Sports Illustrated Cover

Is this really necessary, Sports Illustrated?  I mean, I like it, but, Ugh.

Why

did they have to do this to us again?

Your wish...

...is granted. I wish they hadn’t done this as well. Why didn’t they give the Diamondbacks the cover? They’re “super duper,” right MDBNIU?

Didn't Kosule and the Cubs have to agree to this?

If so, why the hell did they? I know it is superstition and all but c’mon!

Calm down.

I don't think the Cubs have editorial control

I’m sure they agreed to the photo and having Fukudome on the cover, but they probably had no clue what the headlines or anything along those lines would be.

It's a superstition that has some backing

remember this one . . .

True...

Didn’t they also have a season preview cover with something like “Hell Freezes Over” on it?

And of course there was...

...this one from last year. The Cubs did win the division, though. Does that count as reversing the curse? Suppose not.

Sori

He’s laying down because his leg is injured.

by Arbusto on Apr 29, 2008 12:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep, that's probably where it all started.

The leg cramped up while he was waiting for the photographer to take the picture. Damn you, Sports Illustrated!

Oh, well.

Every once in a while a Cub will appear on the cover if the team’s doing well. At least they didn’t give the Cubs the season preview issue as they did in 2004. THAT was the kiss of death.

Note that on this year’s preview, prominently featured was one of the Tigers (I can’t remember who right now). Look what’s happened to them so far.

They've recovered nicely

11-15 looks pretty good when you consider they were 0-7. Plus, they’ve already climbed to 5th in MLB in runs scored.

Meh

I don’t put too much stock in this stuff . . . no more reasonable than the goat.

(could also be because an annoying ex-girlfriend put a LOT of stock in stuff like this . . . can’t be sure)

Not that it would have the same gusto...

and “gusto” always trumps reason in journalism, but couldn’t the caption about Fukudome be something along the lines of, “Fukudome quickly becoming a Chicago cult hero” or something like that? With the national media, it all comes down to the 100 year drought. It’s such a nice, round number they can hardly contain themselves. Even so, I do look forward to reading this article.

After seeing what Sports Illustrated covers did to my Packers this year

I’m just a wee mad about this one. I know most of the board were happy to see the jinx in full force in those regards, but we can all agree this sucks the big one.

No worry

Dome is strong enough minded guy, and Michael Jordan made it 49 times..

Just another Curse we'll break this year!

Ah stink ‘em… if somebody out there wants to jinx us, let ‘em try. This is OUR year! The more people try to ruin it, the sweeter the final out in October is GONNNNNA BE!!!!
