Minor League Wrap--April 28
Just because the Cubs took the day off doesn't mean the minors sleep.
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs started their west coast swing with an 11-3 shellacking at the hands of the Fresno Grizzlies.
Sean Gallagher proved he was human tonight by getting hit for five runs in 5.2 innings. Gallagher allowed five hits and four walks while striking out five. Carmen Pignatiello relieved Gallagher in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and two out. He walked both batters he faced, forcing in two runs. Then Randy Wells entered the game and allows a grand slam to the fist batter he faces. Wells would later allow three more runs of his own to score, making his line 2.1 innings pitched with four runs on seven hits and a walk. And Toronto gave him back to us?
Second baseman Bobby Scales went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBI. Left fielder Corey Coles went 2 for 3 with a double.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies outslugged the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, 8-6.
Lots of ugly lines for the Smokie pitchers. Starter Tanner Watson lasted only three innings and allowed two runs on four hits and four walks. Watson struck out four. Reliever Matt Avery had the best line on the night, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings.
Ed Campusano gave up a run in the 1.1 innings he worked. Chris Shaver was worse, taking credit for two runs in a third of an inning. Rocky Roquet vultured the win by blowing a save opportunity with one run on three hits and a walk in one inning. Jesse Estrada pitched a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season.
Left fielder Matt Camp went 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base. He's trying too hard though. He was picked off of first base twice. One of the pickoffs did lead to a run scored via a Diamond Jaxx error. DH Kyle Reynolds hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot. It was his only hit in a 1 for 4 night.
Right fielder Ryan Harvey went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Second baseman Matt Matulia had a 2 for 3 night with a double and an RBI.
Daytona Cubs
The D-Cubs were shut down by the Jupiter Hammerheads, 2-1.
Alex Maestri had one of his worst outings of the year tonight, but pitched out of a lot of trouble and ended up with a line that wasn't too bad, despite taking the loss. Maestri went 4.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits and five walks. Maestri just doesn't have the same control as a starter that he had as a reliever. What he does have is the same ability to strike batters out, as he punched out five Hammerheads.
Jeremy Papelbon tossed 1.2 innings of shutout relief. Casey Lambert allowed an unearned run in two innings.
The Cubs tonight were shut down by Hammerhead starter Graham Taylor, who tossed eight scoreless innings. I only mention him because Taylor was the pitcher who was supposed to come to the Cubs in the Jacque Jones trade with Florida that fell apart last June.
Center fielder Jonathan Wyatt went 2 for 4 with a double and the only Cub run. Ty Wright went 2 for 4.
Peoria Chiefs
OK, some minor leaguers did decide to take the day off, but they had a good excuse: rain.

I would guess
that he’s out there with the mindset of not walking anybody. Sometimes, that leads to walks. Other times, it leads to grooving a pitch and getting hit for a grand slam (ala Randy Wells). But I’m just guessing.
Pignatiello is better than this, and I just have to think that he’s out thinking himself and has lost his confidence. Or maybe he and Neal Cotts have transferred their abilities to each other this season. Or something.

Here's a little news for you all...
...the Walrus has gone. I don’t see this mentioned anywhere else, so let me be the first to recognize that Les Walrond has been released. So, y’know, we won’t have Les to kick around anymore—unless he comes back as a coach, of course.

nice!
Walrond had a decent year filling out the rotation for the I-Cubs in 2006, but I’m glad to have other pitchers move up to take his slot.
Corresponding roster moves were Justin Berg getting moved up to Iowa and “The Intern” getting promoted to Tennessee.

Justin Berg...
... was acquired for Matt Lawton. Thought he might have some potential; maybe he finally does.
Lawton was acquired for Jody Gerut who was acquired for Jason Dubois. Maybe Dubois will finally produce something for this team.

Actually Gallagher got the first two outs
in the 6th before loading them up. His line on the night would have been decent had Piggy been able to get a quick 3rd out. Instead he walks two and the next guy gives up the grand slam. Thus, 3 of the 5 runs Gallagher gave up came after he left.
It is interesting how things like this can skew how we look at a performance. His line last night sucked but with some good relief work he would have had a solid start (5.2 IP w/ 2ER).

Yeah
I’ll change that. Sometimes I screw up. Sometimes the box scores are screwed up and get changed later, although on that one, I did scan the recap, and those are rarely mistaken. But I wasn’t really looking for Gallagher’s line in the recap, I was scanning to see what happened to Pignatiello and Wells.

Walrond released
I knew about Berg and “the Intern” getting promoted last night after I finished, but didn’t want to go to bed rather than add that. I didn’t know about Walrond, but it’s hardly a shock.
I assume Les Walrond is going to look around for a job and then retire. From all accounts, Walond is a great guy and I tend to believe them because no one that crappy pitches that long without having made some friends and getting a reputation as a solid clubhouse man. Again, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Walrond in spring training next year as an instructor.
I’m going to say that one of the big reasons that teams are sometimes hesitant to promote players to AAA is that level can be populated with bitter people with bad attitudes and even worse habits. Not all guys “on the way down” take it with class, and those attitudes can sometimes infect guys on their way up. It’s a testament to Walrond’s character that he hung around this long.
“The Intern” has really been the prospect who has improved his stock the most so far this season. He’s pitched great for Daytona. Berg’s promotion is more likely just a way of opening a spot for Russell in Tennessee. Sometimes guys get promoted simply because they need a roster opening on a team and there isn’t anyone they want to demote. Berg hasn’t pitched badly, but he’s had control issues in AA. They really don’t care if the PCL rips Berg up, like they would with Samardzija or Veal. If he succeeds in AAA, great. The Cubs have an extra choice for the bullpen. If he doesn’t, then no big deal.

Am I supposed to know who "The Intern" is?
Because I don’t.

I compare him to Prior
Russell has some similarities to “The Employee”, including having worked extensively with Tom House (although Russell is a lefty). So I nicknamed Russell “The Intern”, in reference to Prior, in in my preview and then decided I was going to keep using it until it stuck. :-)
