Help a fellow BCB'er enjoy the game
Okay everyone, here is my problem. I work in an office building downtown, and my company just recently started blocking streaming audio, video, and flash-based apps. Basically, no Gameday audio or video for me. I've tried a few portable radios in the office and NONE of them pick up AM reception so no Pat & Ron : ( .
Anyone in a similar situation? Any advice? I'll be pretty disappointed if I have to go the whole season like this.

Would satellite radio work?
I don't own one myself, but it's my only suggestion outside of morse code.
Also, you said they're blocking apps... does that include sling box as well?

Slingbox...
I had it hooked up to my Windows Mobile phone a while back; I switched to an iPhone now so that wouldn't work. I couldn't use Slingbox on my computer because I wouldn't be able to download the player.

You might not have to.
With a thumb drive, can't you run the program right from the drive?

Satellite radio doesn't work inside
At least sirius doesnt. And they do have internet radio with XM and Sirius, but you can't stream, and they don't put sports on the stream anyways.
by GoCubbies34 on Apr 2, 2008 9:03 AM CDT 0 recs
It doesn't?
I don't have XM, but aren't they always running commercials about how you can take your XM radio into your office?

I have XM
and listen to it in my office all day and at home - both of which are "inside". My office is an old brick factory converted to office space and there are some rception issues when it rains but it does work inside.

I work in an office building downtown, too...
...and, though I don't subscribe to sattelite radio, one of my co-workers does. He listens to Howard Stern all day and, judging by his constant laughter, does not have a problem with reception.
I definitely feel for your situation. I'm fortunate to work for a relatively small company with a very laid-back IT guy who doesn't hassle us too much about streaming, downloads, etc.

They do have portable radios
But they connect to the Wi-Fi

That's not true
The portable radios do not connect to wifi. Both XM and Sirius have terrestrial repeaters downtown so you should be able to get reception almost anywhere downtown.

Can you
pick up a wireless internet signal at all? You could use a laptop to keep an eye on gameday or listen to the audio that way.
by gwood on Apr 2, 2008 9:05 AM CDT 0 recs
Nope...
The closest Wi-Fi is probably Starbucks down the street or Daley Plaza. I wish I could use the internet on my iPhone some how, but it doesn't support Flash.... yet!

BCB
usually provides good play by play (or every other play) but it goes along well with MLB gameday. Better than nothing!!!

Phone
Call 312-923-1938 to get WGN over the phone. I have used it to check the score. I am sure your company won't mind tying up a line for 3 hours or so.

I heard a voice...
I just put the radio on top of my file cabinet and I think I heard Mike North's voice. There is hope! I'm going to run down to Radio Shack and buy a better radio and see if that helps. Haha... these people at work think I'm nuts.

I have a radio made by a company called Grundig
it gets better reception than a normal radio; they include a little antenna that can be strung out to a window or up higher if you need to.
I would imagine a quick google search would turn up some sort of list that ranks radios by their AM receptivity (if that's a word).

It won't help today...but...
I have a radio that picks up tv signals (yes, I know it will only work for another year before everything goes digital) and for games broadcast on WGN, I use that since the AM reception at work is real crappy.

Interesting note.
For a team that supposedly plays "too many day games", in 2008 the Cubs will play only 32 games during "working hours" -- i.e. during the afternoon Monday through Friday (this doesn't include the two holiday games, when most people are off work).

Here's what I do...
Sounds like you're running to radio shack right now, so you may be in the process of doing this, but I'm in almost the same situation. I have one of those small sports walkman radios that only gets AM/FM. I bought the longest cord I could find from radio shack ($8?). I sit the radio on the window ledge at work & run the cord up & around, etc...until it gets to me. I can only get AM if the radio is right next to the window. Lucky for me, I now sit close to a window. It was a little messy before, but worth it.

Try this
Go to the website below, and depending on what kind of firewall your company is running you may be able to access what you are looking for. Scroll to the bottom of the page and input a webpage that you know is blocked through your company as a "test" and if you are able to access, you shouldn't have a problem getting your audio to work. Worth a shot

Success... almost
I bought a $30 desktop radio from Radio Shack. 720 worked in the store; I get back to the office, and 670 comes in crystal clear, but 720 is a just a buzz.

Try short wave radios?
I had one I used to listen to when I was living in Spain. I would think that would get okay reception. I'm sure radio shack will have those too...or at least be able to direct you to the right people. Ask them about it too, they tend to be tech geeks and may have an answer.
Calm down.

SSH
If you're a little technically inclined, SSH tunneling is the way to go. You can google it. You do have to have access to your home PC and be able to get out on port 22 (ssh). It's the only way to fly.

BCB
I usually "watch" the game by the PBP here on BCB. In a pinch, there is also the "Cubicle" on chicagosports.com where a guy writes out what is happening and there is an auto-refresh option. There's about a minute lag with this option. The BCBers usually are ahead of this and my thanks to everyone who gives PBP on the game thread.

easy as pie...
if you have a laptop, get you an AT&T wireless card. Bring that to your office. if you cant have it sitting on your desk, just get the gameday audio and put it under your desk

Well..........
You could try to find a proxy online. When at work, google proxy, and open one of them up. If u dont know what it is, it is basically a website that gives you a address bar, so you can go to a website through that website. lol. When you go in there, test one of the blocked websitesand see if it works... Do it at school all the time, until the tech person blocked like almost EVERYTHING... If i want to use a proxy, i need to go to about page 80 on google to find one that isnt blocked. lol.

Problem solved....
I stacked some books on the top of my cube shelf and put the radio up pretty high. Then taped the AM antenna wire to one of the support beams next to my cube... a few minutes of fiddling around... and I heard Ron's voice loud and clear! (There is bad static from time to time, but it gets the job done)

I just bought a $12
radio that also picks up TV sound. It has AM and FM but also gets WGN tv sound. Works pretty well. It was an elcheapo Emerson from Wal-Mart.
