Completely Unrelated Photographs

Here are a couple of photos to occupy your morning and afternoon, until tonight's game at Colorado.

Yesterday, I mentioned that the large word ALOU appeared on the outside of the press box underneath the Mets' broadcast booth. Here's photographic proof:

Alou!

They moved the sign inside the booth after the game started. Photo by Damen Jackson

Also in yesterday's recap, I noted that I had heard that there will be concerts held at Wrigley Field this summer (most likely date or dates: the weekend after the All-Star break). This photo shows that the city of Chicago had already factored that in to the neighborhood night game parking restrictions:

Don't even THINK of parking here!

New field and concerts

Do you think that the new turf will handle the concerts without getting torn to pieces like last year’s field?

by Archie on Apr 23, 2008 8:55 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I sure hope so.

I’m a little concerned about that; I thought they might pass on the concerts this year because the field is brand new.

I was hoping the same thing.

I think it would be crazy to put a concert on that field now. I realize that having concerts at Wrigley is a big money maker but sometimes these types of decisions seem to made without any regard to the consequences. Sometimes it seems like the team is the last thing considered in these matter of revenue and the powers that be feel that if something happen to the field it is just the price of doing business.

Alou who?

Has anyone offered any explanation for the “Alou” sign? I don’t quite understand why the Mets broadcasters would display the name of an injured player. Was it to antagonize Cubs fans somehow? An oblique reference to the Bartman incident maybe? I don’t get it.

I just read yesterday's game thread from the Mest SBN blog

http://www.amazinavenue.com/2008/4/22/447316/open-thread-game-19-mets-v#comments

It was hysterical – and I don’t mean that in a mean-spirited way. Obviously the Mets are going through a rough stretch right now, and just got their ass handed to them twice by a team they thought they should be able to handle. So naturally, the true fans are going to bitch and moan and curse and slam and come up with a few really funny comments along the way. I think we can all relate.

Here a few “instant classics”...

- Lineup – Ugh. Get well soon, Moises.
- cassanova… putting years of minor league experience into use
- fukodome is like a good kaz matsui
[when jorge sosa came into the game] – oh christ, here comes the arsonist.
- right now i dont see much room for improvement. no one is producing runs except for the bullpen

But even in the midst of all that doom and gloom, there appears to be at least one Met optimist

- Well, This will make our come from behind victory even more exciting.

Again, I’m not hatin’ on the Mets or their fans. Just wanted to show everyone here that for the most part, baseball fans all over share a common bond of faith, despair, hope and doom.

Yeah. There wasn't a whole

lot for the Mets fans to crow about in those two games. Ass-kickings like that tend to make one a bit grumpy.

by santoswoodenlegs on Apr 23, 2008 10:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Believe me, we owe the mets a lot

of payback. It really felt good to dominate the darlings of the east coast. The big question is “Where does this leave the Mets?”. Many so-called experts felt that the Cubs would win the central but that the Mets would brush us aside since they picked up Santana. I know it’s way to early to make any judgements, but if I were a mte fan I would be asking a few questions about this team.

After last years collapse I wouldn’t think that patience is in great supply there.

Here's a link...

...to the fanpost I just put up over at Amazin’ Avenue. I decided to go with a fanpost, rather than a fanshot, just so I could add a little more verbiage. That site doesn’t appear to have much participation—only 185 comments in the game thread and only 3 comments so far in today’s rather anemic, and understandably melancholy, game wrap. But we’ll see what kind of response I get.

One of these days...

...a bunch of us should volunteer to hang out on an opposing teams’ game thread during a game. I’m not suggesting we be trolls, per se - just do our usual ranting and raving in another “park.” It would be especially funny on a site where they usually don’t have much traffic - like that Nats blog. The owner would wake up the next morning to find four or five hundred comments. Anyway, just a thought.

OBP

Anybody notice that if Cedeno and Johnson are in the line-up, and you could even add in Blanco, that all eight position players have an on-base percentage over .400. This is quite amazing given the Cubs past as free swingers. Dusty, and his base-clogging walks would be pissed. As a comparison, the Diamonbacks, who have the best record in baseball, have only two starters above the .400 mark. This is the type of team chemistry that breeds and makes championships. Well done boys.

On a similar note...

...I notice that they did correct that Square D “gameshow” radio commercial that erringly stated the Cubs hadn’t won a pennant since 1908.

For the record, the incorrect statement was read by the CEO (or president? Not sure) of Square D, and >NOT< Pat Hughes, as originally thought. He apparently re-recorded his bit, and the whole thing sounds fine, if not goofy, now.

Well, we play Pittsburgh twelve more times...

...That should give us the division right there. When Soriano comes back, there will be some serious pressure on him to perform like the others. Maybe that pressure would turn him into more of a real leadoff hitter, although we all know how we feel about that.

Coming into the season I was worried that the schedule was frontloaded with home games when the weather was likely to be inclement and not conducive to the Cubs’ brand of baseball. Fortunately, thus far it’s worked out quite nicely!

Unrelated comment to unrelated pictures

I saw Glendon Rusch pitch last night at the Astros/Padres game. Nothing really to describe, I think he threw about 4 or 5 pitches to get a groundball out. His arm looked live enough from where I was sitting, but then again….Turns out they should’ve left him in. The Astros scored 4 runs off the next guy with the game tied. Anyhow, I am glad to see him back out there. I hope he makes it stick in San Diego.

Johan Santana

I’m not sure if this was posted on a different entry. Please forgive me if it was, it’s about 2AM where I am and I’m too tired to look.

Did anyone see on SI the other day, in the Truth and Rumors section, that Johan Santana was unaware that the Cubs called about him? And that he would have considered playing for them???

The two-time Cy Young Award winner said he would’ve considered waiving his no-trade clause for the Cubs, but the Twins never told him the Cubs called.

AHHHH!!!
I think were doing just fine without him, but whoa! I doubt we woulda gotten him and still have the amazing team we do at the moment cause we woulda had to give up a lot, but just think about Zambrano and Santana going back to back in the post season.

I know what you mean...

...I sometimes get sucked into listening to the Score on weekends or if I happen to be home during the week. It’s like watching a car crash—sometimes you just can’t turn away.

Comcast Broadcasts

Has anyone with a tube TV noticed that during
Cub games on Comcast Sportsnet the picture will get big
during some innings ?
A weird fullscreen 3D like effect ?
Am I imagining this ?

What? is this before

or after the first six-pack. I haven’t noticed this at all. I have a 42” panasonic plasma and I haven’t seen anything like that.

It happens to me as well.

It’s always after a certain Comcast Sportsnet commercial, I just turn the channel then return and it’s fine.
