Memo to Bobby Howry

Everyone knows you constantly pitch away.

Why don't you try coming inside one fking time. Did you see that HR off you tonight? Pathetic. Everyone and their monkey knew the pitch was away, you monkey.

Dear Bob...

It’s not all your fault, If we could’ve just come through with the bases loaded, you wouldn’t even have been in that situation.

P.S. Try pitching inside sometimes. Thanks.

nice

and i mean, it took him a while to get it together last year anyways – at least the rest of the team (minus morandini part deux) isn’t trying get it together like last year too

Does Howry

have a pitch other than his fastball? It really is amazing that he has done as well as he has in his career. As a hitter, all you have to do is look for the fastball away and smack it into right field (or left field if you’re a lefty).

Yes

He rarely throws a crappy slider, I believe.

Second that!

And alcohol may not be the blame here. This is a rather consistent blather that has little substance to it.

by blackhawk24 on Apr 28, 2008 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I thought the exact same thing!

Why on a 0-2 count don’t you try just coming inside? Instead you put a letter high fastball just a little outside, I hope he makes the neccessary changes because he is an important part of our bullpen

Little Lord Fontenot

is the reason we lost. If he gets the run in, it goes Marmol then Wood. No Howry needed. I’ll say it again…only mop-up for that guy til June. He sucks.

Fontenot has horrible AB’s in big situations.

Lou totally over managed the 8th. Best PH got burned without swinging the stick.

Let Ronnie hit, see where it goes. Hopefully Lou learned from last night.

Soriano should hit 5th. Period.

I really would consider

switching Eric Patterson with Fontenot. Only if EP wasn’t hurt.

Develop an f-ing change up!

Seriously, everyone knows that Howry throws fastball after fastball after fastball. How hard would it be to develop a pitch where he holds the ball in the palm of his hand like real pitchers do?

by dr stabbingworth on Apr 26, 2008 12:32 PM CDT reply actions

Banned from Wrigley?

Lemon, are you the guy who’s banned from Wrigley for walking on the field to confront Howry last year? Pretty similar situation here. We know he’s not sharp early. We just hope he gets better late like he’s done the last couple years. Be patient.

by goldglove on Apr 26, 2008 1:09 PM CDT reply actions

So if this is so obviously known,

why does he get put in in such a tight situation where he absolutely cannot let in a run?

It's gotta be the shoes, folks, it's gotta be the shoes...

by Schwa on Apr 26, 2008 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Two reasons, by my estimation...

1. Lou has to find out if he’s dependable. Unfortunately, that requires tight spots. If Howry really is THIS bad, then we need to know as soon as possible if an acquisition is needed to replace him. Personally, I think he’ll be fine….leading to the fact that he obviously has some kinks to work out, and needs time on the hill to find his groove. Yes, he should find that time in blowouts and low-stress situations, but at this early juncture in the season, I think Lou still has enough faith in Bob not to reduce him to a junk-game pitcher.

2. As noted from the end of the game thread, people are more than concerned with the arm of Marmol. It is early in the season, and the fact remains that one has to do everything possible to preserve the best arms. In this case, it was not trotting out Carlos again.

Yet, the world is crumbling….can we at least enjoy this start Lemon…......(insert knee jerk here)

I'd be

more concerned with Wuertz. The “slider specialists” special pitch ain’t so special this year. Howry will come around like he did last year. He’ll be throwing his 94 MPH fastball that has lots of movement and getting guys out. Lou just needs to let him work in non pressure situations until he’s up to par. Wuertz is just spinning the ball up there at 84 MPH and he can’t throw his “wrinkle” for strikes anymore. His slider is the only reason he’s a big league pitcher. When Eyre comes back off the DL, I bet Wuertz is the one that’s gone.

by SoCal19 on Apr 26, 2008 10:04 PM CDT reply actions

If his velocity really is down...

... then maybe Wuertz will be headed to the DL. Remember, he had some sort of minor injury problem at the beginning of spring training. Maybe he’s hurt.

Geees more cliff-jumping

What the hell is going to happen when they blow a game in late August or September.

He starts slow, he always starts slow. Good excuse? Probably not, but it is what it is. Same like last year; it won’t be until about Memorial Day until he kicks it up a couple notches.

You wanna rip on him, rip on him for trying to challenge a hitter with at fastball that isn’t as fast as it should be, with less break than it should have a right down the pipe. That’s what you rip on, not what he actually threw.

Besides it was high and outside, that was a lucky swing on a waste pitch. And if he came inside with the batter keeping his hands close to the vest and pulled it down the LF line for a HR, all the cliff jumpers would be ripping on him for that.

And another thing (sound like Rosenbloom again), if you had clue about how pitchers in general approach an AB, a waste pitch 80-90% of the time is NOT inside, its outside and even more often low outside the zone.

This team is 16-9 with some maddening inconsistencies in the early going and they are still one of the best teams in MLB right now. This isn’t the short-class A league that plays something like 70 games which would put them around the 1/3rd point of the season. They’re less than a 1/6th of the season.

Lets see where they’re at come say the end of the Rockies series here the end of May. That’ll have given Lou plenty of time to assess the situation and if changes are to be in order you can bet he’ll be bending Jim’s ear.

One last thing….Al, if you read this can you remind people here again that the diary poster has to put something of substance in their diary. For once, just once, I’d love to see how well some of these cliff jumpers can play the game themselves.
