Matt Murton Instead of Eric Patterson

I think Lou should have called up Matt Murton instead of Eric Patterson and then started Fukudome in center, DeRosa in right and Murton in left. First off,  they really don't need any more infielders. Secondly, Murton is a very underrated player and a lot of people forget that he has a .296 career batting average. Thirdly, Lou can also start Michael Fontenot on a daily basis at second and put him and Theriot one two in the lineup. What do you guys think?

I think...

it shows what the Cub organization REALLY thinks of Mr. Murton!

I like the guy as a player, but he is a square peg trying to fit into a round hole in Chicago.

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

Patterson's not really an infielder

He butchered 2B so badly, that they moved him to the OF. Kind of like someone else who used to play 2B.

Except...

...he’s played almost every game this year at Iowa at 2B.

After DeRo's outfield performances the past few games

I wouldnt bet against Murton coming up.

Fukudome is NOT going to play center

He signed with the stipulation that he would play RF. Why mess up a good thing?

One game

I think having a player play one game at a position does not mean they should be moved for an extended period of time.

The promise has been broken so I say let it ride. If he was a real team mate he’d play anywhere the team needed him. I dont think he’s needed in CF but I’m just say’n.

Sigh.

Fukudome is a plus RF. DeRosa is decent out there. Why hurt your defense at a position?

DeRosa is just fine in LF. I don’t mind the lineup they put out there last night—especially since it generated 12 runs.

If they’d hit Fukudome 2nd, they’d have it just about right.

But Al

He is proving to me a run producer. You say why mess with a good thing with him in RF, well why mess with a good thing with him hitting 5?

Because he might be more useful batting second...

... on base all the time in front of Lee and Ramirez.

Soto could hit fifth. He’s become a run producer, too.

True

Soto is really impressing me. Discipline at the plate and that fact that he hits the ball really REALLY HARD

Fukudome...

...was born to hit second. He has no problem hitting with 2 strikes, will let the leadoff guy steal a base and can hook the ball over to the hole vacated by the 1st baseman.

He’ll get there eventually, and he will help the team most in that spot.

Wher did you get that?

If I recall it was either reported on TV or on the web that Fukudome said he had no problem playing CF if need be.

by ak123 on Apr 16, 2008 11:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

One of the reason he signed with the Cubs

is that they could guarantee him right field.

I don't think...

...it will void his contract, if he plays 10-12 games in CF this year.

And he probably will do that.

I think the discussion here was aimed at moving him to CF full-time, which would be a really bad idea.

Small sample size

and I’m sure no correlation, and I may be wrong, but I think that was the only game this year he didn’t get on base at least once. I’m sure that he would play there and not make a peep about it, but why do that to one of our top players? Leave him where he is comfortable, we have Johnson who can play center.

I'm sure Piniella had some input

but Hendry had the final say as to who got called up.

Once Piniella decided that Fontenot was going to play second and DeRosa left, the decision became clear that Patterson was the one to call up. You don’t want to call up Murton to have him sit on the bench.

Personally, I would have called up Murton AND Patterson and sent Fontenot down to Iowa. DeRosa would stay at second, Murton would play left and Patterson would back them both up. Fontenot is really useless as a backup as he only plays one position. (He’s lucky the guy he backs up plays five.) And the difference in hitting ability between Fontenot and Patterson doesn’t justify keeping the one who only plays one position.

Murton only plays one position too

I find it hard to justify sending down Fontenot for only playing one position when you would bring Murton, who only plays on position, up. Besides, Lou obviously likes Fontenot.

by dr stabbingworth on Apr 17, 2008 7:56 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

True, but Murton is the better hitter...

If you’re going to have a guy who can only play one position, at least go with the one who can hit better.

by SouthernCub on Apr 17, 2008 8:11 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Lou remembers...

...the hot streak that Fontenot had last year when he got some playing time. He also likes the other LH bat in the lineup and he is hoping Fontenot can produce again for a few weeks.

On another site

On another site someone claimed to have inside info Pinella has a superstition about redheads or doesn’t like them.

Wel then Ryan Dempster better watch out!

We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

I can't help myself

I posted this in a different thread but it’s too funny and every time somebody mentions Murton being red-headed, it’s the first thing I think of.

It's not about Murton not being liked

It’s a left-handed bat and more defensive flexibility that is needed.

by blackhawk24 on Apr 17, 2008 6:36 AM CDT   0 recs

Hear here.

I have no response to that.

by stelmodad on Apr 17, 2008 6:51 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Patterson

I think with Eric Patterson, you get more speed and IF they plan on playing him off the bench, that is what you want.
He also has the ability to play INF or OF if necessary. Murton cannot play INF.

trade murton!

by ragamuffindaniel on Apr 17, 2008 7:19 AM CDT   0 recs

Like? come on...."there is no crying in baseball"

Back in 2005 when Murton arrived he had the promise of a .320 hitter with a 20+HR….at least .950 OPS young player, ‘06 he showed he was an above average MLB hitter in a power position roughly .290 12-15-HR and .850 OPS…in ‘07 that would be alright if Soriano who is a .950+ OPS hitter could play CF and therefore trading positions…that didn’t work out where Soriano was moved to LF making Murton a RF platoon player in another power position.

As a bench player he is more marginal; his defense is at best average (being kind), his baserunning speed is at best average, he is right-handed and he can only play 2 corner OF positions. He has work to do to make himself a viable & valuable MLB player, (unfair to those who like him from a distance, possibly because of his red top hair), but the marketplace also has validated this consideration. Where are the suiters?

Patterson on the other hand has value especially for bench, he has speed (real baserunning/stealing speed), he bats from the left side and he can play (marginally) more than one position on the diamond, 2B and OF.

Originally I thought the Cubs might go in this direction when Soriano went down because of DeRosa, even if DeRosa might butcher the position for a few games since Piniella can use the time to get DeRosa acquainted with the OF again. It also allows Piniella to play Fontenot more who has earned playing time and get another LH bat in the lineup regularly.

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

Why change something that is working?

I feel the lineup should stay as is. They are playing good ball right now and there is no reason to mess with it. They need to just make sure to win every series for the rest of the month(there isn’t many good teams until the Brewers).

They need to get Sori back and hopefully get a little bit more of a spark in May and then win, what is looking like, a tough series with the Cards. Don’t fix it if it aint broke, and it is hard to say a team is doing something wrong when they have won 8 out of 10.

by dus22 on Apr 17, 2008 8:44 AM CDT   0 recs

Gotta wonder if...

Patterson was called up so he could share the field with his brother? Maybe the Cubs will call up Murton now…

If you play Defender I could be your hyper-space.

I would even take Fuld

over Patterson. Take a look at Patterson’s BB/K ration this season in Minor Leagues. That’s all we need is another free swinging rookie who won’t be able to hit major league pitching.

Is it too late to trade for Roberts?

by SETX Cub on Apr 17, 2008 9:48 AM CDT   0 recs

Not too late for the trade

But if you want to talk numbers, Fulds are worse in AAA

Cubs colored fireworks signify a Cubbies Win at Wrigley West.

Actually, there was a patriotic fireworks display after the game. I don't say this as an Oakland A's fan, but I'll tell you without reservation that fireworks games are better at the Oakland Colisseum.

Tonight's fireworks were over the bay and into the fog. Also, the best audio is inside the stadium while the best views are outside of it.

Usually in Oakland, people are let on the field, the speaker pump music through the stadium, and fireworks are shot overhead from the bridge that connects the stadium to the BART trains.

Long story short--come for the cubs v. giants game, leave for the train ASAP.
Raise that victory flag over Wrigley West!
CUBS WIN!!

Kerry Wood just struck out Fred Lewis despite giving up a triple to Bengie Molina. It was a close call for a slugfest of a game!

There's nothing like having the true blue fans rise up and cheer on our road warriors.
This is the right field wall that separates McCovey Cove and the stadium. Can you pick out all the blue in the stands? I nominate this place as Wrigley West--just grow soe Wrigleyville ivy on those bricks!

Fact: There is a splash hit counter toward the other end of the wall, and it only counts homers hit into the bay by SF Giants. They call them "legitimate splash hits."

What a crock!
It was Veterans Appreciation Day at AT&T Park, hence the military band and flag bearers. It was cool to see SF legend Willie Mays get honored for his military service.
