This would, remarkably, be the 8th time in the last 9 games the Cubs have scored 3 runs or less. That is abysmal. We’ve got some solid moving parts up and down the lineup but it ain’t working.

by Jayo525 on May 10, 2008 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I believe that "USELESS" was in reference to his baserunning in particular.
Ignoring the fact that it’s Theriot for just a moment, giving away outs frustrates me to no end – it’s one thing to make an out ate the plate, another thing to make outs on the bases; you can choose not to run, and the INTENTIONAL risking of outs for so little reward bothers me.
But that’s completely irrelevant to this, at least in my mind – I was simply noting that technically no RBI was awarded due to the error. I don’t really CARE – I’ve many times referred to the distinction between earned and unearned runs as meaningless and arbitrary.
by cwyers on May 10, 2008 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm a pedant, what can I say.
Theriot was only credited with one RBI. I don’t like measuring players with RBIs, particularly, but the scorer ended up awarding an error on the play, so there it is. I didn’t think that clarifying the decision of the official scorer was “hate.”
by cwyers on May 10, 2008 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs

We’ll need him in Sept and Oct…today is a waste of his golden arm.
Soriano should hit 5th. Period.

Marmol can use the work
He’s pitched only once this week. Plus, if he’s going to give up some runs, I’d rather see it now than in a one-run game sometime.

Just ran the figures.Reed Johnson, 2008 (including today):
Reed Johnson, 2008 (including today):
Overall: .257/.349/.295, .644 OPS, 71 OPS+
HBP removed: .257/.304/.295, .599 OPS, 58 OPS+
I removed HBP from both his TOB and his PAs, as if those PAs never happened. Obviously that isn’t fair; Johnson has a talent for being HBP. I was just curious as to HOW much of his value was coming from HBP. It’s an awful lot.
by cwyers on May 10, 2008 5:49 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think at this point...
...you’re preaching to the choir, cwyers. I’m assuming you’re arguing against Reed and for Felix? Seems like there’s nothing left to do but let Lou decide.
However, as Al recently posted, there has been something special about Reed – maybe it’s just That Catch – but maybe not. I don’t want to see Felix held back any longer, though…

If I was going down that road I'd use platoon splits.
I was just honestly curious about how much of his value derived from HBP. It amazes he how often he’s getting hit this season. I can hardly believe it.
I know these LOOK like baseball stats, but in this case they’re simply trivia – for entertainment value only. Looking at Reed Johnson’s hitting without his HBP doesn’t have a lot of predictive value, it’s just interesting to me.

the Brewers will release “Gag-me” by July 4th. I said it the day they signed him (I had the conversation with a guy in my office who is a huge Red Sox fan, obviously he was happy to be rid of Gag-me). What a joke of a contract that was. We shall see…

I think the Brewers are trying a new
method of hiding the ‘roids. The Brewers are feeding them to pigs, turning the pigs into bratwurst and feeding the bratwurst to the players. It doesn’t seem to be working yet… That had to be the only way they could justify that contract to Gag-me.
