Are we Alone?
I just have to ask this? Everywhere I go i see nothing but disrespect thrown at the cubs and cubs fans.
Sometimes i wonder if Al is the only one on SBNATION who keeps posts clean and is respectful to rival clubs.
http://www.brewcrewball.com/2008/4/29/470171/game-thread-26b#comments
Is the latest thing Ive seen from our fellow SBNATION sites.
(also after reading that interview i was shocked Al spent the time to answer the questions because they were almost slanderous)
Some of you may think im amking a big deal out of nothing but I find this kind of stuff extremely disrespectful and I really dont unserstand where the hate comes from.
Are we alone in trying to be a respectful site?

Cub Fans
Cub fans could perhaps be some of the worst fans in all of sports. I mean that in the nicest way possible, but how can you complain about other fans being disrespectful, when Cub fans boo 75% of their team almost every single game. If you can’t even respect your own team, why should any other fans respect them?
If you want to understand where the hate come from, come up to Miller Park when the Cubs are in town. Listen to those Cub fans, and you will know exactly where the hate comes from.

maybe
but i’m willing to bet that this guy blogs on the lil’ bcb:

(that’s a brewers cap in the unlikely event that there could be any confusion as to his chosen team.)

Yeah 75%
that number sounds about right…for someone who just made their entire response up to try and make a point that doesn’t exist.
The booing is nasty but I’d say the % of players bood actually is closer to 5-10%. This is why many discussions cannot be had with other fans (Brewers or not) because it is too easy to just make stuff up or say things when frustrated that are either not true, or simply idiotic.
Calm down.

They Hate Cuz They Ain't
Simple as that, a lot of franchises and their fans are jealous of us simply put. But I honestly don’t think people hate on us all that much.

I live in Milwaukee, and...
I am a huge Cubs fan. I love the rivalry, love the fact that these games have meaning whether it is April or September. I understand the fact that Brewers fans have issue with how many Cubs fans come north for Cubs v. Brewers, but if you live 90 miles north of 8 million people, in a town of 500,000, how can you not expect the place to pushed to capacity with the opposing teams fans.
This will be a tight race all year long. Everyone on both sides of the aisle knew that to begin the season. If my fellow Cubs fans back in Chicago want to feel a little better tonight, just think about the amazing things you get to do when the Cubs are not playing, instead of sitting in Chicago’s most northern suburb and waiting for the 9th month of winter to come to an end.

even if cubs fans are "bad" or "disrespectful"
is having such despicable fans better than having no fans at all?

that’s from the brewers’ opening homestand in ‘07. why did they even put an upper deck in that place? oh yeah, for when the Cubs come to town and give meaning to their existence.

Hey - leave Bernie out of this!
As much as I dislike Miller Park (and I do – it’s like playing in a friggin convention hall), I gotta give them props for keeping Bernie’s slide from County Stadium. Not sure if it’s the original slide – I’m guessing not – but still, I respect their effort at keeping a little bit of tradition going. That and tailgating. And Kopp’s frozen custard…. And Saz’s ribs… Sorry Kinky Reggae, I can’t help myself… ;-)

One thing I'd like to see...
... is being respectful of other teams’ fans. We can have rivalries, we can even do a little trash talking… but let’s keep it (reasonably) clean, and let’s not make personal attacks. It’s baseball. Keep some perspective.

I agree completely Al.
This is supposed to be fun-trash talking can be fun but when it turns mean spirited and vicious it goes way over the line.
There’s definite a lot of people who are jealous of the Cubs and their fan base. Sometimes I think the best thing to do is to just rise above it. For instance, I think it would be great if, the next time the Reds are in town, we messed with their (and Marty Brennaman’s) heads by actually cheering them.

at the game i went to.....
I was at the second game of the season for the cubs vs brewers. And I am not saying the actions I saw taken by cubs fans was in any way acceptable, however the cubs were losing and the brewers fans would not stop running their mouths. The first guy was in the CF bleachers, he had a sign that read something like "Naming right: the Miller Park of the South" or something like that. Anyways he kept standing up in the middle of the game holding the sign and making sure everyone saw it and him in his brewers jersey(this all took place just below the scoreboard). The second guy, when the same was in like the 8th inning, kept standing up and giving the middle finger and saying f the cubs and would not shut up. So cubs fans threw anything and everything at him. I do feel sorry for the older two men sitting in front of them cause they were hit with things too (all this took place in the CF just below the walk way between the two levels of the bleachers. I also saw 3 other fights that day, two were with people that showed up wearing white sox jerseys and the other was about 8 guys fighting as we left the bleachers. Security was on top of most of these things but my friends that I was with have been to many cubs games in the bleachers and have only saw maybe a fight or two over all. Is it normal to see actions like this?

There have been more problems...
... with the Brewers in town than with other teams, even the White Sox or Cardinals. I’m not sure what this says about either Cub or Brewer fans, but I wish it would stop. This could be a real good rivalry if it didn’t get so nasty.

agreed...
i am not going to say the Cubs fans were in the right by doing what they did, and to be hitting what my friends called “the founding fathers”(in referance to the older men) with trash was uncalled for. But at the same time the Breweres fans were out of line. Not that they really deserved it but i think securty should have removed or at least talked to the Brewers fans, instead they kicked out alot of Cubs fans.

I concur
Honestly, if you are going to gloat like that, you really are asking for an ass kicking. I don’t condone the actions taken by the Cubs fans but I would never gloat and make an ass of myself in another stadium if my team was winning ur just asking for it.

The anonymity has a lot to do with it
People are very brave when hiding behind keyboards—fans of every team.
Yes, it could be a great rivalry—but there is far too much mean spiritedness. The Brewers fans that I work with and are friends with outside of work, for the most part, are knowledgable, respectful baseball fans.
The ones that I encounter at Miller Park often are, too. But while Cubs fans are unfairly associated with a handful of drunks, Brewers fans might recognize that they could likewise be associated with petty jealousy of a handful of their own.

And the Brewers TV announcers don't help
When Milwaukee won a game before the ASB in 2006, I thought then-announcer Daren Sutton was having a conniption talking about the Brewers “BEATING THEIR BITTER RIVALS”. It sounded like Kermit the Frog introducting “tonight’s very special guest”.
Bill Schroeder goes out of his way to villify everything Chicago—he really comes across as someone who thinks he’s a big fish . . . but he’s in a very small pond.
Actually, people like this on both sides scare me—it is a game . . . get some perspective.

Ok that didn't make sense
To post as a reply to Al, because obviously people aren’t hiding behind a keyboard in the stands . . . was meant more as a response to the original.

I don't know
I was not calling any individual out.
The point is that every team has some jerks that root for them— and the civility is generally lower on the internet.
Some of the garbage that gets said online would never be said to a person’s face. Wheter it’s fear of retribution, actually realizing the other person is, in fact, a person, whatever.

Right here?
I don’t think here, is where you are. I was engaged yesterday with someone (as many saw) and I feel that many things get said here (or on the internet) that would not be said if someone was standing right in front of them.
And then again, I am sure there are many who would absolutely say the same things to another person’s face.
I think the formal is more common.
Calm down.

It something that has been complained about
on this site a few times . . . the fact that the cubs fan base (in recent years) has been portrayed as the constantly drunk, frat boy type who doesn’t give a lick about the game, but just goes to Wrigley to drink and be seen. While, as we all know, this type of Cub fan is the vast minority, it has gotten the most media time.
It’s funny though because the I remember watching some of the more recent national telecasts of Cubs games (I’m stuck in Minnesota) and hearing the analysts comment on how knowledgeable Cubs fans are when they stand and cheer in the middle of a game or inning knowing that on important pitch or at-bat is occurring. (although brewfan2 is right about the booing, it has gotten a little out of control recently)
IMO that hate stems from jealousy. We have a great stadium that is always packed. Whenever the Cubs go on the road, the visiting stadium has more Cubs fans than home team fans.

Righ
I LOVE talking ‘friendly’ banter between other knowledgable fans. The fans that need to stand up for every out and do a 360 in order to let everyone know they are clapping are asking for the attention.
I like the friendly banter because you could learn about other teams that way as well.

That's why I love this blog
I love learning from people who are more knowledgeable (not sure if thats spelled right, how ironic) than I am about the sport, that is the only way you learn. When I was younger I used to try and be as obnoxious as possible at ballgames but now I would much rather sit and talk to rival fans about their teams when I sit next to them at games. The disturbing fans are the ones in their late 20’s on up that still act like they are drunk college kids at baseball games.

Or those in their 50's . . .
There is one coworker of mine that was in a small group at a Brewers-Cardinals game last week. He was heckling just to heckle, despite the fact that we had employees there from overseas . . . and had no idea what he was talking about when it came to strategy.

Completely off topic...
...when I saw the title of this fanpost, I was hoping it would be about the increasingly likely prospect that there is life on other planets and, yes, they could be Cubs fans. I was a little disappointed to find that it was really about Brewers fans, many of whom, appropriately enough, appear to be from another planet.
