by a good at bat.
by californiachicagoan on Apr 16, 2008 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions
If he went 0-for-4 tonight...
...would you be saying he was swinging the bat better?
Things cluster in baseball. Just because probabilities aren’t distributed evenly throughout a sample of events, doesn’t mean there’s a rhyme or reason to it. People try to assert the existence of patterns when really all there is is the noise of random chance.
That’s why sample size is important. Because it keeps us from drawing conclusions from the data based upon a fluke occurance.
Maybe they don't like the connotation
of small sample size! :)

Probably
they threw the ball (or one closely resembling it) back onto the field.

i was at the game...
after Dunn’s homerun, a ball came on the field from Sheffield, immediately, a second ball followed onto the field from Sheffield too.
then, someone from the right field bleachers threw a ball on the field, and this started a chain reaction, there was literally about 8 balls thrown onto the field.

Patterson has been getting a lot of cheers.
Good for him. Wonder if Corey has a little sibling rivalry.
Showing up late last September for a game
That’s why he got sent down and Fuld, who never would have even sniffed Chicago most likely, got called up.

Kevin Hart
I got his autograph at the Cubs Caravan because no one was in his line and I felt bad for him.
Now, I’m pretty glad I have it. He hasn’t been amazing tonight but he’s a good addition to the bullpen.
[I got a pic with the Riot too, but who cares about him, right?]

Ha… ...April’s fun!
If the Cubs were an international soccer team they'd be called Scotland.
Good afternoon to you!

i’d be sooooooo lost it wouldn’t even be funny. What a nice addition though. I’m really curious to see the reaction for Dome when we hit the west coast, mainly San Fran and LA.

Seattle announcers making fun of Soriano
“What was he thinking? He hurt himself skipping and jumping after a catch. I mean it was the 3rd out of the inning. How would you like to face Lou Pinella after turning your ankle playing around? If he would have run into a wall or diving I can see it, but skipping after a 3rd out catch?”
geezzz
SOMEONE SHOOT THAT DAMN PARROT!!!
"What was he thinking?" Nothing, I guess.
If Soriano’s baseball IQ were that good, he wouldn’t hop to catch a fly ball. Now we know why it shouldn’t be done. Hopping not only takes your eyes off the ball but you can also get hurt. My bet is he won’t do it anymore. We’ll see.

Dragon...
Earlier you asked if you get the person who throws the ball back on the field would get ejected from the game, correct?
It is Wrigley tradition that if an opposing team hits a HR, you throw the ball back (or just throw a ball back, not necessarily the same ball if you want to keep it). So no, the thrower would not get ejected.
Thanks, but...
how about if visitor’s team fan throw the ball back after a Cub hit a HR? ;-)

That fan would probably not ever sit in the bleachers again.
His experiences there would permanently scar his psyche…

It's All Big Z, Behavior After Dunn HR Not Funny
Big Z pitched well and got 3 hits. Nothing more to write than he had an amazing game. Maybe having one baseball thrown from the bleachers onto the field might have been funny given that Dunn’s HR ball ended up on Sheffield. We didn’t IMMEDIATELY know if the HR ball was going to be retrieved and thrown back onto the field. Throwing all those baseballs onto the field was overkill. It’s was more “not funny” than it was “retarded”.
