Tribune Cuts Distribution To Michigan
For those unfamiliar or geographically challenged, Kalamazoo is a small city exactly half-way between Detroit and Chicago. It's a great place to live as a sports fan since there is about a 70-30 mix of Detroit fans and Chicago fans. So there are always good debates at work, watering holes, even family gatherings.
One avenue that has always allowed me to stay in touch with my beloved Cubbies, as well as all things Chicago, has been the Chicago Tribune. I grumbled and growled about the increased price of the 'worlds greatest newspaper" over the years, but thought that it was my way of supporting the Cubs payroll, and it was still better than the Sun-Times.
While at my local convenience store this morning, upon handing me my saved copy, the little old lady behind the counter informed me that as of Monday, the Tribune will no longer be distrubuted in Michigan. I was floored. Immediately i thought, there has to be somewhere in this town that will still get it delivered. So I came home and made a few phone calls. The response was the same, "no more Tribs, come Monday". In fact, the company that distributes the papers will also stop delivering the S-T as well.
I have no clue as to whose decision this was, but it's horrible. There are many options for my Chicago news, but the fact that I will no longer enjoy my morning paper and coffee is a travesty. I have several sports pages saved from different milestones I have had the opportunity to live through, and always envisioned what it would be like to buy the edition announcing the Cubs as the World Champs. I guess short of driving out of state to get a copy, I'll never know what that feels like.

Sorry to hear it.
And I know it’s not quite the same in terms of tangibility, but you still have the Web version.
(By the way, for clarity, maybe retitle your fanpost “Trib cuts distribution to Michigan” or something like that. No biggie—just a thought.)
Nanika Ga Okoru!
I changed the title.
This kind of thing isn’t surprising, given the cutbacks in the newspaper biz these days. WHEN the Cubs win the WS, I’m sure you can call them and order a paper delivered to you.
And, of course, these days you can read everything in the paper online.
Newspapers may altogether vanish in print form within 50 years. My kids don’t read them—they go online. Me, I like to read the print version. But younger generations don’t.

true
Ill read the print version if it’s lying around my parent’s house, but I’d much rather read it online. Even if it was some kind of subscription service you had to pay for (say for a downloadable pdf version) I’d still rather have that.

Wow
Your user name is kinda close to mine. hahaha
But yeah, that is a surprise. I would go and get a Trib on Sundays sometimes instead of the Kalamazoo Gazette. That is really too bad that they arent selling it here anymore.
Though it's not surprising,
it still sucks. I occasionally buy the Sunday Trib. I live in Bangor, MI, about 30 miles west of Kzoo. Hopefully this won’t be a permanent stoppage. Maybe the Trib Co. will realize just how many readers they have in MI. Lots of Chicago fans throughout SW MI.
BTW, Kzoo Cubs Fan, are you the brother of the guy at Venezia’s in South Haven? I see him every week. He’s a good man.

Yeah
That is my little bro. He said that someone from this site goes in there all the time. I was wondering if that was you.

there's nostalgia involved
with having a tangible newspaper with your team all over the cover. I will open up my personal archives of successful seasons past during the brutal winter months, or during a typical “June swoon” us Cubs fans have come to be accustomed to.

so print out the stories you like or save them on yer computer. the disappearance of wasteful print editions does not prevent you from keeping stories that you find to be worth keeping.

That's not quite the same thing...
... a printout, compared to a newspaper.

Can you still buy those papers in Kalamazoo?

It's called the Internet
All the good content of the Chicago Tribune is readily available via it’s website. When I travel that’s how I keep abreast of things.
a web page printout
doesn’t look nearly as sweet in a frame.
