I'm trying to figure out how much I should blame Lilly
I know Ted Lilly has not been pitching well by any means and even when we think he's off to a good start, he gives up a 5-spot in the bottom of the 4th in Pittsburgh. But to his credit, other than that 12 inning win (no decision for Lilly), Ted has not gotten hardly any run support.
Just some stuff to think about...
Ted Lilly (0-3)
4 Appearances, 18.2 innings
9.16 ERA
7 BB -
14 K's
19 runs allowed (all earned)
Cubs runs scored when Lilly is on the mound (4 games):
12
Cubs runs scored in all 3 of Lilly's decisions:
5
I know Lilly has not been pitching great, but other than the ND in Pitt, he hasn't had much help either.
Also, here are the starting pitchers Lilly has faced and their current records:
Jeff Suppan (1-0)
Tom Gorzelanny (1-2)
Cole Hamels (2-2)
Edinson Volquez (2-0)
Take all of this for what you will.

I hate to be the fanpost police...
...but your comments would probably be better suited to the game thread (on the main page) that Al just posted. You seem new to the site, so it’s no big deal. Just some friendly advice.

anybody else care?
bueller?
If you really need a reason to not care:
This isn’t related to today’s game. It’s related to Ted Lilly.
If you don’t buy that:
Relax. this is a blog.
I would bet a lot of people care.
And how can you say his fanpost isn’t related to today’s game? TED LILLY IS PITCHING TODAY’S GAME. All I’m trying to do is offer some friendly advice to a new poster—advice that, if followed, will benefit everyone here.

haha
I apologize if I seemed like a jerk. It wasn’t my intention. I just tire of people taking what counts as a worthwhile fanpost super seriously.
After reading the site for 2 and a half years (I know people have been here longer, I’m just saying) it gets old listening to people whine about what belongs as a diary/fanpost. If you don’t feel like reading something, just don’t and let people who do want to go ahead and read it. That’s the simplest solution in my opinion.
Just my 2 cents.
I appreciate your apology...
...but I guess I just feel differently. I’ve been here around that same amount of time (first lurking, then contributing), and I’d just like to see this site be as efficient as possible when it comes to initiating and undertaking discussions. I’d also point out that I wasn’t whining—I was simply offering some friendly advice to a new poster. In fact, I explicitly said it’s no big deal.
Granted, your solution is simple. But sometimes what’s simple isn’t what’s best. If this is, in fact, a community, we should all be looking for ways to make the community better and more productive. I happen to think that advising people to refrain from writing fanposts about the weather or giving random thoughts about the starting pitcher of a given game - when there’s already a game thread up - is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.
There’s mine (2 cents, that is).

This one, however...
... did at least explore an issue - run support - which IMO is worth a separate FanPost.

Alright, well...
...I still think the points made would have better served as enrichment for the pregame discussion. But, like I said, no big deal. Just trying to help.

The Sample Size Police are here, too.
Beyond telling us that “Ted is starting slowly this season,” these numbers are almost meaningless at this point.

Heck, we'll bring the real Police here too!

So can they arrest this real fan post for obstruction?

it always devalues the experience.

You can blame Lilly...
He has given up at least 4 runs in each of his starts, and he’s pitched no more than 6 innings. His ERA has been at least 7.5 for each individual start.
It is also true that the Cubs haven’t scored runs in the three losses. But as a starter, if you have an ERA of at least 7.5 in each of your four starts, you should expect to have a record similar to what Lilly has.
Now, if Lilly had an ERA of around 5, you could discuss the run support argument as making him look worse than he’s really been. But with an ERA of 9.16 and consistently poor outings each time out, the run support argument doesn’t hold much water.
He
sure got run support today…
Doesn’t hurt he pitched great too. Don’t worry about Lilly. Whatever funk he’s been in (perhaps still upset about last October’s pitching performance against the DBacks?), he seems to be out of it now.
