Here's a shocker- Prior experiencing discomfort
Same old story for 'The Employee.' I don't ever wish anyone to be injured but after Prior's falling out, I can't say I'm too upset. For those of you who thought we missed out by not holding on to him for longer, this should change your mind.
Its almost comical how often he gets hurt, the guy could have really been something spectacular. Looks like Shawn Estes doesn't have to worry about Mark stealing his gig for a while (although I'm sure his terrible pitching will take care of that).

You beat me by 5 minutes
I wrote another post about this, but then deleted it when I saw this one…
I truly wonder if this “discomfort” is psychological. There doesn’t seem to be anything mechanically wrong with him. I think he ought to go spend some quality time with a sports psychologist, because I think the biggest issue facing the Employee is between his ears.

agree
I am eternally grateful for what Prior did in 03. However, since that time, he’s lived like the world (especially the Cubs prior to this year) owes him for what he did. He did his job, and he did it good…. like he was supposed to do. I do think he’s had some physical arm problems, and that he’ll never have the stuff he did that year. I do think though that he needs some mental toughness, and that includes growing up. The way he acted the last year or so with the Cubs just shows he is a child in the head… because of that, he might not ever have a full season in MLB. In the article, it said he had some discomfort in April, but it must have been nothing because he got back out there soon after and went back to work. Sorry Padres… I dont think Prior is going to grow up, and youll be lucky to get some relief duties out of him anytime in the next 5 years.

With the Cubs luck...
he’ll end up coming back and being the ace of the Padres.

I think Prior's luck may be worse than the Cubs'

Truly feel bad for the guy
It has been one thing after another. I always point to the collision with Giles in ‘03 as the beginning of the end. Thought he sounded a little less spiteful towards Chicago in Spring.
I was talking to a friend of mine who is a Twins fan the other day and mentioned how excited I was when they drafted Morneau instead of Prior. Hindsight is always 20-20 I guess…
Way back... outta here!!!

Not really.
I watched Mauer play in two different sports state titles in high school. Being from Minnesota, he’s a special breed. Mauer:
-Was the Gatorade Player of the Year…in FOOTBALL.
-Was All-State in basketball @ Cretin-Derham Hall (Paul Molitor also went there)
—Turned down a full ride to Florida State in football…
And, the biggest f-ing surprise of all…struck out ONCE in high school.
So, no, Morneau and Mauer, Canada and Minnesota, not really one in the same.

It was a joke
I live in Minnesota, so it was really just poking fun at myself. I actually go to school at the same place his brother, Jake, went to school. Good player himself, actually got to interview him for the school’s paper about him being inducted into the school’s sports hall of fame.

St. Paul
going to St. Thomas.
Quick baseball fact about UST, their baseball coach, Dennis Denning, is an incredible coach, probably one of the best college coach in the country at any level. He use to coach at Cretin-Derham Hall before becoming a Tommie and at one time or another, either through his coaching clinics or coaching the team, coached Molitor, both Mauer brothers (Jake is now coaching the Twins rookie team), and former Heismann winner Charlie Ward.
I only know this cause I wrote a profile on coach Denning for the school’s newspaper.

won a national championship here in 2001
first ever for St. Thomas. Plus, they’ve won their division something like 9 years in a row or something. All thanks to him.
Also, CDH was only what it was because of Denning, he built that program from the ground up.

Yeah, that one stunned me, too.
And guess what? We’ll be able to see this for ourselves at Wrigley in June when the Orioles come in, unless he’s played himself out of a job by then.

Yes, he will.
Unless the Orioles trade him to another team before June 24.
FWIW, Roberts left yesterday’s game with “a foot injury”.

What a surprise...
...the employee has discomfort.
It’s been all down hill since the end of 03, and the valley is coming up on him quickly.

it's always a nice story when
a guy battles back from serious injury and has sucess. But…......in this case I can’t say I feel too bad for him. Selfishly,I would absolutely hate for him to come back and be good again. Soon…...he’ll no longer be an employee….......just a memory….....and a patient.

This has to be....
A psychological thing. He’s had the best doctors working with him for years, the best surgery, rehab, throwing programs, etc. I would think all pitchers experience discomfort from time to time, I mean you’re throwing a ball 90+mph a few hundred times a month. I wish him the best, but I think it’s time to give the pen a shot.

So where are all the people
who were upset with Hendry for letting him go? I remember a few posts about how he would be available for the stretch run.
by rlpete on May 11, 2008 8:20 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Maybe they're hanging out with Phil Rogers.
I still remember a couple of years ago when he wrote that the Cubs would be better off trading Zambrano and keeping Prior. His logic was that Zambrano was “probably going to hurt his arm”. I never much liked Rogers before, but his delusional backing of Prior was proof enough to me that the Trib’s baseball expert was an idiot.
by bluekoolaide on May 11, 2008 8:32 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was best
for both the Cubs and for Prior that he turned down Hendry’s offer of a two year commitment. Both sides needed to move on.
That said, I’ll be surprised if he throws a pitch for the Padres this year.

I wonder if
the level of discomfort he is feeling in his arm is directly proportional to the number of losses the Padres have amassed in the standings. If they were contending, would he be playing minor league games by now?
