I have faith that the Cubs will come back.
My Mom told me that being a Cubs fan was a great test of faith.

What I don't get is how we go through
an entire spring training without realizing that 1)theriot's not a lead-off man 2)Soriano isn't a #2 hitter (brutal) and 3)Pie is basically an autmatic out

Yes I know that doesn't make sense, but neither does Lou as our manager. BB and Trammell would be much better options in my opinion. I disagree with the Pie naysayers
Pie IS a good hitter. But he has to grow up and get over the crowd, his nervousness, and ignore the pressure.
He's played in what...80-something games in the Majors
And in most of his other stops he's completely cremated the ball offensively

Same old team. 5 runs this year ALL off HR's. How a team with this many .290+ hitters can never seem to score any other way amazes me. Maybe the problem with this offense is Lee and Ramirez. I have no clue why we can't score runs.

You lose 60, you win 60 and the other 42 are tossups. We've seen one of each. The Cubs are due for the third.

Actually I guess that's about all...
In Bo I trust.
No.
Really, you can talk about Lee and Soto's HR you're not going to win many games having two positives. Look at the cons, Soriano and Ramirez did squat again today, Lilly was awful, Howry got ripped, Hart might as well have watched people steal bases, Pie can't hit a cut off man to save his life. This is unacceptable. I don't want to hear any crap about it being "being game number 2", mental mistakes like not hodling someone on and giving to much of a secondary lead, and not hitting cut off men is not acceptable in game 2 or 152. Why on Earth would would you send Ramirez with Fukudome up. I dont' care what the situaton was, he's not fast enough, and doesn't run enough to get a good jump. This team plays like a bunch of old men. Why in the world is it that every team seems to hit the ball. Why is it that terrible teams can score, but the Cubs can't. We couldn't advance runners if the Brewer's were wearing blindfolds high on meth. I know its early, but how can it not be concerning when you look like absolute rubbish against a team you should be jumping out of your pants to play. Give me a break.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.

if I have to read all this whinging every time the Cubs lose.

Pie strikes out swinging (2 out)
If the Cubs were an international soccer team they'd be called Scotland.
theriot and fontenot were kinda cute when they played well last year
but they are not major league players by any mean, get people on this team that know what the hell they are doing, we need wins.
Not fair weather...
just worried about "here we go again".

Seriously....
Its only the first two games. This team will play well.
Lou will get this team winning.

Fonty pops out!
Bad bad game... ....ah well let's get em tomorrow.
If the Cubs were an international soccer team they'd be called Scotland.
dont worry it could be worse
dusty could still be the manager
I'd say ah well too
But Dumpster's pitching tomorrow. Not good chances. I think the winning streak will have to start with Houston

I agree, it will just be interesting to see how long lou will leave him in the rotation and finally realizes
what the hell was I thinking in starting this guy

Great school...
I'm an avid Cats football fan, which is probably no surprise... I've enjoyed your posts today... i think we have the same sense of humor.

Haha, thanks. And as for LTP: Yes, every day! I have the RSS feed in Safari. I've also called quite a few NU football games for WNUR.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Right again, you're on a roll. I'm on my way to TV anchoring auditions, as a matter of fact, in a few minutes.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Very nice.
I went to your Broadcasting rival Syracuse (Newhouse School of Communications grad). I'm actually friends with a bunch of broadcasters and producers from there... we are officially networking.

Sorry it's taking so long to respond.
And I don't know if you're even still here. Just got back from the studio. Nicely done, there, Syracuse. Did your dean allegedly falsify quotes in an alumni letter too? : )
I graduate in June. Do you know anyone in California? Looking for a job there....and I have some leads in Santa Barbara...

What was that? I have trouble hearing things SO LOW TO THE GROUND!
haha, kidding kidding. : ) I LOVE Paterno on Big Ten Media Day. Really, there is no one better. Of course, I don't need to tell you that....
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Fundamentally yucky
Seems like I am watching a bit of a replay of last year's start...an offense that can't score because they lack a true leadoff hitter....boneheaded mistakes on the basepaths and in the field....bullpen questionable....guess we wait for Lou to blow up again...wish we had a leadoff guy.....and wish we didn't spend so much on Swinging Soriano....
did the money come out of your wallet?
who cares how much he gets paid... i'd rather have him in there over other alternatives... is his contract preventing the cubs from signing marquee players?
by bap on Apr 2, 2008 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions
No you are right....they could go out and splurge on a leadoff guy.....
Soriano is just frustrating to watch at times.....
Most def...
but when he's hot.... he's magma lava hot babbby!

FYI on Kendall
Kendall got Lasik surgery over the winter. Perhaps he can see again. Doesn't help his arm, but perhaps the guy's lack of production -- declining over the past few years could be chalked up to.....bad vision.

Pathetic
Allow me to propose the radical....put our two most fundamentally strong hitters #1 and #2 in the lineup and see what happens....
1. Kosuke
2. DeRosa
3. Lee
4. Ramirez
5. Soriano (piece of ^%*@)
6. Soto
7. Theriot
8. Pie
That...
is an actual good idea...prepare to never see it happen.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

I'd flip Riot and Pie
but I'd much rather have that than the current version.

It has only been two games. This season is going to come down to the wire. Have more faith in your cubs and maybe put a little less faith in Fukudome. Great opening day, but a fundamentally strong hitter does not strike out and then spin in a circle because his balance is so off.
Oh well....
at least DLee got the bat going..... and Fuku's game yesterday....and Z looks like he is focused this year...Marmol is still looking good....too early to freak out....I always like to watch a good three or four weeks of baseball before I start to get a feel for a team....let the BrewSlobs enjoy these early victories...we will count on their pitching choking it up later in the season....but would love a leadoff hitter...
heh, I'm going out on a limb and calling you a big, dirty, liar,
but more on that subject. Soriano had a pretty lousy April last year as well, which can be correlated to the weather(avg temp in DR: 66 to 84 F). Give the man some time
"We are going to light up the SB Nation server farm like a Christmas tree." - cwyers
Time?
Oh, do you mean like during the playoffs versus Arizona where he vaporized??? Soriano is a $136 franchise player. A franchise player DELIVERS, rather than hit home runs when the score is 9-2. A franchise player doesn't swing from his bloody heels on every pitch when the imperative during his at bat is to move the runner along.
Sweet Mary
I was brain-storming what you'd say, and I'd be damned if you didn't come up with the hypothesized results. How many times are you going to bring up 136, Arizona, and playoffs in one posting? Ramirez was putrid in the playoffs as well, why don't you say anything about that?
And Soriano has delivered, you just never bring it up and/or never even bothered to research it(or don't know how). Look at his "clutch" stats, specifically when it's Late and Close:
.318 BA, .356 OBP, .518 SLG, .873 OPS
or how about when it's tied?
.291 BA, .332 OBP, .588 SLG, .920 OPS
Your conclusion that he doesn't "deliver" is invalid, kind sir. Don't defame Soriano because of things that he actually does well at. Jeeze, this bashing gets really old really quickly

Put this one behind you,
and go out and get 'em tomorrow!
2 games don't make a season. A lot of guys still getting their feet under them. This team will be more than ok.

Soriano back to leadoff spot...Theriot in the 2 hole...
Lou just seemed to just decide that at the press conference.....
and another step is taken

Some reporter's cell phone
went off in the presser. Lou interrupted his answer to say "Hey, there we go!" And kinda gave a bemused smile at the whoever's phone it was. Then gave up on the answer.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Lou totally seemed to make up the Soriano
back to the leadoff spot on the spot during the press conference....hilarious....you could see the wheels spinning and then he just came out with it......on the fly managing.....
We will win tomorrow....
and crush Dave Bush's very nice 5.12 ERA in 2007.
We'll see how Dempster pitches tomorrow. He had some fairly good stuff in ST.
1) Theriot
2) Fukudome
3) Lee
4) Ramirez
5) Soriano
6) Soto
7) DeRosa
8) Pie
9) Dempster
The good thing is you can wake up tomorrow and it's a new day. The Cubs aren't the type of team that is only going to score 1-2 runs in a game.
The NL Central has another thing coming if they underestimate the Cubs.
LET'S GET 'EM TOMORROW GENTLEMAN!
The Time Is Now. [Chicago Cubs, '08]
If Soriano is better leading off
That's fine.
He isn't your standard leadoff hitter. But the Cubs seemed to do pretty darned well when he led off.

Astros are horrible
and will be in town after (probably) dropping 3 out of 4 to the Pads....they really look bad, and I can't chalk it up all to the Padres pitching.

Whoa, I think I can
If a team has Peavy and Young pitch at Petco Park, you're more likely going to win than lose.

Good Grief
I dont know what to say about these 1st two games. I hear some people saying "Don't worry, the Brewers are a good team." True, but the Cubs are better. The Cubs hitting is better than the Brewers pitching. 2 runs is no good. I dont expect Lou is going to let the team get off to any slower of a start. He needs to get on them and get on them early. If the Cubs are going to go deep in the playoffs they need to get mad about losing 2 at home.
Poor Matty Murton....
If Young can put together
another good season, maybe I can agree. His '07 was not as good as '06. I think the jury is still out on him.

Well
I was pissed after todays game, but u gotta let it roll off.
I know i got front row tickets on the first base line to see dempster pitch tommorow, and you all will still be watching the game. 2 games down 160 more to go till the cubs make the playoffs at least.
I hope they can
get it together and soon but, just the same, based on what I've seen, I think it's time to scale down the expectations.
