Sears Tower, or John Hancock? I'm About to Jump!
Boy, that's way up there. (via www.chicagoarchitecture.info)
Yes, the Sears Tower is taller. But what about the roads around Hancock? More busy, right? Pretty dangerous? Eh?? A person could really get hurt, falling on the street and then getting run over! Which is most dangerous?
Or do you want to change things up a little bit? Like say, running head-on toward an el train near Addison? I could head to I-94 and try to jump in front of Lance Briggs' Lamborghini. Maybe we'll get some more storms and I can head to U.S. Cellular and stand in the middle (no one shows up anyway) and hold up an aluminum bat and wait to get electrocuted? Which would you choose?
Looks a lot more inviting than Wrigley right now. via www.oharenoise.org
Oooh, wait, I got it. Oooh. This is good. One word: O'HARE. More words: SNEAK ONTO A RUNWAY AND DIVE INTO A JET ENGINE! Preferably the Brewers' charter when they leave.
Why? Because the SEASON IS OVER!!! We can't manufacture runs. The top of our order can't hit. We strand too many runners. Soriano sucks. Pie sucks. Lou sucks. Lou must go. Fire him! Ramirez never hustles. DeRosa should be hitting leadoff. Or maybe Kosuke. Whatever Lou is doing is wrong. He needs to change it up. Why isn't anyone stealing?! We need Roberts! We don't need Roberts! We need Murton! We need Patterson! Shoot, why did Fred McGriff have to decline that trade the first time?!?
Oh and pitching? Don't even get me started on pitching. Zambrano isn't healthy. He'll be on the DL by May. Ted Lilly can't repeat last season. He's gonna be terrible. Dumpster sucks. (Ha, Dumpster, see what I did there?) Bob Howry is TERRIBLE. Kerry Wood will NEVER be a closer. Lou's an idiot for thinking so. Oh my GOSH Jason Marquis! Ohhhhh Jason Marquis. (Hey I just thought of something - Soriano is OVERPAID!)
I'd be shocked if we finished 5th in this division this year. No pitching. No hitting. A zero for a manager. We're screwed. I'm headed for O'Hare to take a ride in a turbine love tunnel.
Or.....I can just wait and see. Because there are 160 games left to play.

Just to clarify
I really don't mean to dump on people who are worried. But honestly folks, give 'em a chance! If they still can't execute fundamentals in a month, let's talk.

The only solution...
We gotta trade for Roberts and immediately make him manager. Player managers always work. The fact he can play second base is just a bonus!

All of the
"The Sky Is Falling" bunch today was really depressing. I've read a couple of newbies on here state today that they won't come back to this site because of all the Debbie Downers. That's a shame because Al does a terrific job on here.
The two losses don't have me down but the negativity posted today does.

I think what Sue means is...
that new users were following on the game thread (which I'm assuming that you want to grow the readership here) and were getting depressed by the negative neds constantly bashing the Cubs and/or piniella.
I am a newer reader here and I love everything you do, but Sue is pointing out that this negatively is not so inviting especially for newbies. Obviously you can't control what people post... but it's interesting to see that during all of spring training a lot of people say the sky is falling (DLee example) and now we lose two games and we're never going to win one...
As a new user, I may have to give up the game threads because its simply not as insightful and constructive as I thought it would be. Today's game thread was a few of us arguing that this isn't the end of the world vs. those who wanted changes now/piniella fired etc etc. Again you can't do anything to control this and I don't think we're asking you to, but I think Sue is alerting you to the fact that new people like me, might get turned off by the negativity on these boards, that's all. What are your thoughts?

You are correct.
I don't want to see newcomers run off because of the negativity. If it happens today I will start another game thread.

Echo that, Sue.
The negativity in just 2 games is way out of line. Since it's the start of the season, everything is magnified out of proportion. If this diary/fan post is for real, to go ballistic out of the gate isn't reasonable.
But, I guess higher expectations will bring more of this.

all we have to do is pray...
haha, but really - this team is OBVIOUSLY talented enough to win whatever they are hungry enough to win this year, as long as they dont go berserk like some fans on here. I feel GREAT about this season,
I FEEL AWESOME!!
so what if i have some managerial ideas that differ from lou's? any interested fan does - but that doesn't mean I am going to sway my support for LP or for the team.
these guys love us - SHOW THEM SOME LOVE - this season is going to be
SOOO FREAKING WONDERFUL!!!!
(note - i promise none of this is sarcasm - its all how i feel and i hope there are plenty of other hopeful, positively-passionate cubbie fans who join me!)

I was going to jump into a bear den, since they're just starting to awake up here. But I didn't want you Chicago guys thinking I was joining Da Bears.

WE NEED ROBERTS!!!
I DONT KNOW HOW MANY GAMES WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO LOSE FOR "THE MAN" SEES THAT WE NEED ROBERTS! OUR LINE UP IS PATHETIC SORIANO SHOULD BE ON THE BENCH(UNTIL HE WANTS TO ACTUALLY HIT THE BALL) AND PUT MURTON IN...sorry guys...but honestly we do need roberts..bad. life would just be so much easier.
THIS IS THE YEAR!!
by BadBillyGoat on Apr 2, 2008 10:11 PM CDT 0 recs
Haven't you read the
other messages? We're not supposed to be critical of anything the Cubs have done so far for fear of discouraging the newbies. So okay, everything's great. Soriano's going to go on an MVP-type tear-Soto and Fukodome are going to fight it out for ROY-and Pie is going to become a superstar. Gee, i feel better already.
by bluekoolaide on Apr 2, 2008 11:01 PM CDT 0 recs
That's is fine if that is your attitude...
but I propose to you a thoughtful discussion so far... rather than... "when are we going to see change?"
Believe me, I'm as upset as the next guy at how poor we look as a whole team... but it's not uncommon for guys like Soriano to start 0 for 10. In fact, he's a streaky player, which I don't like at all. But when he's hot, he's hot and you gotta know that it's coming. Now if you make a case for where he should hit in the order based on his career and last year... I'll listen. But people who think major changes are due after 2 games in a cold/damp climate have to be insane. These guys are professionals, let's relax with the doom and gloom.
Al's writeup is an outstanding snapshot of the game. He's obviously not happy with Lilly's effort today and a host of other things... that's what we all think. But he offers some insight and solid commentary worth reading. I will keep coming back to this site but my comment to Sue was... "I may just have to come back in 2 weeks and say, 'I told you so.'"

If I had to pick my poison
for ending it all, I'd probably listen to "Cheap Seats" by Alabama on repeat until my music snob head explodes. Or, rewatch Larry The Cable Guy's 7th inning stretch and booth interview until my comedy snob head explodes.
I may have gone skydiving, but I'm still afraid of heights so no jumping for me.

I used to be in a Facebook group
called "People Who Say Git-R-Dun Should Be Set On Fire."
Unfortunately, that would kill a good chunk of this country's population and thus not be considered so PC.
Crying shame, that is.

I don't mind the negativity
if its supported by a logical thought process. I was ready to jump on this diary author (asking him to tell me when he'd do it so I can tape it and put it on You Tube) until I got to the last line.
The un-supported negativity is almost as bad as the Cubbie koolaid / Brady Bunch / Let's-all-say-nice-things-only-game-thread. Ripping on a player for a fundamentally bad play is not wrong as long as the ripper can substantiate their position.
by blackhawk24 on Apr 3, 2008 7:34 AM CDT 0 recs
absolutely...
I think half of the reason we are all here is to voice some frustration... but I think what we're talking about people flooding the boards with "here we go again, it's the same as last year, Pie is not a major leaguer, Theriot is the worst shortstop of all time..." That's not adding insight or entertainment to the game for me.
If you want to say, "man, I'm frustrated at Lou for not sending Fukudome in the 2nd inning, we need to start making things happen on the basepaths (case in point, DeRo grounds into double play)." That's the kind of statement I'm looking for. Instead we get, "DeRosa shouldn't even be our starting 2B right now! We need TPTSNBN or we'll never win." Let's just logical people, that's all.

by Keystone80435 on Apr 3, 2008 11:52 PM CDT 0 recs
First, it doesn't matter which bldg in theory...
you'll hit terminal velocity before you hit the ground. And don't worry about being run over, it won't matter.
Second, from the Hancock, you gotta jump out pretty far so you have straight shot to the ground because of the sidewall angles. OK, rhetorical comments grounded (no pun) now.
Third, anyone ever been on either roof? Pretty cool. I've had the chance to help service equipment on the top floors and got to go out on the roof once in awhile. Can't stay out long since the [antenna] radiation would fry me from the inside out. The TV stations transmit at 5 Mega-Watts.
Now for the negativity. It's peoples RIGHT to speak negative. Last time I looked the first amendment was still in affect. That doesn't mean you have to agree or even acknowledge it though. It may seem irrational, it may even sound stupid but that's their choice. No need to run off, no need to never return and no need for separate discussions or game threads. Hey it was only 0-2 at that time, now they're 6-4 and could even have been 7-3. But I'll take a .600 winning percentage for the complete season; how's 97 wins sound?
