3 Baseball Games in 2 Days

I recently was able to attend 3 Chicago baseball games in 2 days.  The 2 Mets/Cubs games (bleacher) and then yesterday's White Sox/Yankees game (upper deck).  Here is the story of how I lost faith in all of humanity, I hope you enjoy...

Star-divide

Monday April 21st:

I work from home at my apartment in Albany Park (northwest neighborhood) on Monday's.  This allowed me to arrive at the stadium at a decent time for the 6pm ESPN game start time.  At 4:30 I hopped on my bike and arrived at the stadium and entered the bleachers around 5pm.  I decided to sit in "Fukudome Country" in right field, since I am a big fan and he is on my fantasy team.  I took in the Mets BP while drinking a cold beer and taking in some sunshine and impressing some high school kids with my upcoming baseball odyssey while waiting for my friend to arrive.

I don't think I need to impress upon anyone how electric the game was on Monday.  Lots of good baseball, and the fans in the right field bleachers were cheering for Fukudome every step of the way.  The only annoyance came from the amature high school kids behind me.  They asked me to buy them beer multiple times, but it seems that they had no troubles finding it elsewhere.  After the game I biked home and awaited my marathon baseball experience for Tuesday.

Tuesday April 22nd:

Beautiful day!  My roommate and I both rolled out of bed around 8am, got our lives in order and were out the door by 8:30am.  We biked to the ballpark again, grabbed some McDonalds breakfast, and stationed ourselves in line for the bleachers by 9:30am.  We were about 3 groups back from the front of the line.  After a few hours of mundaneness, the gates opened, and we entered the stadium.  A mad dash for front row seats ensued.  We positioned ourselves in right/center, pretty much right in between Fukudome and Pie.  A celebratory beer was in order, but unfortunately things went downhill from there.

I don't know what it was, but apparently it was a-hole day out in the bleachers yesterday.  The same electric energy from the night before was missing and replaced with large amounts of unnecessary drinking.  Right field was no longer "Fukudome Country", and turned into "I hate the Mets Country".

There was a singular Mets fan sitting right behind us.  He was a really nice guy.  Lived in DC, grew up a Mets fan in the Bronx.  Very polite, ignored the Mets hating banter, and simply cheered for his team.  Unfortunately the other people sitting around us didn't feel the same way.  When the Cubs went up 3-0 early in the game, he made the mistake of thinking that the score was only 2-0, and said "it's OK, it's only 2".  After that, the phrase "it's only 2" was repeated about 1,000 times in the next 2 hours.  About 987 of those came from A Woman that Shall Not Be Named, who apparently grew up in NY and wanted everyone to know it as well.  Things basically started getting uglier and uglier.

Fast forward to the Ronny Cedeno grand slam. Pandemonium ensued, and AWTSNBN was taunting the Mets fan behind me and putting her sweaty disgusting limbs on my roommate, as if he was going to be taken down to her level of child-ness.  I turn around amongst the celebration, and I get smacked in the chest by a full beer,  obviously meant for the non-deserving Mets fan.  Obviously, I was furious.  Not only did I (a die hard, well mannered Cubs fan) deserve such treatment, but neither did this Mets fan.  In fact, I don't believe that any individual under and circumstances deserves to have beer thrown on them, but then again, that's my personal opinion.  I turned in my rage to the security guard sitting 2 feet from me all game and said "are you going to do something about this?", while pointing to my beer-doused torso.  "I didn't see who threw it" he said.  That was enough.  My roommate and I left almost immediately.  Luckily it was 'free tshirt day' at the ballpark, so I had a replacement for my bike ride home.

After I biked home, showered, re-dressed, and walked my dog, I was on the train and headed to The Cell for the White Sox Game.

I met up with another one of my friends and tailgated with some of his co-workers outside of the stadium.  Free encased meats are always welcome in my world.  We entered the monstrosity of a ballpark with the idea that we would have a nice relaxing evening at the ballpark.

Because Wang was pitching for the Yankees, there were a large amount of Taiwanese fans enjoying the game and flying their native flag.  It was a great atmosphere and a relaxing spring night until The Couple that Shall Not Be Named showed up.  By this, I mean a ridiculously drunken young Sox fan couple that positioned themselves in the row between myself and my friends and a group of 9 or 10 Asian American Yankee fans.

For the next 20 minutes the female portion of TCTSNBN proceeded to yell the most ignorant and obscene things right into the ears of the Yankee fans sitting right in front of them.  "F**K the Yankees", "GO SOX", "F**K Wang", "I'm trashed!", "WOOOOOOOOHOOO!", "Do you think they can hear me?", etc, etc, etc.  Next thing you know, TCTSNBN began fighting because of the obvious embarrassment of the male portion of the dynamic duo. I swear that I saw him almost take a swing at her, it was that bad.  Luckily, the Sox park isn't the bleachers at Wrigley, so security intervened.  The pair from hell were banished to the outskirts of The Cell, where no one else was sitting.

Life was good again, we watched the rest of the game, and went home peacefully.

Overall, I can't really complain about the amazing day, the amazing baseball, and the chance to be with my friends.  But on the other hand, I seriously think I lost a little bit of respect for the rest of humanity in the meantime.

You must have been in an unusual section yesterday.

There were no problems at all in the LF bleachers, that I saw from our area, anyway.

I go to as many games as i can

with my busy schedule of school, work, and other things and I go to watch the GAME.

Stories like these honestly keep me from going and buying bleacher tickets. I always wanted to sit in the bleachers in Wrigley but for years upon years I chose to spend extra and get non bleacher tickets.

I would be pissed beyond belief if i had a cubs game ruined like that. I love watching the game and this would def put a hamper on that. Sorry to hear your story and sorry that people like that are even allowed in the park.

Interesting Timing

It is interesting timing, because i’ve just been standing up for cubs and bleacher fans with the whole “worst fans in baseball” thing from the Reds announcer.

Well

by attending both games you get see there are bad fans EVERYWHERE.

You also have to realize you cant call alot of the people fans unless you wanna call them BEER fans.

True

This is why the story is really interesting actually. Like I said at the beginning. I’ve lost some faith in humanity, not necessarily cubdome.

Thanks for sharing.

I always enjoy reading about people’s first-hand experiences at the games. (Hm, I guess that’s probably another thing that draws me to this blog, seeing as how Al is at almost every home game.) And sorry to hear about your experiences yesterday. I’ll never really understand baseball fans who go out of their way to violently antagonize fans of other teams.

I mean, if the Mets guy was loudly talking trash and drawing attention to himself, that’s one thing. But to target someone who’s just trying to watch the game and respectfully cheer on his or her team is just despicable and stupid. Doing that ends up ruining everyone’s time—and the security guard sounded like he was too jaded to step in until someone had lost a limb. Anyhoo, I’m obviously preaching to the converted here, so I’ll close it.

By the way, I lived in Albany Park for a few years, too—Montrose and Lawndale. I miss the proverbial hustle and bustle sometimes.

In my experience

on Monday, aside from a few teenagers, the Mets fans were respectable and into the game. I love have friendly banter between opposing team fans——I can be critical of my team and I think thats appreciated.

Also, from where Al sits, he really isnt ‘in the mix’ of the bleachers—mainly no one sits behind him or next to him and that section is rarely rowdy I would assume, it is a good seat though.

Agreed

I like where Al sits. I just wanted to experience the game from the front row for once, as did my roommate. I’ll probably end up sitting near Al for the rest of my 9 game package this year to tell you the truth. I don’t need to be ‘in the mix’ anymore if you ask me.

I like the 3rd or 4th row in the bleachers

Suprisingly they are easy to get and you dont have to get there and be in line forever. Plus, with the wall, its easier to see the game from 2nd, 3rd or 4th row. Just my opinion. Ive done first row and maybe if I was taller itd be easier to see over that wall.

I dont care where I sit, as long as Im there.

crazy lady at the cell...

As the guy sitting next to steinmer at the Sox game last night, I have no doubt the young woman in front of us was the worst fan I’ve ever seen at a game in any park. I’m no saint, but can’t imagine what would ever drive a person to act like this girl.

As a side note, last night was the first time I’ve been to “The Cell” since the year it opened. Can anyone tell me why I have to hear something blaring from the PA system every 20 to 30 seconds during the game?

The Mets fans sitting in section 231 during Monday nights game at Wrigley were excellent by the way. If I’m ever in New York, I hope I run into them.

agreed!

i went to opening day at the cell (the first time i had been there) and the PA speakers were VERY loud. definitely the loudest of the major league parks i have been to…

last year

at the game of Glavines 300th win/Woods debut i witnessed a someone similar thing. this older Mets fan probably about 45 years old was getting completely harassed by this drunk ass young adult most likely under age. Now i too drink underage at Cubs games but atleast i dont go threatening people and being obnoxious. These are the types of people that gives Cub fans a bad name

I was there on Tuesday

I always go to the Cubs-Mets games in Wrigley because my friend is a Mets fan. I can attest to a certain level of over-the-top animosity aimed at the Met fans in attendance, although I encountered most of it in the concession/restrooms area under the seats and in the mob leaving the field after the game. During the game, everybody was pretty respectful and I had a great time.

Funny story (at least to me): My buddies and I were walking back to our car behind a completely sloshed guy wearing a Paul LoDuca jersey with his equally hammered girlfriend, both of whom were enduring a good number of catcalls from exiting Cubs fans.

Well, my friend the Mets fan, somewhat inebriated himself (poor guy had to watch his team get blown out two days in a row after all), joined in the abuse – only he was taking him to task about wearing an outdated jersey!

“I’m more of a baseball fan than I am a Mets fan!” answered the LoDuca impersonator, swaying on his feet while supporting his falling-down drunk girlfriend.

Have to add...

I saw TWO Grand Slams yesterday between the Cubs and Sox games. Pretty amazing actually. Especially since Abreu is on my fantasy team.

I think you can enjoy beer

and watch the game at the same time; it’s just knowing your limits. If the type of people who drink to then turn into belligerent fans, then yeah, they shouldn’t drink. If you can have a couple and enjoy the game without ruining it for the others, then I would think it’s alright.

And heckling is going to happen anywhere, regardless if it’s in good fun or not. I’m not ashamed to admit that I heckle if an opposing fan comes into the field/stadium of the team I’m rooting for.. I think it’s a part of being a sports fan. But it’s really lame for people to not leave the guy alone. I feel bad for the guy, and for your shirt.
