Brennaman (Bitterman)

I'll admit i wasn't able to watch any of the Cincy series (Gameday only), and i didn't hear about the HR fiasco from last night until this morning. I probably would've been laughing with Theriot if i was there, but agree with Al that 15-20 was a little much.  Just a prank gone a little too long...But check this out....

Guy's got some pent up frustration he clearly needs to address....

Not Necessary

for Brennamen to rip into the Cubs because of the actions of some pranksters in the bleachers. Brennamen and Brantley were acting as if that happens all the time- it doesn’t. And besides, if the Reds were drawing 40,000 every night at Great American Ballpark, I’m sure they would have their share of obnoxious fans too, if they don’t already.

They like...

empty confines of “Great” American Corporate Park in Cincy…..if they ever fielded a team that won (yes…I know…Cubs NEVER win….BUT…3 more “post seasons” than the Reds since their last time).......they just have too much time on their hands…..and yes that broadcast INFURIATED me…

I was going to post this...

But I forgot how to post links and couldn’t find the tutorial from the old BCB site (ver. 1.0). This rant was completely ridiculous. I agree with Al and other posters that things got went a little overboard with the 15 balls on the field, but to call Cubs fans the worst in baseball was a complete over-reaction. This puts him into Joe Buck territory—it’s like he wants to BE the story instead of just announcing. So much for being a well-respected braodcaster…not anymore, at least in my eyes.

by Jay Johnstone on Apr 18, 2008 12:52 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

sports central (the radio program from 7-9pm on wgn ?) played that rant a few times. When his buddy chirped in with his two cents worth… it went from bad to worse. wanting them to lose, never winning, worst fans, and then to bring up goats. That takes effort to fit that much bitterness in to that period of time.

by Madison Cub Fan on Apr 18, 2008 1:14 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The thing that really bothered me...

was the goat remark. Last time I checked, it’s the media (read: Brennaman) that brings up the goat crap every time. I don’t know any Cub fans that mention it. Not to mention the blatant generalizations he makes (14 people threw balls on the field one time that weren’t supposed to, therefore Cub fans are horrible?) I’ll gladly make sure to avoid any game he’s calling in the future.

And am I the only one still watching this Rockies/Padres game? The third 7th inning stretch is coming up. This is honestly ridiculous. And there’s pitch #600 on the evening…

It's gotta be the shoes, folks, it's gotta be the shoes...

Maybe I'm an optimist......

but I viewed the throwing back of 15 balls as being sort of a tribute to Dunn’s monster HR.

That his one ball was equal to 15.
As Lou pointed out, people scramble like crazy to get those ball in the first place, so the HR must of meant something for people to throw theirs so easily.

Wow...

This guy is a first class SOB. There is no defending that attack on our Cubs and US in general. It was way past the ball incident, he basically said he hopes we never win and that we are the most obnoxious fans in baseball.

I can understand detesting the ball throwing and some fans, but he starts ranting on the Cubs and how they’ll find “some way to screw this up”.

What's everyone getting upset about?

Everything he said was true.

Granted, He’s talking about a small section of “Cub Fans” but these Jackasses are still classified as Cub fans. People do root against the Cubs and many do consider Cub fans to be the most obnoxious in sports. ( Although I’d throw Philly in there….).

Personally, I find the whole “Throwing the ball back.” retarded. And throwing 50 baseballs onto the field because your team is losing and you’re a bunch of drunk horses’ asses is just downright sad. I’d ask why Pat Hughes and Ron Santo weren’t as equally upset. These were supposed Cub fans acting like bleeping 12 year olds.

He wasn't talking about a small section of Cubs fans

From the yahoo article here is a quote-

See, this is the kind of thing, quite honestly right now, that makes you want to see this Chicago Cubs team lose. .. [F]ar and away, the most obnoxious fans in baseball, in this league, are those who follow this team right here. ... You simply root against them. I’ve said all winter — they talk about this team winning the division — and my comment is, they won’t win it because, at the end of the day, they still are the Chicago Cubs, and they will figure out a way to screw this whole thing up.”

He stereotyped ALL Cubs fans, he degraded our team and went off on a tangent/rant that was not only ignorant but insulting.

huh? by your logic,

Brennaman stereotyped fans into one large group, disregarding that everyone is different and every team has bad fans. Unacceptable, especially when its implied that you hold yourself to a even-tempered, respectable manner in your job.

by ecbc on Apr 18, 2008 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right.

It’s NOT typical of Cubs fans—it’s typical of a handful of idiots who got too drunk and did something stupid.

Brennaman ought to retire. And don’t even get me started about his son, who he got several jobs—probably the worst example of nepotism in baseball broadcasting history. Did you know that the Cubs offered Marty Brennaman their radio job in 1990 and he turned it down? He wanted to stay in Cincinnati, but “recommended” Thom, who had done ZERO play by play at the time (he was doing weekend TV sports in Cincinnati).

Ugh.

Yes, worst case.

Read what I wrote. Thom Brennaman got a major league PBP job with NO experience AT ALL doing that sort of work, when he was 25 years old.

Even Jack Buck didn’t stoop to that for his son.

Thom left the Cubs

because they wouldnt let him do FOX games and is bitter that the Cubs let Chip do FOX.

Someone refresh my memory but wasnt the older Brennaman brought in and yelled at by the commish about 20 years ago for just about starting a riot with his comments about an umpires call? I beleive everything you could imagine was being thrown on the field and the umpire had to leave the game and Brennaman was severly reprimaned for it by the commish. If you are gonna rants to thousands of people dont be a hippocrat….....to qoute Kenny Williams “He better stay out of our business, he better stay out of Cubs business”

Yes, you are correct

From the same yahoo story I referenced above -

Back when Pete Rose still was kosher and managing the Reds, baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti suspended Charlie Hustle 30 days for a volatile argument with umpire Dave Pallone. The ugly incident was worsened by Brennaman and then-partner Joe Nuxhall, who both — in Giamatti’s view — incited the crowd, which trashed the field and forced Pallone to leave the game

Maybe not every fan...

...but from a distance, I have noticed over the past 5-7 years that there is a group of complete jerks that find their way to Wrigley for assorted night games during the year. These people throw loads of trash onto the field after questionable calls, steal caps off of the heads of pitchers in the bullpen, etc. While they do not act like a typical fan, outsiders to our fandom group are more likely to remember those moments than the positive ones that us normal fans have created over the past 132 seasons. The ball gag on Wednesday was more done in a sense of fun, but I can understand how it can be perceived otherwise because of previous stunts from a few bad eggs.

Still, Marty and Brantley have been very bitter on the air so far this year, so something else may be going on with them personally to spark these mean comments. The most famous incident so far was during the opening week where Brantley just could not stop ripping Edwin Encarnacion. Edwin got his revenge.

Brennaman's had it in for the Cubs

ever since they let his son go years ago. In the time that’s passed he’s obviously become a bitter, cranky old man.
it’s one thing to criticize fan’s actions, etc. but to turn it into such an angry rant-and to lump all Cubs fans, the team, the organization (I’m surprised he left the city out) goes way over the line and really just makes him look like an ass.

Brennaman is an ididot.

This guy went way over the line this time. This whole rant was just a frustrated clown venting about a incident that needed about a 30 second mention. To suggest that the Cubs would not win the division because of the fans was just plain stupid. I guess the division championship we won last year was a mirage because according to this boob the Cubs will never win anything.

NOT an excuse

but I bet Brennaman still views himself as a one town, team broadcaster. Seems to me some of the older broadcasters can’t remember that the internet has created a national audience, and that their comments can live forever.

Put it this way: if he had made those comments 20 years ago, no one outside of Ohio would have heard it originally. Maybe a local columnist would have picked it up, a few days later, but there would be no way for the columnist to have it heard in Chicago. Not an excuse for him, just an interesting comment on how the world has changed.

...I am curious as to how much national play his comments have gotten. In today’s politically correct world, he was clearly over the top, and I wonder if this will cause him any real grief – especially considering you are talking about a HOF broadcaster who should no better.

See, that's what I'm talking about........

It’s so easy to dismiss a certain few idiots as “not representing real Cub fans…” but the sad truth is is that they do to other people watching. Marty Brenaman, a Hall of fame broadcaster and respected by everyone in the business, is simply commenting on what he sees.

Throwing baseballs on the field is an obnoxious thing to do. Same with stealing a reliever's cap, same with littering the field with garbage. Same with all the pathetic frat boy filled, Beer sloshed activities that go on in what used to be my favorite place to watch a game-the wrigley Field Bleachers. The curse of 84 still lives I see.
You're Mad at Marty because he titled us obnoxious and some of the worst in sports. My question is, why aren't you pissed off at "the select few who don't even really represent Cub fans..." for giving people a reason to call you such things?

Sort of

I agree that individual fan actions can shame an entire fan base. But still, would you ever expect Pat Hughes to go off on another team if he witnessed a similar act in a another ballpark? How many games has Brenneman watched in a visiting ballpark? Surely he has learned that some fans do stupid things that don’t represent the fan base as a whole.

so let me get this straight...

... People here, Al included, are allowed to rail about the totally abhorrent behavior of the fans in the bleachers. We constantly talk about the mass of over served people out there, the unwillingness of security to do a thing, and the often times very uncomfortable atmosphere that is watching a game in the Wrigley bleachers. But then Marty Brennaman takes this behavior to task and we’re up in arms? Did Brennaman overreact by labling all Cub fans, yes. But this isn’t one isolated incident. I do believe he was a little harsh but I also would like to see the Cubs front office react to this and start taking some action. I imagine the infantile Cub fans who do this kind of thing lack the self insight to actually change their behavior, so it is up to the organization to change the culture in the bleachers and end this ridiculous behavior.

Like it or not, it does make us all look like jack asses!

It was clearly done by a handful of idiots. Brennaman tarred EVERY Cubs fan by this brush and called us the worst fans in baseball.

Now, is that fair? No, it’s not.

Does this behavior need to stop and do the Cubs need to get more proactive about it? Yes, they do, and in fact, I have seen security get tougher this season already.

Brennaman wasn’t taking this behavior to task. He was using it to bash all of us, to incite his audience to hate us even more than they already do, and that’s just plain wrong and unprofessional.

Yup

The comments that he made in part angered me. i felt that he was lumping a lot of people in… but the fact remains that when things like this happen, it is the actions of a few that tend to characterize the whole. Whether its 2%, 10% of 50%, the actions of a group of boorish Cub fans show the world something about Cub fans and it has an impact on the rest of us, whether we like it or not.

This was not one isolated incident. The trash throwing, the drunkenness, the fighting, until the organization deals with it, Cub fans will be labeled like this.

I DEMAND AN APOLOGY

I hadn’t heard this before today, and I am pissed. While the ball throwing was over the top, Brennaman and Brantley’s comments are flat out rude and ridiculously unnecessary.

If you would like to register a complaint with the Reds organization, you can email their media relations director, Rob Butcher, at rbutcher@cincinnatireds.com. You can also call (513) 765-7000 and use the directory to get straight to Mr. Butcher’s office.

I don’t think it is over the top to expect Brennaman to apologize for his comments.

I called and spoke to him and he said he would pass the comments on to CEO Phil Castellini.

I am guessing that it means that the CEO’s email is:

Neither has bounced back, unlike the first one (which I pulled off of an online press release.)

I just talked to Jamie in media relations at ext 7800

at this number: (513) 765-7000 . He said they’ve been getting a “few” complaints. Call the number folks—make your opinions known.

Personally, I was very complimentary of GABP and it’s staff. They treated my wife and I with kindness, respect a and professionalism last September under less than ideal circunstances for a Red fan. But then I told them how unprofessional Marty is and how disappointing it is to see a HOF’er be so bitter and so blatantly grind his ax on air…..

Take the high road—but tell ‘em the way you feel. I even admitted that Wrigley has it’s share of drunken frat boy idiots..he laughed…the truth is funny!

Stupid is as Stupid Says

It’s not so much what he said but the bitterness of his tone that really pissed me off. Living in NY I can vouch that Chicago Cubs fans are most definitely not the most obnoxious fans in baseball. And we are not universally despised (see “Yankees, NY, American League”). In fact, we are quite beloved here. I was wearing my Zambrano shirt yesterday for no other reason than I felt Big Z-ish. I got a lot of people giving me a “Go Cubs” “Hey Chicago”, even got a “Holy Cow”. People actually feel for us. So many people tell me that they really want the Cubs to win it, and these are Mets fans.

As posted above ad infinitum, there are jerks EVERYWHERE, in every walk of life, in every sport. Right now as I sit here there is a total jerk who sits in an office five feet away from me and won’t shut up. (interestingly, he too is the only other cub fan in the office.) The guy is a schmuck and a loud obnoxious jerk. But you know what, I’m not. Remember, we can only truly lead by example.

As A Reds Fan, but not to start trouble

I could see why Marty was frustrated. It was 12-3 in the 8th inning and balls came flying all over the field delaying the game more. Had it been a role reversal, I’m sure the Cubs and their announcers would not have appreciated it either. He may have been a bit extreme in calling out all cubs fans, but I think he was generally referring to those in the bleachers.

I know at games in Cincy, they have sometimes had trouble with unruly Cubs fans at games, more so than fans for other teams as well, so that is most likely what gave him his bias. However, he should have been more clear and not characterized the whole fan base.

On top of that...

He said he that’s why he likes to see the Cubs lose. I could see the part about obnoxious fans… but disliking an entire organization and hating them (while you’re supposed to be neutral, in theory) is over the line. It is a lot easier to blame a mob and lump everyone into the same bucket, players included, however it is also easy for us Cubs fans to say that Marty crossed the line and it’s easier for us to pin the tail on him because he was knowingly saying it on the air. That right there is our cause for response.

by bap on Apr 18, 2008 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry, but I think it has to do with petty jealousy

1. Cubs let his son go from the broadcast booth
2. More Cub fans show up to Reds games than Reds fans
3. Cubs clinched the division last year in Cincy.

Overall, I think most Cub fans enjoy a trip to Cincy. I don’t doubt that there are some classless fans and I hate to hear that. But that is no cause for him to talk like he did on the air. In light of the scene he incited with Pete Rose about 20 years ago, he is a hypocrite.

Thanks for the comments.

We appreciate it!

I think when we are classified as ‘unruly Cub fans’ when we attend other stadiums isnt really fair for us. This is just my view, but it seems that we are targetted every where we go, because usually there are alot of us, and we are ‘taking the oppsing teams territory’ by coming to their stadium. Honestly we travel well, we have fans all over the place, it is yes in part to WGN, but we are also a city of 8 million, people are always leaving/moving from the city and the roots grow across the country. But here is the thing, when we attend other games, is it right for the home team fans to throw things at us? No. I personally have been hit by peanuts, beer, and nachos (yea nachos). I dont cause any trouble by screaming loud, or drinking or anything like that. I just go for the game.

Finally, honestly non of our announcers WOULD EVER do anything like this. They just are not like that, they have more respect for the opposition and the game itself.

I could see Santo saying something about a Mets fan. He might even say that he doesn’t like it when they win. But I doubt he would say that he likes to see the team lose. And I doubt he would classify all Mets fans as thugs or some other negative term.

And if he did, I would expect to see him get into trouble for it.

I think DmL was being facetious

Anyone remember Trib blogs talking about how Santo was having a great week last year when the Cubs clinched and the Mets choked?

Quite honestly, I think Santo comes across as incredibly petty and childish when he talks about New York and the Mets—and I like Santo.

It’s been 40 years, Ron. Let it go.

you are joking, right?

Santo hates the Mets, loves to see them lose and has never minced words about that. This even after the fact that the Mets were extremely classy a few years back when Santo missed games due to health problems. Every time the subject of New York, the Mets or Mets fans comes up, Santo makes a comment that would piss off Mets fans the same way this is pissing off Cub fans.

Yes, but...

... I don’t think Santo has ever said anything like “All Mets fans are terrible”. Yes, he hates the team and loves to see them lose. There are well-known reasons for that.

There’s a real difference here.

"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx

by Al on Apr 18, 2008 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see no difference

The vehemence that Santo has towards the Mets is no different than what Brennaman said. The difference i see is that Santo exclaims his hatred towards the Mets whenever he has the opportunity. This is the first I’ve heard out of Marty, outside of the opinions he put out there following the Chip and Steve vs Dusty and the players situation. I don’t believe there is a real difference and even if its because of the ‘69 Mets, well, Ron should be professional enough to not allow that to impact his role as a purveyor of information.

I believe that there is a middle ground between what Marty said and what many here are acknowledging. I’ve said that Marty went a bit too far and painted in an unnecessarily broad brush. His comments frustrated me. But there is a real degree of truth to what he said and I wish that people here would point their frustration towards the Cub fans whose attitude poorly reflects Cub fans as a whole. How about people write letters to the Cubs front office asking them to deal with this behavior instead of focusing on the announcer of another team.

DmL

by dmlichte on Apr 18, 2008 6:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The difference is...

... that Santo has a specific reason for this, and the Mets fans likely dismiss it, because after all, they won the World Series and Santo’s team stayed home.

Brennaman’s hatred for the Cubs is ill-placed, based on what happened between the Cubs and his son, and it appears that he will take any opportunity to diss the Cubs, and he dissed the team and the entire fanbase based on an isolated incident.

Yes, these isolated incidents shouldn’t happen. But they also shouldn’t incite an opposing team’s broadcaster to say that the Cubs ought to “never win” as a result. These things have happened before and I haven’t heard a single thing about an opponent’s broadcaster making this a reason to hate the Cubs—until Wednesday night.

Sorry but there's a big difference here.

Santo doesn’t like the Mets or New York, etc. and, yes, maybe that’s a little bit silly but he’s never gone on an angry rant, ripping into the team, their fans, etc. like Brennaman did.
I don’t have a problem with announcers not liking another team- Harry Caray used to taunt the Cubs during his years with the Cardinals and White Sox-but what gets me is going off on such an angry tirade/attack.

by bluekoolaide on Apr 19, 2008 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you are wrong

Santo has gone on angry rants. Santo bitches about the Mets, their fans, their stadium their city every chance he has.

It amazes me that people are so eager to string up Brennaman and call for him to retire, yet what Ron does is fine. It amazes me that Cubs fans are so self important that they think that Reds radio and the Reds owner gives two craps what Cubs fans thing. And it amazes me that Cubs fans are so arrogant to thing that the Reds, Brennaman and residents of Cincinnati are bitter/jealous of the Cubs and Chicago. I swear, this smacks of Red Sox and Yankees fans who believe that their teams are Gods gift to baseball. Marty may have pained with a broad brush and made generalizations but most people here have done the same thing.

Okay sure us Cubs fans may get unruly at Cincinnati games, and since I live near Dayton I have been to my fair share of Cubs Reds games, but what does it says about Cincinnati fans when they scream and yell profanities at me and my kids when we are wearing our Cubs shirts at the games. Sounds like to me that Reds fans can be just as unruly at the own park as visitors can be.

Should be at least fined....

Man! That guy didn’t jaw just those fans that through the baseballs back, he verbally squatted on ALL Cub fans. Off one listen, (im too disgusted to play it again), It also sounded like he blamed the fans as the reason the Cubs haven’t won in awhile. There was not one ounce of constructive announcing in that segment… and if MLB is seriously trying to “clean” up baseball, it needs to lay down some sort of fine, and public apology, because that announcing was ridiculous. It would be one thing to trash talk those fans who threw the balls back onto the field… but he didn’t do that. He used this as an opportunity to rip all Cub fans in general.

(on a lighter side)
How sad… . Maybe he’s mad that the reds just got stuck with Dusty and Patterson, and his bitter feelings rose from that?

by TheHawkRules on Apr 18, 2008 3:23 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Fined?

Surely you aren’t serious. Remember, none of this would have even happened, had the fans not acted like they had zero common sense and thrown balls on the field. Not only did it delay the game, it could have hurt one of the Cub outfielders.

I know it’s not fair that Marty grouped the good fans with the unruly ones, but sometimes life isn’t fair. We have the information we have, and everyone in baseball knows how some fans at Wrigley (and every MLB stadium) can be. I remember fans at Wrigley being pretty crude to Josh Hamilton last year, saying things much worse about him, than what Marty said about the Cubs.

Bottom line, is I think this story is a bit over blown. What’s said is said, and if you polled a lot of people in baseball, I think you would find a lot of people would not be bothered by the statements. Writing letters to the Reds do no good. They aren’t going to fine, suspend, or fire their Hall Of Fame broadcaster for making an opinion. If Reds fans do something that dumb, I would imagine Marty would be all over them as well (as he should be). Marty is the first to jump all over a player on the Reds team that made a bad play. It is how he is, and how he always will be. He is not any sort of a homer who has nothing bad to say about the team he covers. He is a broadcaster, and last I checked they are entitled to their opinions as well.

I think everyone on this site thinks throwing the balls on the field was dumb. You don’t want people making judgments on you and your team, it’s pretty simple: Don’t do dumb stuff like that.

When he took it to the point of saying everyone hates the Cub’s fans, people want them to lose, and the Cubs will find a way to lose because of it, was entirely over the line.

I think you are missing the point...

I dont think you will find anyone on this board that thinks or thought that the ball throwing thing was a good idea, or cool, or whatever you want to call it. it was dumb, it is dumb, and for years i have wished the organization would arrest idiots like this and give them a life time bad. That is the easiest way to end it. if Marty wanted to direct some anger at someone, it should have been at the organization. Not the 39,985 other fans in the stadium.

And for him to wish us to lose, and tell everyone to cheer for them to lose, and that our stupid fans are the reason we will blow it, is childish. And then to say that the fans blame the losing seasons on a goat? he should get himself informed. The media is the one who uses the goat.

A simple apology would be fine, but if you were to here him on our radio station this morning, i think he officially got every Cub fan to hate him more. He portrayed himself as an arrogant ass on the talk show this morning. No need for that, he made some really bad comments about the City, its fans, the team, indirectly the players, and somewhat of the organization in his brief rant. All because 15 people threw baseballs onto the field. How is this not dumb on his part? A simple what a bunch of idiots in the stands, kick them out, they are ruining the game would have been more suitable, instead of the 10 minute rant that sounded like pure jealousy and arrogance.

I don't know

I don’t think he really enjoys his job very much anymore. Ever since Joe Nuxhall stopped announcing regularly, Marty has let his bitter side consume him. That also happened to coincide with some bad Reds teams, so that didn’t help. We thought bringing Thom into the booth would rejuvenate Marty since he’d be working with his son, but really it just causes him to go off on more tangents and rants.

When he calls the game, he’s still one of the best. The problem is getting him to actually call the game. Most of the time he’s reading emails and ranting about something completely unrelated to the game itself.

WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!

Well, as usual

I sent my comments to the Daily Herald for consideration to print. I’ve been in their “readers have their say” section several times before and hope to do so again. If I’m quoted, I hope what I said would be somewhat representative of what many of us believe. Here it is:

“I am utterly disappointed Marty chose to take this route. I expect more from a HoF broadcaster than to impugn an entire fan base – a fan base larger than he could ever imagine the Reds having – for the actions of only a few people.

But I guess that’s only what he sees. And of course this sort of thing never happens anywhere else, especially Cincinnati.

To top it off, he feels he speaks for the rest of baseball’s fans. Usually arrogance such as that diminishes with age; it’s often called wisdom.

Marty like his son, is envious of a fan base that fills not only the North side shrine but their place as well.

Of course we won’t talk about how Cincinnati fans littered Riverfront Stadium with transistor radios and cigarette lighters after an episode Pete Rose was involved in years ago. The game was delayed 15 minutes by the Reds fans’ actions and Brennaman called out an umpire during his telecast. I guess Marty is above those petty things now; right Marty? Boy if that isn’t the pot calling the kettle black.”
