Renyel Pinto and his 0.73 ERA

Man... I was pissed off when we traded Pinto in that Juan Pierre deal... and now I'm pissed off even more. We were developing a young lefty with good stuff, who can get guys out... and we dealt him in a package that has basically netted us nothing!

Let's look back at this deal yet again. We didn't land Furcal in the FA market, and grew desperate for a leadoff man. So, we dealt 3 young arms to the Marlins (known for their excellent scouting), and in return got a "toy baseball player" in the last year of his contract to play CF and leadoff. Not only that, but we also "cock-blocked" our top position prospect at the time, a CF named Felix Pie, with that move.

Then, as the season started sour... and grew worse by the deadline, we didn't even move Pierre... who was attracting interest by contenders. And, instead, we watched him walk away for nothing at the end of the season, signing elsewhere... and getting no compensation in return, with the exception of the draft pick awarded to us by MLB... which will probably go to waste on a bad pick anyway.

Man... am I pissed about this! Anyone else feel like I do?

Win some...

... lose some.

Of the pitchers the Cubs sent Mitre, Pinto & Nolasco, at this point only Pinto is doing something at the moment.

What happened to Mitre though?

by DrCrawdad on May 11, 2008 10:06 PM CDT   0 recs

Mitre's been DL'ed for some time.

IIRC, he’s had both shoulder and elbow problems.

No, I don't

Selective hindsight and reliving old trades usually only raises the blood pressure.

I have no response to that.

by stelmodad on May 11, 2008 10:07 PM CDT   0 recs

Nope

There is no way to know if he would have been able to achieve this in the Cubs organization. It is foolish to get upset about this.

by Ross on May 11, 2008 10:39 PM CDT   0 recs

He hasn't achieved anything yet.

Lots of guys start out looking great-remember Jon Koronka with Texas last year? Just like it’s not fair to judge a player negatively after a month or two, it’s also silly to hail them as the next big thing just because of some early success.
Also, as Ross mentioned above, the Cubs record of developing pitching talent has never been exactly lights out.

I remember Pinto

in spring training a couple (three?) years ago. He pitched in a couple (three or four?) major league games and threw heat. He looked like a young Zambrano.

by Clark Addison on May 11, 2008 11:16 PM CDT   0 recs

I remember...

giving up Bobby Hill in some trade that netted us close to nothing. It makes me feel like shit when I hear that’s he’s almost dominating an independent league right now.

It’s fun to think about what might have been (how about a rotation of a healthy Wood, healthy Prior, Big Z, and Dontrelle before he went south) but there ain’t a thing to be done about it. Some deals come out great, some don’t.

As you’ve stated, this was a bad deal mostly because of JP’s failure rather than Pinto’s success. Oh well.

It happens

Good for Renyel Pinto. Can’t hardly fault Jim Hendry for the trade at the time.

I'm going to agree with sackman

That trade drove me nuts when it happened and the Cubs absolutely ham-handled the situation by not trading him to a contender (they were 43-62 on July 31). You have to remember that it wasn’t just Pinto; it was Nolasco and Mitre. Granted, we were supposed to be DEEP in SP at both the minor and major league levels at the time (no need to pick at scabs, so I won’t name names) but when the trade was made, Pinto was the No. 6 prospect in the system according to Baseball America, Nolasco was No. 19 and Mitre had appeared in 35 games for us with 18 starts. The next year, Nolasco was the Marlins’ No. 8 prospect and Pinto was No. 13. In return, we got one year out of a singles hitter with a noodle arm (although he did have a career high 48 XBH for us) Still, it was a brutal trade the day it happened and it’s a brutal trade in hindsight. I don’t blame Sackman for venting here. Pinto was always going to be a stud and Nolasco should be OK as well.

by rob9802 on May 12, 2008 12:03 AM CDT   0 recs

Pinto a "stud"?

He’s a situational middle reliever; I don’t expect him to have an ERA under 1 all year. Do you? Chad Qualls of the D’backs had a 0.93 ERA (granted, he’d given up six unearned runs) before yesterday.

Ricky Nolasco is 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA so far this season and has a 4.99 career ERA and 1.44 career WHIP. If he were doing that with the Cubs, you’d probably be asking for him to be DFA’d.

The trade wasn’t a good one, but as Josh77 points out below, the Cubs got a draft pick when Pierre left that turned out to be Josh Donaldson. In 2-3 years that could look really good.

Absolutely a stud

By calling him a situational middle reliever, you’re either a.) being redundant (aren’t all middle relievers situational?) or b.) not doing him justice. From Baseball Prospectus: “Man do the Marlins have the makings of a nasty bullpen in 2008. Pinto was often used to get out of jams last year, inheriting runners in 40 percent of his appearances and stranding 30 of the 38 he inherited.” Working out of jams is a pretty difficult “situation,” no? If by situational, you mean a left-handed specialist, you’d be incorrect. He faces righties more than lefties by more than 2:1 (78.1 career IP to 35.2) and is just as on the right-handers (.203 and .201 career BAA, respectively). That’s certainly better than Scott Eyre or Carmen Pignatiello.
As far as Nolasco, the jury’s out on him until he gets a full year under his belt. He was respectable as a 23-year-old rookie in 2006 (4.82 ERA, 11-11 in 35 games including 22 starts) but was sidelined most of last year with elbow inflammation (or so we’re told; I suspect something worse, but then again, I’m no doctor.). This is a big year for him, but at 25, he’s three years younger than Rich Hill, so again, the jury is still out (when Rich Hill was 25, he was 0-2 in his career with a 9.13 ERA; obviously, he’s improved since.)
As far as Donaldson, I acknowledge the point about the compensatory draft pick, but they chose a catcher who can’t catch. If he forgets to hit (which Cubs prospects seem to do a lot of these days—calling you, Ryan Harvey and Brian Dopirak), he’s worthless. Small sample size, but it looks like it’s already happening.

by rob9802 on May 12, 2008 11:51 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nolasco

was reportedly one start away from being dropped from the rotation but he had a good start last time out against the Nationals to save his spot in the rotation. The schedule worked out in his favor this time.

So far, he hasn’t looked good at all this year.

Yeah

That trade has decimated our franchise. If we only had something positive to think about.

How many times

do I have to say—that trade did not get us “nothing.” It netted us a draft pick that became Josh Donaldson, who is our #7 prospect according to Baseball America.

Donaldson for Pinto is a pretty fair trade.

not sure

how that deal c**k blocked Pie way back in 04? He was like 12 then. I think most, including myself were happy to get JP…......we did not know how bad he is until we got to see him everyday. It’s over…......forget that tade and let’s worry about winning it all THIS YEAR. Most of hendrys trades have been ok…...this will happen when trying to win…prospects get traded for veteran guys in an effort to get immediate results…......part of baseball man

by plenz on May 12, 2008 6:07 AM CDT   0 recs

That Pierre move did block Pie. It was '06

Pie was our top prospect… and we brought in a CF in the last year of his contract… with no plans of re-signing him, because of Pie.

So, we dealt 3 young arms for a guy we didn’t plan on keeping anyway… and let him walk away for nothing but a compensitory draft pick (

I don't know why you say

“Nothing but a compensatory draft pick.”

Compensatory draft picks are valuable. Even if you don’t like Josh Donaldson, compensatory picks in the last five seasons include Joba Chamberlain, Huston Street, Clay Buchholz, Matt Murton, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Adam Jones and some guys who are still top prospects (with lots of trade value) like Jed Lowrie.

We traded a middle reliever/set-up guy, an area where we have a lot of depth, for a draft pick that may or may not pan out. Sounds like a decent trade to me. Even if we end up on the short end, it’s not the dumb move that you make it out to be. It’s a smart use of resources.

Still, we didn’t really give up anything to get him as Choi never became anything.

dump one would hope you would get a bit of talent back. Are any of the players they got in that deal still around?

Hey, SackMan...

...I can’t help noticing you posted this well after the Cubs completed a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Now, I’m not saying this isn’t a topic worty of some (limited) discussion, but, y’know, there’s a time to microanalyze every move Jim Hendry has and hasn’t made, and there’s a time to celebrate and make the most of an opportunity to feel really good about this Cubs team. I think you might have misjudged in this case.

Nanika Ga Okoru!

Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.

by dat cubfan daver on May 12, 2008 9:43 AM CDT   0 recs

Actually ...

When things are going bad, we tend to pile on unnecessarily and when things are going good, we drink the Kool-Aid a bit too much. I say talk about anything at any time; Sackman has a valid beef with a bad trade. Has Hendry done more good than bad? I’d certainly say so; but even he would admit this wasn’t a proud moment for him.

by rob9802 on May 12, 2008 11:55 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I guess. I just think the timing is a bit odd.

by dat cubfan daver on May 12, 2008 11:58 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

True but

he’s still a middle reliever. If this is the worst trade Hendry ever makes, I can easily live with that. Kevin Hart for Freddie Bynum may eventually negate this trade anyway.

by rlpete on May 12, 2008 2:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't get me wrong. I'm ecstatic about the sweep!

It’s just that with the Marlins in 1st place, they caught my attention… and I saw was Pinto was doing. That was the worst deal we’ve made in a long time…

Wouldn’t you love to have Pinto in our pen right now? Instead of Eyre, Piggy, or Marshall?

I agree

with the part of a situational reliever. How many innings has he thrown? Will he be a closer?. I personally at the time was bent on giving up Nolasco, how wrong I was.
Now if Pinto starts closing in the future and racks up 35-38 saves a year, give me a call, but for now can’t get to burned on the this trade, just Pierre was weak. Pierre fooled the Cubs, now the Dodgers got fooled.
