How dare anyone attack the sacred cows

I'm not going to instigate.   Nope.   Instead I'm going to open this subject up for debate and remove myself.

....sacred cows of recent memory....

1.  Michael Barrett...two years ago nobody dare take objection to Barrett's defense behind the plate or ability to work with a pitching staff

2.  Alfonso Soriano...how dare anybody (to include apparently Barry Rozner) take objection of this magnificent 5 tool superstar who puts up sexy personal statistics

3.   Felix Pie....saying he will never hit his way out of a paper bag in this league ranks up there with claiming Ron Santo's toupee looks bad....you just don't do it, because after all Pie is a burgeoning superstar that Sweet Lou is too stupid to know how to develop and use properly

4.  Kerry Wood...critiquing Wood ranks up there with stealing one of Ron Santo's legs when he isn't looking...we couldn't be critical when he famously imploded and was inconsistent as a starter, we couldn't be critical when he laid waste on the DL for a very, very long time, and now we can't be critical when he clearly lacks the cahoonies and moxy to be a 9th inning closer

No you're not instigating

You’re being a douchebag. Huge difference!

You’re actually gloating about a Cubs loss, because a few Cubs having a bad day supports your godawful, ignorant and inane opinions about baseball.

Just when it seems you couldn’t be any more of a sad cartoon, you hit yourself over the head with a giant green hammer and shit your pants.

I care about one thing...a World Series Championship

Anything that gets in the way of that vision is something I shall call into question. Diehard Cub fans (like myself) have earned that right. What I’m learning is that too many people on this blog think about the Cubbies in fantasy league terms. It explains why there is huge biased love for the aforementioned “sacred cows.”

Tell you what…I’m going to gripe about things on this ballclub that don’t make me happy. There are very many things that do make me happy, as a review of my brief posting history will amply illustrate.

by MDBNIU on May 1, 2008 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Well said MD

I’ve been saying this for awhile now-there are way too many people on this site who go on the attack whenever any criticism is levelled on the Cubs.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again; “we can criticize bad play…terrible, gut wrenching losses and still be diehard Cubs fans’. Does anybody really think that if we didn’t live and die with this team we’d be getting this upset?

by bluekoolaide on May 1, 2008 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions

That's BS.

Your posting history goes back at least a couple of years. You can deny being BlueMike all you want but your negative attitude, hatred of certain players and use of certain phrases say otherwise.

by sue369 on May 1, 2008 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about

I didn’t even know about this site until last year and didn’t post for the first time until a month or so ago.
I can’t even tell you how maddening it is being accused of being somebody i’ve never even heard of and being accused of saying things, etc. that I haven’t said.
But maybe that’s your way of dealing with anybody who disagrees with you-just make up things about them.

Gripe Away!

I rarely agree with your conclusions, but I don’t have any problem with you expressing them.

Do you really think Lou is too stupid to develop or use Pie properly?

Do you really think Wood lacks the “moxy” to be a closer?

What are “cahoonies”?

What do you think we could get for Santo’s legs on EBay?

Ron Santo’s toupee is horrible- there, I said it!

This isn't about sacred cows

This isn’t about Cubs fans covering their ears out of hero worship.

Or refusing to listen to valid arguments out of blind stupid loyalty to their team.

This is, and this is my 100% honest opinion, entirely about you having no fucking idea what you’re talking about. Plain and simple.

You have a warped, incomplete, and broken understanding of baseball that permeates through every single ignorant opinion that you post on this site that everyone – everyone – dislikes you openly not because you’re some harbinger of hard truths we can’t face, but because you’re a broken sad sack of wrong.

I could get into specifics here – about how Soriano’s contract, while overpriced is not without value, how Wood has been a solid closer this season and there’s a ton of stats to show that, or how experts too numerous to enumerate have faith that Pie will eventually develop into a quality major league player, but you and I both know it wouldn’t matter. Not one bit. Because whenever you are confronted with a solid argument against the idiotic vitriol that pours out of your mouth like vomit from a drunken frat boy you simply disappear, only to hit and run another thread with your gleaming insight.

Extremely loud, sustained applause.

And let the record show that while I usually wouldn’t be too fond of someone saying “you having no fucking idea what you’re talking about”, in this case it is 100% appropriate.

You have NEVER… EVER… made a positive post here. I don’t know what you said or did when you were blue-mike, but since you showed up after the move, EVERYTHING you’ve said has been negative. A brief review of your posting history will AMPLY illustrate THAT.

If that’s the case, WHY ARE YOU ROOTING FOR THE CUBS? Who roots for a team they’re CONSTANTLY negative about? How does that even work???

Let's go ahead and clear the boards here.

Ample enough time has been spent attacking the points you make, critiquing your thinking and offering alternative analysis. And all of it has left no mark – you are untouched through it all, timeless and inviolate. So let’s try a different tactic for just a moment as see where it gets us.

You keep repeating the same things over and over again, based on nothing more than your personal feelings about them. You’ve never once argued that Soriano’s on field production – his “personal statistics,” as you so disparagingly call them – don’t merit his salary. You’ve never once argued that Soriano’s high salary is an opportunity cost for the team, either now or down the road. There are interesting debates that reasonable people can have on those subjects, but you’ve never been a party to one – the only fact that matters to you, and the only fact you seem to know, is that you are personally offended by the fact that Soriano makes that much money.

Or with Kerry Wood – no discussion of anything as pedestrian as save percentage or appearances all the way up through the really fun stuff like run expectancy and reliever leverage scores would ever make a dent with you. A long time ago you diagnosed a torn rotator cuff and a ligament strain as a psychological condition – good luck getting that recognized by the DSM, by the way – and there is no chance of persuading you otherwise.

Because nothing matters to you but your own opinion. And you seem to entirely base your opinion on your personal feelings. And any time your opinions are challenged, you take it as a personal affront. Well guess what – all you have to offer is yourself. You have never once presented an argument that had its basis in an external fact, whether it be statistical, historical or even a statement from a figure of authority. For all the times you’ve talked about what Lou thinks you’ve never bothered to actually quote Lou Piniella – all you really mean is that MDBNIU thinks that, and that you think Lou agrees with you on the basis that you’re always right.

So please spare us the martyr’s routine; it is nobody’s fault but your own that you are so personally invested in whether or not a large amount of strangers on the Internet share your disgust over the fact that Soriano strikes out a lot. It is seriously your own problem, for you to deal with on your own. None of us has the power to remove Soriano from this franchise, and you would have a lot better luck selling sand to Arabs than you would convincing a large amount of people that someone with “personal statistics,” in your absurd little argot, as good as Soriano’s is hurting the ballclub by wearing some eyeblack and some shiny earrings. Of course, you know that, because you’ve been trying for years to do it.

And since you have proven to be vaingloriously incapable of understanding a single thing that is said to you, I am going to go ahead and break this down for you Tinker-Toy style, just so you cannot come back later and claim that some finer point of this wasn’t clear enough.

You know nothing.

You insist upon repeating this ignorance repeatedly, without variation or originality.

You lack any and all respect for the opinions of anyone else, and so you have never, ever given anyone a reason to respect you.

You do not matter.

You never have.

You never will.

Now pick up your toys and go home. You’re not wanted here.

Actually, what you've done is the very definition of "instigating"...

Back in the Bronx Zoo days, Graig Nettles’ nickname was “Puff”. Somebody asked Gossage one time how that nickname came about. Gossage said something to the effect of… “Look at him. Just sitting in the clubhouse, keeping to himself. Then he goes and says something about somebody to somebody else, or he hides something, or he leaves an article out in someone’s locker… Then as soon as somebody gets pissed off and the fireworks start – PUFF! He’s gone like a puff of smoke – nowhere to be found.”

Puff away, MDB, puff away…

My two cents.

Are you really a Cubs fan MBD? The way you present your thoughts and theories is beyond pessimistic and loathing. I bet there isn’t one person on this blog that hasn’t been extremely pissed with a player or two because they are lacking talent in one area or another or are just having a bad week or even month. The difference is in how that frustration is vented. Even if you came up with something insightful, it would be blown off at this point because it came from you. You need to get a new spiel buddy.

Geovany Soto you're my Hero

by love the ivy on May 2, 2008 4:09 AM CDT reply actions

This is stupid

1) Pretty much everyone understood Barrett sucked defensively
2) Soriano is the furthest thing from a sacred cow on the team. Rather he’s a punching bag for dopes like you who need to find blame for each and every one of the 70-75 games the Cubs are going to lose this year
3) Pie has been fair game all season – at least half the people around here don’t want him starting, so what are you talking about?
4) KWood- he certainly has built up the most goodwill of anyone on the team, but that didn’t stop him from getting booed by the Cubs “faithfull” yesterday.

Why do you have to start a fanpost where you are wrong four ways? Because you are a troll.

by gary varsho on May 2, 2008 6:40 AM CDT reply actions

Point proved

People stumbling on themselves to say thou shalt not critique and point out the problems. Kerry Wood has blown 3 out of 7 save opportunities, yet there are multiple references to his solid save % and effectiveness. Who is doing the skewing??

I said in spring training that Ryan Dempster was poised to win 15 games. But nope, the majority on this blog screamed bloody murder and said how dare Lou Piniella put him in the rotation.

I’ve said for two years in a row how valuable Mark DeRosa is to this ballclub. But nope, the majority on this blog labeled him as an aging utility ballplayer that had no business starting everyday and should be replaced by Brian Roberts, Eric Patterson, Mike Fontenot.

So I’m going to take objection with the sabermetrician and Comic Book Store Guy clones from the Simpsons when it comes to my track record of being critical versus being credible.

And Al, I shall direct one criticism your way. Why do you shy away from the unpopular when things go wrong with this ballclub? Your late evening write up of yesterday’s implosion was not objective. In fact, you were virtually apologetic for Kerry Wood and Alfonso Soriano. That’s not an attack, rather a comment. If you demand that all subjectiveness be taken out of the equation, then I think good policy would be for you to honor that policy as well. 95% of the time your reporting is strong and accurate. The other 5% all manner of objectivity is thrown out the window.

by MDBNIU on May 2, 2008 8:43 AM CDT reply actions

And now you're wrong about your own intentions.

To wit: Instead I’m going to open this subject up for debate and remove myself

And yet you’ve done nothing but ride your hobby horse around this thread and play the victim. Please, for our sake, and for the sake of consistency, do as you promised and remove yourself.

by Wreckard on May 2, 2008 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

define "majority"

and I guarantee you, the items that you said reached a “majority” with this blog do NOT meet that definition. There’s probably several hundred readers; maybe 150 comment regularly, and 75 write fan-posts. No way was there a majority of people who screamed you down over Demp or DeRosa—in fact, I’d say the opinions expressed on the B-Ro/D-Ro (hey, I just noticed that) “controversy” were pretty much split down the middle. And I’d suggest that Ryan Dempster has surprised a LOT of people.

Kerry Wood has been better more than he’s been worse. If he’s blown 3 of 7, that means he HASN’T blown 4 of 7. It’s not enough of a run to say “he can’t do it.” It IS enough of a run to say “he needs to figure this out soon, or he’s going to lose the role”. And while your favorite windmill to tilt at is Al’s supposed subjectiveness, I’ve seen Al post three times in the past 24 hours about how Kerry needs to shape up, or he’ll lose his role as closer.

It’s not a matter of credible. You’re not always wrong. But you’re also not always right, and your attitude that anyone who disagrees with you is somehow a bottom-feeding baseball moron REALLY pisses a lot of people off.

Sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about

Soriano a sacred cow? There were people here who wanted him to remain hurt and on the DL. He catches a lot of flak.

Just because everyone doesn’t repeat your mantra incessantly….He’s overpaid….He’s a guess hitter…He wears eyeblack….doesn’t mean that he’s sacred cow.

What it means is that people are tired of your broken record and the joy you take in Cub losses so you can say I told you so.
