Additional Notes on First Victory
Just a handful of things I'd like to hear people's thoughts on...
Capital 'A' for Awesome victory today. Some thoughts...
- First and foremost, the thing that has had me giddy like a school girl since the winter, Mr. Kosuke Fukudome, what a beast. Having an on-base guy on the team, a guy you know will 99% of the time make something out of his plate appearance, is really really refreshing. You heard it here first - Fuku for ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AND MVP.
- Now do people believe me that Dempster wil be solid this year? Been trying to say he has the stuff to be a solid starter and today that left-to-right sinking fastball was dirty. Love it.
- Another positive, Mr. Soto. This kid can rake. That sac fly probably woulda been a jack if it wasn't going into the teeth of the wind. But I think we all knew he could hit, here's to him keeping it up.
- The studs (Fonz, Lee, Aram) are heatin' up, gotta love it when one of them finally breaks out of their shell and carries the team for a week or so.
- One kind-of, sort-of negative from the game today, I'm sure nobody was as upset about Pie's bases loaded at-bat more then Pie. The fact that I (my first sport is ice hockey) knew every single thought process in his head during the at-bat made me think I could of struck him out. I'm pretty sure he went up there saying he was gonna hack at a first pitch fastball and he did so to one that was at the letters...finally goin back there to strike him out. This said, I know he'll come back from it, it was just a typical young-guy at the plate with bases loaded no outs trick.
Until tomorrow

Huh
You might want to let Dempster make...I don't know....2 starts before we talk about how solid he is. I want to be as positive as possible but to make judgments after three games...and one start is just plain silly.

And then put up a 4.94 ERA the next year
Just sayin...

The two years after that:
5.38 and 6.54 ERAs. As a starter.
Dempster's got exactly one good year as a starter under his belt.

Is it a crime to think
one of your own players are going to have a good year? Geez. He's also in the best shape of his career, a reincarnation if you will.

Not a crime...
but it probably isn't wise to go crowing about how great Dempster is after just one start. Despite his good stuff, Dempster has a long track record of mediocrity (or worse) as a starter. His stuff has never been the problem. It's been his consistency and his command.
Maybe he bucks his past this year and finds the consistency in command to take advantage of his good stuff. Or maybe he doesn't come back with the same command in future starts. Either way, it doesn't make much sense to proclaim yourself right after one start.

Greeney
from Mike & Mike in the Morning beat you to the FUKUMVP by a few hours. I wouldn't say Lee is heating up with an 0-5. Same with Ramirez, its just one hit.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.

i like a lot I saw in the game
but I havent seen any flashes of soriano hitting yet.....He's looked awful and the hit he got was just a pop up that fell in left field (good placement). And I'm still in shock that he walked! soriano will swing at everything!

Pie...
Yeah, that at-bat was brutal. But on the bright side, Pie is batting .273 (I know it's early) and I think the more AB's he'll get, the more he'll relax and just hit. I think he's playing really uptight/nervous right now. You're not seeing that usual smile and upbeat attitude from him yet.
