Fine victory

Now lets beat Milwaukee tomorrow afternoon and head to St. Louis on a high note. I’m officially worried about Bob Howry by the way.

It was amazing. Now let’s do it again tomorrow!

MY LIFE IS COMPLETE

Yes my life is complete. 3 pitches prior to the ending of the game I CAUGHT MY FIRST FOUL BALL EVER. Actually I caught the first rebound of my life. the ball bounced near me and right into my hands. WOW. Anyways….so you may know I live by so my goal was to get the ball signed by one of three guys….Wooody, Lee or Piniella…..Never saw Lee and Lou left with Sinatro by Woody was gracious enough to sing for many fans afterwards. Wood is an absolut class act and when talking to the security guys I got a handle on who was a good guy vs a bad guy. I wont go into the ‘bad’ guys but Woody is defenetly one of the good guys. And “i qoute’ there is a reason why Woody is one of the good guys…...PERIOD.

Black coat though, gray hoodie, white Oregon hat.

I Really Admire Wood

Wood is a team guy, who has had a good attitude through all of his injury problems. I am so glad he has been able to resurrect his career as a closer. Congrats on the foul ball!

by memphiscub on May 1, 2008 7:08 AM CDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

That's Awesome man. Congrats.

However, I wish Woody would sing for fans more often after the game. I bet he carries a nice tune. Kidding, but I also had a great time last night. My dad actually splits season tix w/ a co-worker w/ Sect. 438 Row 1 (3 last corner seats) and I was initially skeptical w/ Sect 527 tix but I came to the conclusion that there’s really not a bad seat at Wrigley (well almost) and so I thoroughly enjoyed all 9 innings. Saw the Fuk-U-Do-Meter sign for the first time and I could even see Al from across the way. Also saw Cuban chillin in his front row seats. All in all, a great night.

Great game!

OT, but on Cloud 9. My girlfriend, her sister, and I were celebrating my girlfriend’s birthday. We went over to the players lot in hopes of catching a glimpse of some players leaving. Not only a glimpse, but my girlfriend was able to get Reed Johnson, Rich Hill, Matt Murton, and our personal favorite Kerry Wood. Kerry even paused for a photo with my gf.

What a great group of guys on this year’s team. This solidified it for me. Our deepest gratitude to Reed, Rich, Matty, and Kerry for taking the time out to sign a few autographs.

Hoping this high doesn’t end!!!

Hammer, CONGRATS!!! Great night all around!!!! GO CUBS GO!!!!!!!!!

No, my girlfriend had players signing her Cubs hat. She was, however, VERY excited.

Did you by chance have a dark hat and fleece on? Think you may have come up a little after Kerry came out. I think I heard someone say “Have him sign the ball.” Not stalking BTW…

What can we draw from this victory?

Geovany Soto is a slugger. Yes, he may have his 3 (or 5) strike out games, but he is my biggest suprise of the season. He is legit and will be an all-star catcher in the years to come. I’m running through previous Cubs catchers in my mind and I cant think of one who measures up to him offensively. This is the best praise you can give a young player. Legit! Marmol is legit and that is great.

by smitster2008 on May 1, 2008 12:06 AM CDT reply reply   0 recs

I've run through a bunch of catchers (all teams, not just Cubs) in my mind and the one that keeps coming up is...

Mike Piazza. Not saying Soto will be as good of a hitter as Piazza, but the potential seems to be there, both in power and in average. Biggest difference I can see right now is Piazza had power to all fields, especially right-center. Soto seems to be a dead-pull hitter, tonight’s second homer notwithstanding. Not sure that’s a problem, but if it is, the nice thing is, it’s a area that can be worked on and improved. And it’s probably safe to say, Soto brings a better defensive toolkit to the table than Piazza.

The beauty here is that Soto can mature as a major-leaguer surrounded by the likes of DLee, ARam, Soriano, Fukudome, DeRosa – all very good hitters. So there is no pressure on him to be “the man” right now. All he needs to do is handle the pitchers and block the plate. Any offense is gravy. Having said that, let me also say it’s time to start roasting the turkeys my friends, ‘cause there’s going to be lots of gravy this year… ;-)

Yep, as evidenced last night

That late inning meaningless homer by Milwaukee’s backup catcher, Rivera? Yep, right down the line, over the short section of the bleachers, and out on to Waveland. I’m waiting to see if Al makes mention of it in the recap – I imagine he had a pretty good view of it. I did too – from my couch! For six innings I froze my butt off out there, and when Yost took out Fielder and Braun in the top of the inning, and Lou removed Lee and Ramirez, I figured that’s it – nothing on the street tonight. So I went home. Stupid, stupid, stupid…

Make sure you mention it's all because of Hector

I don’t think Hector Villanueva ever put one out on to Waveland during a game, but he always was good to us during batting practice. After awhile, I just started to notice that everything he hit out was almost always over the old family section area. So I made a mental note to myself “Hector always pulls”. Then I got to thinking about other catchers in the league, past and present, especially those that I’ve been able to witness firsthand their power tendencies, and I amended my mental note to “catchers always pull.”

I actually said that to the other ballhawks that day when Mitch Lyden was announced as a hitter for the Marlins in 1993. We all looked at each other – who’s this guy? Then I heard them say on the radio that he was their backup catcher, just called up, and it was his first major league at-bat. So I said “catchers always pull” and started towards the line. Sure enough, he cracked the second (I think) pitch out onto Waveland, right down the line, I got it, and that’s when I got to go into the visitors clubhouse and see Charlie Hough riding the exercise bike while smoking and eating a doughnut.

You can’t make this stuff up! ;-)

What a game! Al, it was nice seeing you. I’m sorry I couldnt stay long, I was with a group of people who actually got kicked out in the bottom of the 7th/top of the 8th for being “out of control”. Kind of an overreaction by the security guy but that’s allright. It was a blowout of epic proportions by then.

Who would have thought

Ryan Dempster would be 4-0, with a 3.16 era in 6 starts this April? Dempster is walking too many people still like he always has(19 walks in 6 starts), but the major difference in his success is he has been much tougher to hit this season.(just like Zambrano the last few years even though he lead the league in walks) Dempster has given up a total of 22 hits all year and teams are only hitting 172 off him. Why has he all of the sudden became so tough to hit? Is it the cold weather? Has he improved one of his pitches, compared to years past? Is it his funky delivery? Or is he just getting lucky?

In 99 teams hit 262 off him, in 2000 teams hit 243 off him, in 2001 teams hit 269 off him, in 2002 teams hit 286 off him and in 2003 teams hit 293 off him. So in Dempsters one good season, hitters only hit 243 off him. So if Dempster can keep teams hitting 240-250, and not give up too many HR. It’s possible that he could keep pitching well and put up number 2 or number 3 starters numbers this year.

your a better man than I am...

I was there, but I left after the 6th inning. It was so cold….and with the wind blowing straight in on my, I could not take it any longer. It was a very long game. It was 9:30 when I left. Even with my long commute home, the game was still going on when I got home. But I guess that happens when you score 19 runs.

Interesting. How could we possibly know if the other potential buyers will turn in to Jerry Jones types as well? With so much ego and money involved, I’d probably rather have a Mark Cuban than a Peter Angelos.

The ESPN

guys wouldn’t shut up about Cuban, they even interviewed him, but my DVR freaked out on my so I wasn’t able to hear the interview.

I can’t decide yet if I want Cuban as the owner of the Cubs. He definitely brings the desire to win and isn’t afraid to spend money to do it. But he brings his ego and personality with him. I would be afraid that he would try and one up Hank Steinbrenner all the time and keep saying really stupid things. I think I would rather have one of the groups with Chicago ties owning the team who would be more likely to let the GM do his job.

... to wrap up his Apr – very 1st month in MLB.

Dome said “I could have add some more RBIs, but I’d say that’s the way it is… it’s too hard to figure out the pitches in majors within a month…still fumbling my way against them. Next month? I will just do what I can do to contribute my team….”

That is awesome. He may not hit for much power, but he reminds me of an outfielder version of Mark Grace with more speed.

What a wonderful signing. I wish more major leaguers could take his style of play as an example of how to approach the plate and how to defend his position.

Well...

not exactly, though that was deinitely my sentiment last night. Do you know more specifically why a sold out game would be blacked out? Were there other media outlets broadcasting the game? Our mediacom broadcasts usually even show CSN+ games on an alternate channel, but last night the mediacom customer service ran a voicemail refering to the MLB blackout policy, but w/ no explanation. I’m just curious, and wondering how many more times it will happen this season.

by Slakkr on May 1, 2008 10:17 AM CDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

It has nothing to do with sellouts.

It has to do with MLB rules protecting broadcast “territories”—rules that were set up thirty years ago and are 100% irrelevant today.

I wrote about this here a couple weeks ago—search the site. These rules may finally be changed later this year. We await developments.

by Slakkr on May 1, 2008 12:11 PM CDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

To clarify.

The “sellout: no local blackout” rule is from the NFL. It does not apply to MLB. As Al said, the stupid MLB blackout rules are based on dividing the country in portions that are each club’s territories. The games are blacked out to protect the local broadcasters, as well as MLB’s and the teams’ revenues under the assumption that the team and MLB sold the rights to a local TV station, although that is not always the case. Thus, even if no local station is broadcasting the game, the area is blacked out nonetheless. Stupid, indeed.
