Milwaukee Brewers @ Chicago Cubs

It's his first day as Official BCB Photographer, so David sent me several excellent photos taken yesterday.

vs. Mil -- vs. Cubs

Stats are 2007 season stats

Ryan Dempster's last start was, oddly enough, against the Brewers on May 4, 2005, and he went 6.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs. Only one current Brewer has more than 10 career AB vs. Dempster -- Jason Kendall, who's 12-for-26 against him, all singles, no RBI.

The Cubs are 5-1 vs. Bush in his career, and he had a 7.00 ERA in three starts vs. the Cubs last year (the Cubs won all three). Aramis Ramirez is .316/.381/.632 lifetime vs. Bush with 3 doubles, a HR and 7 RBI.

This Japanese-language article, loosely translated, says that the Cubs have already sold out of Fukudome T-shirts in large and XL sizes.

Finally, Bruce Miles writes that the Cubs are after Carlos Zambrano to improve his diet and fluid intake, particularly during games. Here's an interesting note from that article:

The team also is working with the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, which will go as far as analyzing Zambrano's sweat to help determine his nutritional needs.

Did you know that Gatorade had a "Sports Science Institute"? Me either.

Today's game is on WGN and FSN Wisconsin, on the usual radio stations and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Envision two things today

1. A slugfest

2. A beanball war ... Ned Yost has intimated he is none to pleased by the hit by pitches in the first two games ... David Bush pitches aggressively inside to begin with

Quite honestly...

...I don't blame him for being a little pissed, and I am a little surprised they didn't toss at someone when they were up big yesterday.

At some point, they are going to have to send a message back, whether it is today or another day.

Yep

Cubs plunked Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder, two of the young cornerstones of the Brewers. Ned Yost is old school in the same manner that Sweet Lou is. Rest assured Milwaukee will send a return message to the Cubs and members of the lineup. It might be today given that this is getaway day. The other fuel to the fire is that I think Milwaukee is sick and tired of hearing how the Cubs are superior, and how they crashed and burned the second half of 2007.

by MDBNIU on Apr 3, 2008 10:05 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There is no question...

...the Brewers were mentally ready for this series and they are playing like it. They have motivation to show everyone they are a good team, and last year was a fluke.

Coming off winning the division, the Cubs simply don't have that same motivation as of yet. I don't use that as an excuse, but the veterans are not mentally sharp right now and they know its a long season.

One thing I will say, it will not behoove the Cubs to fall behind the Brewers by a wide margin again this year. If the Brewers can keep Sheets healthy and get any kind of pitching from their other starters and their pen, they will win their share of games. I am very impressed with their hitters, and they will score runs in bunches this year. Braun is a guy who is really turning into a monster and he has a great approach at the plate.

As always, it will be an interesting year.

True.

In response to the "plunking" comment above, does anyone think Weeks and Fielder were hit on purpose?

by Al on Apr 3, 2008 10:20 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I really don't think so...

Weeks simply leans over the plate and it's going to happen. Wood had a lot more things to worry about than to hit Weeks in the 9th inning of a tie game. As for Prince? That's possible, but I see no real hard evidence to support why it would happen...

by bap on Apr 3, 2008 10:23 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not yesterday, but...

I think Wood hit Weeks on purpose Opening Day to return the favor on DeRosa.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

by ballhawk on Apr 3, 2008 10:24 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I disagree.

You're going to hit someone on purpose leading off the 9th in a 0-0 game? Not likely. The ball was wet and conditions were awful. It just got away from Kerry.

by Al on Apr 3, 2008 10:29 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes...

Add on top of that my memory of Wood coming into games earlier in his career and struggling with control/hitting people way too often. It's one thing if Howry comes in and that happens but Woody is especially wild sometimes on the first batter.

by bap on Apr 3, 2008 10:30 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

disagree though.....

After he hit Weeks Monday he had pretty damn good control from what I remember.....I honestly think it was to deliver a message and just let the inning get away from him from there....

by By Santo's Grace on Apr 3, 2008 11:13 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

IF and that's a big if....

what you're saying is true, though I don't think it is. If Wood is throwing at batters in a 0-0 game in the 9th inning, he is doing it on his own accord and should not be tolerated from your closer.

by Great Odin's Raven on Apr 3, 2008 11:56 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dont see

why Wood would want to hit Weeks who can steal a base in a 0-0 tie in the 9th.

Just seems fishy that he didn't have any problems hitting his spots after that first pitch...

He shows excellent control all spring

- Our second baseman got hit earlier
- Their second baseman is at the plate
- Ball was NOT thrown up and in, it was just in
- Wood is a warrior + Brewers are top rival for the division = opportunity to send message
- Wood is definitely warming up to the closer mentality, he's always been intimidating

The only person that knows for sure is Wood and of course he'd never say he did if he did. I'm just saying my assessment of the circumstantial evidence is that he did do it on purpose. And more importantly, if you're the type of fan that feels there is a place in baseball for throwing inside and the occasional HBP, he did it the right way.

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on Apr 3, 2008 1:09 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They weren't hit on purpose

But, that's irrelevant. I am sure that Lou and the Cub hitters recognize that they stand excellent chance of seeing payback. The fairness of the retailation doesn't enter into these things.

MPH73, I agree 100% with your points. Ben Sheets and Yovani Gallardo have the probability of forming one of the best 1-2 punches in baseball. They stay healthy to go along with that lineup and look out National League. The Brewers achilles heel is going to be that bullpen though. They need to hope that Soloman Torres and Dave Riske can give them tons of effective innings or otherwise they have a big problem brewing.

by MDBNIU on Apr 3, 2008 10:28 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And if such payback were to occur

I'm not sure the Cubs would take too much offense to it, unless said pitches are above the shoulders.

No...

...but that is besides the point Al. When you have your better players getting hit for any reason, it is really difficult for a manager to sit by and say "that's ok".

It's all about protecting your players, and with how these situations work, it is going to be very difficult for the Brewers to simply chalk it up to circumstance.

Depending on how strongly Yost feels about it, he will either instruct his pitcher to hit a certain Cub player regardless of the score, or he will tell Fielder and Weeks - "we will respond to both of you being hit, but I am not guaranteeing it will be today, depending on the game situation."

I don't know when they play again, but I would lean towards someone getting nailed today.

Why does everyone think there'll be a beanball war?

That seems pretty stupid to start three games into the season.

Because Ned Yost is a hothead.

I personally don't think there will be one, but if anyone would start this crap early in the season, it would be Yost. Him and the Brewers are still pissed about last year, and I could see them "making a statement" by doing something like that.

by Great Odin's Raven on Apr 3, 2008 9:33 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You're right about Yost.

But I can't believe he'd be that stupid.

by timlacy on Apr 3, 2008 10:07 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why is it fair?

Why is is fair that Cub pitchers can hit Brewers batters all series long, probably unintentionally, but if a brewer pitcher hits a cub, it's a beanball?

Ned Yost is a hothead, but there seems to be some hypocrisy in your statements.

by brewfan2 on Apr 3, 2008 9:56 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nobody said it's "fair."

In fact, Al's post questioned why Yost would want to nail any Cubs intentionally.

A new man...

I've had an epiphany that I must share with my BCB brethren.

It is April 3rd and two games in to the season and about 18 hours ago, I was on the verge of a complete Cubs-induced breakdown. I was making a complete ass of myself on yesterday's game thread, I'm pretty sure Sue and some others wanted to strangle me! I was even sent home from work for the day because no one wanted to be around me!

I believe a number of factors contributed to this extreme letdown including lack of sleep and personal stress, but I believe I have pin-pointed the exact reason for my problem. Last year got me so hungry for more, my lofty expectations for this season were about to boil over by opening day and anything less than a perfect start would be a letdown.

When the less-then-perfect start came to fruition, as did the onslaught of Brewers fans in my face about winning two in a row, I kinda snapped. The sky was most definitely falling.

But now that I've relaxed myself, I realize the sky is most definitely NOT falling. There's plenty of time left and perhaps I should "ration my passion" instead of placing it all on every pitch.

So, in a nutshell, I apologize to everyone who had to read my venomous tripe yesterday, you'll have one less negative whiner to deal with on gamedays...

Let's go out and get 'em today. I have a good feeling about Dempster.

by Great Odin's Raven on Apr 3, 2008 9:31 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I thought everyone...

...got over this type of behavior in 2004, after the expectations of the year before and the way the season ended? Sigh. I guess every new generation of Cubs fans have to deal with the taste-of-success phenomenon. Here's to getting over it ~early~ in the season. - TL

I agree

and when people throw out new ideas, I enjoy reading them. I may not agree with them or think they are realistic, BUT, I enjoy reading them. When Keystone proposed a balanced batting order placing power hitters throughout the lineup about every 2 batters, I actually liked the idea. Of course you're going to be pitched around... BUT putting runners on base isn't such a bad thing. I'm not advocating the lineup... but it is an interesting perspective.

It's like moneyball out in Oakland (although they don't adhere to it as much as people think). It was a wacko strategy that just happened to get the A's back into the thick of things with a mediocre payroll (at best). Who knows what the next idea will be?

by bap on Apr 3, 2008 12:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess the only way the Cubs could pull off that balanced order is if Zambrano or Maqruis were pitching. The hitters might get pitched around but marquis and Z can swing the bat.

Well, yesterday was painfull.

Fortunately, I couldn't watch it, but I subjected myself to listening to Pat and Ron all day.

Mistakes all over the place, that scream lack of concentration and half-hearted effort. Even some of the put-outs across the diamond were bad throws, where D-Lee got pulled off the bag and had to apply a tag.

Hopefully, Lou ripped them a new one and they come out wanting to win today. Would be interesting to see if Blanco gets the start today, after Soto's dismal performance behind the plate yesterday.

One thing we got going for us is that we're starting a righty (The Brewers absolutely destroy left-handed pitching... to the tune of .288 last year). However, that righty is Ryan Dempster, making his first start in quite some time.

I'll be at the park today, but the last time I saw De,mpster start (A few Aprils ago vs the Reds), the results were bad.

All I can say is Go Cubs Go! Let's get our 1st W!

Trevor Hoffman got lit up in the 9th for 4 to take the loss yesterday.

D Backs closer gave up walk off 3 run HR to take the loss yesterday vs. the Reds.

I don't think those teams think their season is over already. True, we all want the Cubs to get off to a great start, as ALL teams want to do. If today was August 1 and we're 10 games under and 12 games out, then worry. I agree, they look pretty lousy right now, but they'll get going.

Is Trevor Hoffman done, though?

He's getting old. He blew key saves in the pennant race last year. I wonder if the Padres are going to be hurting at closer by the end of this year.

Tony Gwynn Jr knocked him and the Padres out of it last year

That made for a great story, if anyone ever came across it on ESPN. As Tony Jr. grew up following around Trevor everyday in San Diego as a little kid... they were best buds. And Tony Jr. is still embraced by the San Diego owners, who treat him like their own son. That at-bat last year, was win-win and lose-lose for everyone in the Gwynn-San Diego family. .

Agreed

Yes, Trevor has seen better days and he is surely in the twilight of his great career. I was basically trying to say that the sky is not falling in SD, Phoenix, or Detroit, and it isn't here. I'm sure the Padres would like to get another stud closer, but he saved 42 of 49 opportunities last year, that's still not too shabby. Valverde for AZ was 47 of 54. For all the slamming fans did of Dempster, he was 28 of 31. Wood will probably (hopefully) be as successful this year. I have always been of the mindset that the games you win in April and May you don't have to win in September. That being said, two games in, if we win today, we'll be 1-2 and at the most 1 game out. with 159 to play. I still like our chances lol

The funny thing

is that he got the first 2 outs and was 1-2 on Cruz and gave up a teensy weensy walk. Then the Astros back with 2 more hits before Berkman's bomb. How typical that is to give up a walk in the 9th, even though there were 2 out already, and it comes back to nip your keister.

I agree on the teensy weensy walk

I threw that in there knowing how those burn you time after time. It's funny how everyone that watches baseball or has played at any level knows this, and yet the pitchers still nibble, unless their control is so off that game it doesn't matter. Giving the other team a gift baserunner is playing with fire at any time.

I mean... seriously.

A year ago, he starts off his new contract by running his Defensive Coordinator, QB Coach, and D-Line Coach out of town, because they don't see eye-to-eye.

Then, he demotes Alex Brown in favor of a pass rush specialist (Mark Anderson), and signs Adam friggin Archuletta.

By the end of the year, his former DC, and QB Coach are on their way to the post-season... Alex Brown is starting again (and making the defense a better unit for it), and Archuletta is riding the pine, just like he did in Washington.

Today's the day.

Bats have been in a coma (except for D-Lee, Dome, and one or two others) but today's the day we break out the lumber. And call me crazy, but I have a good feeling about Dempster today. I did not have a good feeling about Lilly yesterday (probably because of Vegas) and the first pitch of the game proved my suspicions correct. I think Dempster gets us on track today, along with the offense, Soriano included. Back in the leadoff spot today, I'm predicting two hits minimum. I'll be in Section 211 if anyone is around.

BRING YOUR BROOMS!

Also, Yost is going to plunk Lee or Fukudome in the 1st or 2nd inning and get the umps to warn both teams. Then when Lou retaliates he and Dumpster will both get suspended... I don't know if this is the best strategy, Cubs might do better without Dumpster pitching...

Dempster

I'm looking for a big game from Dempster. Think he's eager to show that he belongs as a starter coupled with the fact he wants to get the first Cubs win of the season.

...then again I expect a big day from Pie yesterday.

by Lou In Blue on Apr 3, 2008 12:13 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I second that emotion...

I thought Dempster looked alright in the spring training, and I actually feel better about him going today then I did about Lilly yesterday. Here's hoping.

by Great Odin's Raven on Apr 3, 2008 12:14 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, Demp actually has a HUGE opportunity here.

If he turns in a quality start and helps the Cubs stop the bleeding, he'll bolster his case in the court of public opinion regarding whether he deserves to be in the starting rotation. I know it's only one game, but doing so would be a pretty big feather in his cap (which is blue, by the way...red 'C" on it...perhaps you're familar?).

Veggie Fielder

Flies to Fukudome in right, the runner tags up and the throw comes in. Weeks bowls over Soto completely. The ball goes back to the wall, and Gwynn comes in. Dempster's "throw" to Soto sailed over his head into the infield.

2-0 Brewers

Clean, legal play

by Weeks, but Soto was just kind of standing in front of the baseline. Weeks could have run past him but....chose not to. He also kinda put his arms up.

Grounder

from Braun, 2 out. Apparently they're charging Fukudome with an error that allowed Gwynn to score. Kind of a tough call.

Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager

by northsider on Apr 3, 2008 1:29 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Boy, that is pretty crappy to charge Fukudome with an error on that. Soto can't catch it IF HE'S BEING SHOVED ONTO HIS ASS!

Replay: Weeks dropped his shoulder and used his elbow to push Soto down.

Brenly wondered aloud

if that was retribution for all the HBPs yesterday.

Hmm.

soto is a big boy

hard to imagine weeks leveling soto. im at work cant see the game

by Kchance on Apr 3, 2008 1:31 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Fookie's throw pulled Soto to the 3rd base side of the plate, and he was up the line and a little bit inside the stripe. Just as Weeks approached, Soto put his left leg down to "block" the line. It was at that point that Weeks just obliterated him.

Again, clean play, but Weeks could have simply ran past him if he wanted, Soto wasn't blocking the basepath that much. Was trying to make sure he didn't get the ball.

could it have something to do with the fact that last year he was fighting for the spot, whereas this year he is trying not to lose the spot?

I still dont get Lou's decision making Dempster a starter. I didn't trust the guy to go 1 inning let alone 6 or more.

Alfonso Soriano

leads off, runs the count to 2-0 before he sends a high fly ball to right down the line that Hart leaps for but it gets into the seats.

Fouled back strike 2. With a 2-2 count, Alfonso checked his swing on a Ohmanesque 40-foot curve that bounced to the catcher. Only to chase a low and away pitch he had no business swinging at. Strike 3. 1 out

That is, he laid off a crappy curve only to swing at an equally crappy pitch.
