Santana was looking to be with Cubs

From this article:

''I was open to anything,'' said Santana, whose trade to the Mets in a 4-for-1 deal in February boosted them past the Cubs as the popular favorite to win the NL pennant. ''My mind-set was if they're going to trade me, that they trade me to a team willing to do whatever it takes to win it all. It looks like they're trying to win here (in Chicago). That's what I was looking for.''

Now excuse me while I go give Jim Hendry a swift kick to the throat.

Really though, even if it is upsetting to hear this now, it still probably wouldn't have happened. I don't think the Cubs have that much of quality minor leaguers to trade for Santana (which is what the Mets did); regardless, it would have been pretty cool to see him donning the blue pinstripes.

Which leads me to another question: should the Cubs get another starting pitcher? There have been rumblings about the Rays and the Cubs talking about Murton for a potential trade, in which I say: "Awesome." Lets say that they would potentially trade for Kazmir, what would be needed to get someone like him? Murton, Marshall with a sprinkle of Patterson? I'd do that. But then again, I have no idea how highly the Rays value Kazmir(which I'm guessing is a good amount).

... Santana, really? (sigh)

I would like to have him, but the price would be too great for my liking, me thinks!

Can't wait for the Cubs in '08!!!

kazmir

probably unrealistic, and james shields may also be, but he’d be a good one to target.

Aramis 5 BB - 3 K, he's come close before, I'd love to see a season from a Cubs player with more walks than strikeouts.

the amatuer oppinion of a Cubs fan in the Tampa Area, if anyone cares

as far as the cubs getting Kazmir, I would say that yes, it’s doable. as talented as Kazmir is, he’s made it quite clear he is NOT taking a ‘hometown discount’ when his arbitration years are up. he’s never said he wanted out of Tampa, just that he expects the Rays to pony up market value for him. that leads up to an interesting situation within the Rays organization.

We all know that the Rays don’t have a whole lot of spending money, but i think those of us familiar with baseball would say they are spending what money they do have wisely. they’re signing up key players to long term deals before they hit star status, and being very careful about offering big contracts to free agents.

this works a bit in the Cubs favor IF they wanna go after Kazmir because Tampa, at the moment, has a surplus of starting pitching talent in the majors and minors. what they haven’t been able to produce, outside of the much heralded Longoria (who looks really, really good so far) is infielders. so this might be one of the times when Gallagher wouldn’t be a centerpiece in any trades. not saying the Rays wouldn’t want him, but starters aren’t they’re biggest concern. the list of players they’d want that come into my head for a Kazmir are names like Cedeno, Patterson, Murton, Colvin… and relivers such as Kevin Hart and Jose Ceda. the Rays would want young talent with big upside, and as many years of team control as they can get

i also don’t think we could pry Shields away them because he has intimated that he’s open to a long-term deal with a discount… which is too bad, ‘cuz i think he’s probably the better of the two…

anyways, that’s my two cents.

Well

It would have been nice if he said this back in November instead of whining about wanting to play in New York,

It would have made the Twins able to bargain better too.

We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

I think Santana's

doing a bit of revisionist history here, now that he sees the Cubs paddling everyone’s behind. The reports during ST were that he A.) wished to go to an east coast team, ruling out the Cubs, B.) that he wished to go to a team that had ST in Florida, further ruling out the Cubs. Besides the price probably would’ve been higher than Hendry wants to pay. It’s sort of disingenuous for Santana to say this stuff now.

Hindsight is indeed 20/20, eh, Johan?

Agreed.

Just because he said he was “open to anything” didn’t mean his first choice was the Cubs.

And also, gary varsho is right. The Cubs probably didn’t have what the Twins would have asked for.

Let this go. The Cubs are winning.

What Al said

I don’t read that blurb at all as saying “I wanted to go to the Cubs.” It says “I wanted to go somewhere where they want to win. Well, the Cubs are winning now so that would have made me happy.”

by Arbusto on Apr 22, 2008 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Sun TImes Story also says...
Cubs officials won’t comment publicly about Santana, but privately they said they called the Twins when general manager Bill Smith put Santana on the block last winter and were told Santana wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause for any team that didn’t train in Florida or play on the East Coast.

So Hendry did try but was told by the Twins that a trade was not possible. As we all know, It takes 2 to Tango. If the Twins would not even ask Santana about the Cubs…what was Hendry to do? He could not go public with his request…He could not go directly to Santana…That would be tampering.

They Tried, they were turned down. ENd of story.

Same story here:

SI’s Fan Nation

Apparently the Twins thought Santana wouldn’t be interested, based on his previously stated conditions to agree to a trade. Hendry wasn’t allowed to go over Twins’ management. That would’ve been tampering. Like you said, end of story. Nice try, Hendry.

Also

Does anyone believe the Twins GM if he had gotten an offer from the Cubs didn’t call Santana and ask if he would consider going there?

I certainly hope if the situation were with the Cubs and someone we were going to trade was pretty insistent on going to a place with some criteria Hendry would at least call and talk to him before turning down a good trade.

Maybe this is just like, my opinion, but...

...when i read the quotes of Santana that are posted it doesn’t tell me anything. I never thought that he went to the Mets because he hated the Cubs, the guy isn’t related to Marty Brenneman as far as I know?

I don’t recall who the mets gave up to get him, so I can’t comment on whether Hendry messed up?

I am puzzled as to why these quotes would upset anyone now?

by DudeVf11 on Apr 22, 2008 8:49 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The Twins received current starting CF Carlos Gomez, 22,

and righthanded pitchers Philip Humber, 25 (0-2, International League AAA Rochester Redwings), Kevin Mulvey, 23 (2-1, AAA Rochester Redwings) and Deolis Guerra, 19 (2-0, FSL A+ Fort Myers Miracle).

So it would have been...

... probably Pie, Gallagher, Marshall and Ceda.

Would you do that? I wouldn’t.

In a heartbeat

I’m a big Pie supporter, but that’d be a no brainer for me. I agree that this was never happening regardless.

You can't have it both ways.

You say:

I don’t think the Cubs have that much of quality minor leaguers to trade for Santana (which is what the Mets did);

Then you say:

regardless, it would have been pretty cool to see him donning the blue pinstripes.

Uh, well, you can’t have one without the other, so pull your penny loafer away from Hendry’s throat, por favor.

I would guess Twins management didn’t leave a post-it note on Johan’s locker telling him that the Cubs called because they knew Hendry couldn’t come close to a reasonable offer for Santana.

I agree it’s a damn shame. I generally don’t like to even think about the postseason this early, but if the Cubs went into ‘08 with Santana and Zambrano at the top of their rotation, I’d be divesting myself of personal assets right now to save up for a World Series ticket. Alas and alack, it was not to be.

What the hell

Do you not know how to understand English grammar? I’m saying that WITHOUT REGARD that the Cubs don’t have quality minor leaguers to have pulled off the trade, I still would have liked to see him playing for the team. I’m sorry, I guess rhetoric beyond the 5th grade level is beyond you. I really can’t believe I had to explain that.

Chill out, my friend.

I understand English grammar real goodly. What I’m mainly taking issue with is your cheap shot at Jim Hendry. When the Santana trade finally happened, nothing annoyed me more than hearing radio callers whine and moan about how Hendry didn’t “make” this trade happen.

Now you purport the trade was never really possible, yet you still want to (figuratively, I assume) kick Hendry in the throat, and you still title your fanpost “Santana was looking to be with the Cubs.” Um, no, he wasn’t—he was just maybe, possibly open to the idea.

Now go back and, very slowly, reread my initial post. If you try really hard, you might figure out that I was agreeing with you.

If you can't find the sarcasm

in the statement I made about Hendry, and the whole 2nd paragraph, then we are at extreme odds.

Why can't he say that?

We say stuff like that all the time. “It’d be nice to get X player, and that it’d be great to see him a Cub, but there’s no way we can get him.”

by Arbusto on Apr 22, 2008 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sigh...

Where did I say he couldn’t say that? My point is, there’s nothing wrong with saying “It’d be nice to get X player, and that it’d be great to see him a Cub, but there’s no way we can get him.” That’s what I said, isn’t it? I just don’t understand how taking a figurative (sarcastic, whatever) swipe at Hendry for a trade that never could have happened makes any sense. But I’m probably reading too much into a simple 15-word sentence.

Kazmir would fetch a huge asking price

I just don’t see a trade for Kazmir happening. People scoffed when I said this before, but Tampa sees themselves as having a shot at contention this year – it’s probably the best team they’ve ever put on the field. I doubt they’ll trade any of their commodity guys for anything that doesn’t help them win now and win in the future.

Besides, any trade for Kazmir would see Murton as little more than a throw-in, let alone a centerpiece. He’s one of the premiere young pitchers in the game.

Rays are sealing low $ guys up

I am not sure if anyone else has noticed, but the Rays are signing their low cost players to extensions for real money. They did it with Longoria last week. Some teams (small market) seem to suck their $450k players for as many years as possible. Is this a step in a different direction? I think it is smart if you have the young talent to justify it (Longoria, Upton, Crawford, Kazmir, Shields). Otherwise, you end up with players like Prince Fielder and R Howard—they have to be bitter about their situation. Will the Phillies handling of Howard make it more difficult when he qualifies for FA?

Why now???

Not you Nittany, but the players, media and agent(s). All I heard leading up to the trade and the days after was he wanted to be on an East coast team that ST’d in Fla. Well, he got what he wished for…

Do the Cubs need another quality starter? To win the division and the NLDS? No…. To win the NLCS and WS? Yes…. I just simply don’t know what names will come out of the woodwork. Good to check back in on this on in 60-90 days.

The Mets

really didn’t give up that much for Santana. Felix Pie, Sean Gallagher, Kevin Hart and Jose Ceda would have been at least equal to what the Mets offered.

But like it was said—it wasn’t like Hendry didn’t try. The Twins told him Santana wasn’t interested in Chicago. And who knows if what Santana is saying now is what he said back in January.

That's a good point.

Remember that Santana had only been at Wrigley ONCE before this year—as a middle reliever for the 2001 Twins. He pitched an inning at Wrigley June 15, 2001.

Maybe he saw the atmosphere and the crowds and the winning and thought, “Damn, that’d be fun!”

A little revisionist history on his part, IMO.
