Another Dusty-led team bats out of order
David Ross batted when it was Corey's turn. Corey was called out after Ross lined out. Ross then got to bat again & singled.
But here's the proof that Dusty has completely blocked out his tenure with the Cubs.
Baker said his only other experience with a team batting out of order came when he was a player and he was the one who hit when he wasn't supposed to. When he came up the second time, he hit a three-run homer.
Ummm.... Dusty? The same thing happened just 4 years ago, back in 2004.... and you went ballistic on C.B. Bucknor. How could you forget that one?

The game he was talking about as a player was...
... on May 4, 1980, Dodgers at Phillies. From Retrosheet, here’s what happened:
The Dodgers were visiting Philadelphia and the top of the first inning was not Dallas Green’s best day on the way to the World Series championship. Davey Lopes singled and Rudy Law reached on an infield error. After Reggie Smith popped out, Law stole second base. Steve Garvey reached on an infield single, scoring the first run of the game. Dusty Baker then hit into a force out leaving runners on first and third but had batted out of turn. Green came out and pointed out the fact that the proper batter had not hit. Thus Ron Cey was called out, the runners restored to their previous bases and Baker batted again. This time he hit a three-run homer to left. Green now was very upset saying that Baker should not have batted believing according to newspaper accounts that Baker’s force out should count and Cey should be ruled out . He was ejected from the game and protested the game. The protest was denied as the rules were followed correctly. The incorrect decision was Green’s when he did not take the out on Baker’s first trip to the plate. The Dodgers eventually won the game 12-10.
That page also has the description of what happened at Wrigley Field on April 16, 2004:
In the top of the seventh inning, Cubs manager Dusty Baker intended to place two new players in the lineup with a double switch but failed to tell Umpire C.B. Bucknor. When the Cubs batted in the bottom of the inning, shortstop Ramon Martinez came to the plate in the ninth spot in the order and doubled. The Reds protested that the Cubs were batting out of order. Pitcher Kent Mercker, the proper batter, was called out. Baker argued with the umpires but was told that the call stood. Yelling & screaming, he tossed his lineup card on the ground and was ejected by Bucknor. Baker threw his hat, walked away and returned; he tossed his hat again, stomped to the dugout and kicked some items in the on deck circle before finally leaving the field. The Cubs won in the bottom of the ninth, 11-10, when Sammy Sosa and Moises Alou hit back-to-back homers to end the game. When Baker arrived home that day, his son called him “Mad Dog.”

If Im not mistaken that 2004 incident was the one that led to the current policy.
Dusty no longer gets mad at the umpires because he doesn’t want to look foolish in front of his kid.

Oh, I see...
In Dusty’s mind, they didn’t bat out of order in the 2004 game….the plate ump just forgot to write down the double switch. So he was right with his quote from yesterday’s game…heh.

This obsession with Dusty is bordering
on the stupid. The guy is gone. He doesn’t manage here any more. Let’s just let it go. Some of the things that Lou does (Overusing Marmol) would be grounds for firing if Dusty did them. It’s all relative to who is managing your team. I for one would be happy if I never saw another Dusty reference on this blog.

I see your point...although
I wouldn’t call it an obsession….I’d call it having some fun at a division rival & at a former manager’s expense…for a silly mistake that shouldn’t happen in a MLB game. It had no real outcome on the game as the Reds were down by six in the ninth.
I just found it humorous while reading the postgame comments that Dusty didn’t remember the 2004 incident, especially considering how bezerk he went when Martinez was called out.

I agree with this.
There are two things worth mentioning in the original post: one, that Baker did this again, and didn’t remember it happening only four years ago, and second, that it happened in the first place—if you look at the Retrosheet link I posted, you’ll see that it happens only once every two or three years.
Something like this would be worth posting no matter who the manager was.

I am not faulting the post, Al it's just
the Dusty bashing that is getting a bit tiresome. I definitly think the act was worth mentioning since he did the same thing before and bitched about it like you said. I guess I was anticipating some of the inevitable bashing posts that will follow.

It just that the constant
bashing of Dusty and Corey have gone past the humorous and into the ridiculous. I can understand the occasional funny comment and the mention of things like this, but it’s starting to get a bit tiresome. Some people want to hang onto this stuff like grim death and justify their criticisms from the past, but I just want to let it go.

Dusty, the employee, Corey, bashing
will never go out of style. The majority of people here still find this kind of stuff amusing. If you don’t like it, then you’re better of ignoring it. My dad still complains about Ron Santo sliding short into third base 40 years later. This is pretty normal for sports fans.

Dusty stupidity...
I noticed that Corey Patterson got the start for the Reds on Saturday against Johan Santana. Not surprisingly, when I saw the highlights on Fox, they showed Corey whiffing repeatedly. Big shock.
Soriano should hit 5th. Period.

Corey
I like how Patterson found a way to make an out without even leaving the dugout.

I have mixed feelings about Dusty and CPat
I always wanted desperately for Corey to succeed. Same way with Dusty. But since they’ve been shown the door, I now want the Cub orgnaization to look justified in the decision and if the two in question do poorly; the Cubs look justified.
Things are now going SO badly for them though, that there seems no further point in wishing them ill—the team looks pathetic. The good news is that their horse’s patooka announcer Marty B deserves every stinkin’ bit of it.
I’ll also say on the 2004 out of order incident-i remember Dusty blaming the ump during and after the incident, but the speed in which the opposition jumped on it demonstrated to me that the error was Dusty’s without a doubt. The ump and the opposition both knew Dusty had goofed immediately-he was embarassed and needed a scapegoat. We’ve all done that….scapegoats go all the way back to the days of father Abraham!

I remember that...
I was listening to it on the radio and Ramon Martinez hit a lead off double with the Cubs down late. Then the umps declared Ramon out because they batted out of order. And then Dusty went nuts.
