Future Cubs rotation
You have to figure that Jason Marquis and Ted Lilly aren't in the Cubs starting rotation plans beyond 2009 (maybe earlier depending on trades). Ryan Dempster may be in that same boat too because if he has a decent year he'll seek a larger contract than what would make sense for the team. That leaves 3 rotation slots to be filled in the near future. Who do you think will end up filling them? Will the Cubs go for pitching in the free agent market?
Starting pitching is one area where the Cubs can control their payroll, which is already quite high. They definitely have arms that can fill these spots and will be paying them very little for many years. The probable candidates include: Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher, Donald Veal and Jeff Samardzija. I am really fine with letting them compete for the spots and see what they can do. Thoughts on this?

Gallagher and the Shark
Should have a decent chance of cracking the rotation by 2010. Having one more quality pitcher to round out the rotation would be great. I’m not sure we have the cash or the prospects to trade/sign a #1, but 2s and 3s are relatively easy to obtain.

Gallagher
should be ready next season. If he’s not, then he was either injured or he isn’t the prospect we thought he’d be.

Sabathia if he becomes available.
Side note…I read in the rumors at msn that Dan Uggla may become available with all the arbitration eligible players on the team.
I like Uggla.

On baseball tonight
last night they were discussing Sabathia’s availability due to Cleveland’s inability to sign him to a contract thus far. He would look amazing in our rotation right behind zambrano

In House
Given the arms that are ready to compete (Marshall, perhaps Gallagher), those that are developing with promise (Samardzija, Veal), those still injured and unrefined (Juan Mateo, Angel Guzman) and those currently in the bullpen who may be excellent starters in the future (Hart and Marmol), I’d be quite pleased with in-house options being exercised.

Follow Oakland's lead...do not trade good starting prospects
For me I think for the Cubs to go beyond a playoff contender they need to develop another top of the order starter. We know the lineup and I think the club plan on building Marquis’s value up in June and hope one of those minor league starters continue to emerge for August. In the meantime I could see the plan of moving Lieber up to the rotation for those 6-8 weeks.
Marshall might be really destined for the bullpen. He warms up fast, he appears effective there and his stamina is the situation. As long as he is useful that is fine. The same goes for Hart as he has a dominant slider and an above average FB but that is not enough for a 21st century MLB starter. Essentially both Marshall and Hart (or Wuertz) could replace Eyre and Howry next year or at least provide an option to.
So we are back looking for a top of the rotation pitcher, and that appears by potential to be Samardzija, at least by stuff, especially if he learns to command the splitter with his FB and bender. Callahan appears to be a good middle of the rotation starter who will give quality innings who can replace Dempster.
As for Lilly he signed a 4 year deal, so next year he is here. That gives the Cubs until 2011 to develop another starter, could be Veal or someone else.

bullpen
I agree on Marshall. I think he might be a really useful piece to the bullpen in the future. I’d still like to see the team acquire a lefty specialist to complement Marshall, although Eyre could fit that role if he comes back healthy. With Marmol, Hart, and Wuertz under the team’s control next year, I don’t see any reason to resign Howry.

Why would the Cubs give up on Lilly?
granted he’s has a cold start this year, but he was excellent last year and has few good starts lately. Marquis is likely done with the Cubs by the end of this year. if they don’t trade him in season they’ll probably release or exile him to the pen come september and give some of the in-house options a start or two to see what they got.
I'd have to agree that Samardija appears to have both the stuff and the mentality to be a top of the rotation guy, and for all the negatives people keep bringing up about Gallagher, He gets people out. if both of them don't crack under major-league pressure, then i think by 2010 we'll see a solid 1-2-3 in those two and Zambrano. After that i have no idea, but with the parity we have in baseball right now that's likely good enough to compete on a yearly basis.

I agree
Marquis isnt an ace, he isnt a number 2. But put him in the 5 spot, hes better than most. Im curious to see what his numbers are compared to the leagues #5’s. Ill check that out and get back to this topic.

a good reference
for how good Ted Lilly is going to be is Bronson Arroyo.
Average AL pitcher, switches leagues, has great season, becomes mediocre once again.

I think the Cubs' rotation
will be defined quite a bit by whether the team wins the WS and also by how productive the corner men are. As long as Lee and Ramirez stay productive and the team stays competitive, I think Hendry will be willing to buy pitching upgrades. If we win, though, it would give us the opportunity to see what the youth can do.
For my part, I don’t think any of the Cubs prospects look like they could be ready to be a #2 by the end of 2009. That could change as the year goes on.

Hendry
Who said he will be the Cubs GM by then? From what I’ve read most new owners like to hire new GM’s. I hope that isn’t the case and they can tell that Hendry has done a lot for this team.

That's the wild card here...
...no one knows who the President of the club is going to be in 09 (it sure won’t be Kenney) and whether that guy will immediately bring in his own people.
Let’s worry about this season, and hope the Cubs pull out all the stops to win now, because you don’t know who will be calling the shots in the front office next year.

It's probably not going to be a question of whether he wants to stay...
It’s going to be a question of whether the Cubs want him to stay. If he pitches great all year, the Cubs may want to keep him around. If he fades back to his typical form as a starter, he’s not coming back, discounted salary or not.

i'd take a severly discounted salary
to pitch in Wrigley, in fact, I’ll pay them. Sign me up, I can give up runs as good as Howry can.

Well
I think Carlos Zambrano and Ted Lilly are the only “certainties” in the rotation beyond this year. Sean Gallagher may be in the future mix. Ditto Rich Hill. Ryan Dempster will be a free agent after this season and will likely command a ridiculous contract Jeff Smardizija seems to me to be a couple years away at the earliest. I’m not wowed by what he is doing in the minors. It may be a case of the hype overwhelming his true major league potential. Time will tell.

A guy who might be on the horizon next year
is James Russell. He just got promoted to AA. If he pitches well the rest of the season, he’d be in the mix for 2009 and certainly in 2010.

MDBNIU says this a lot. I don’t put much stock in it. Ryan loves playing for the Cubs. If Kerry Wood can take a smaller offer to stay and pitch, so can Ryan. It’s not like he’d be making minimum wage. There are more important things than money, and the best baseball players understand that.

Instead of looking ahead to next year...
how about obtaining a decent # 2 for this year? The Rangers are pretty awful and there are rumors that they might unload Millwood and would most likely command a lot in return. I believe he’s signed through ‘10…
