Cubs looking at Jim Edmonds?
Unless, it comes with a guaranteed World Series title this year, no thank you.
Edmonds looked done last year and I was surprised the Padres signed him for as much as they did. Edmonds is batting a whopping .178/.265/.233 and is not aging gracefully in CF.
I know our OF has questions, and that Pie needs to hit and to have playing time, but would this seem like a good move to anyone here?

This would be
a Craig Monroe type deal, but I dont think it happens. Just because one or two writers mentions it doesnt mean it happen.
San Diego offense is putred and THEY released him, it doesnt make sense.

Not only does he look like he's done,
he is one of my least liked Cardinals of all time. Beyond my dislike for him, his bat is weak and he’s lost enough speed that he’s not a plus center fielder any more. I see Pie or Johnson putting up better numbers and playing a much better CF.

It's bull...
Just another lightweight piece from Van Dyke over at the Trib. Basically:
New face coming?
Could the Cubs be interested in signing center fielder Jim Edmonds, just released by the Padres after hitting .178 and struggling in the field? They are exploring the possibility, according to some in the know.Manager Lou Piniella long has desired another left-handed bat to go with Kosuke Fukudome. Felix Pie has been unreliable. Signing Edmonds could allow the Cubs to send Pie to Triple-A Iowa for steady work.
Asked about the possibility of a left-handed bat being added, Piniella said, “We’ll just have to see what happens.”

I can see it now – Jim and Lou holding their daily staff meeting…
Jim: Okay, anyone have any ideas on how we can improve the ballclub?

Randy Bush: Well, San Diego just released Edmonds. We could take a look at him.
another brief silence…

Here's the real scoop.
It comes from this MLBTR post titled “Cubs Considering Edmonds?” which says:
According to Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs are “exploring the possibility” of signing center fielder Jim Edmonds. This was first reported by Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio 1000 yesterday evening.
Here’s the Tribune article. It says:
Could the Cubs be interested in signing center fielder Jim Edmonds, just released by the Padres after hitting .178 and struggling in the field? They are exploring the possibility, according to some in the know.
That poses it as a question, and seems like just another sportswriter rumor here. NO source is cited, just “some in the know”. I’m guessing the “some in the know” consists of a couple of writers and/or radio guys sitting around shooting the breeze.
We demolished this last week. Signing Edmonds would be beyond stupid.

Here is the question: What is the best for the club and what is best for Pie's development
I think they start with the thoughts is whether Pie can develop in a pennant race as a part time player or not.
ANSWER: NOT GOOD ODDS
Does Edmunds temporarily fit that void? What is the void? Defensive utility OF’er and left-handed bat as a part time player?
ANSWER: LOOK INTO IT.
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

Precisely.
If the Cubs need a defensive outfielder well, hey, HOW ABOUT FELIX PIE? And if you want to talk offense:
Jim Edmonds’ OPS so far in ‘08: .498 in 90 ABs.
Felix Pie’s OPS so far in ‘08: 571 in 63 ABs.
I’d still like to see Pie start unconditionally against RHP.

Anybody Got A Rejuvenator?
Hey, if someone out there has some type of rejuvenator that can make guys play as if there were five years younger, then signing Edmonds would be a great idea. Edmonds, in his prime, was a better player than Reed Johnson and Felix Pie are now. However, Edmonds is now not only past his prime, he’s past being even a quality 5th (not even 4th) outfielder.

If Edmonds Joins The Cubs
That would guarantee a Gold Glove for the Cubs! I mean… wasn’t he the default vote on every ballot?

Well...
As mentioned the other day, I would like the Cubs to investigate the addition of Jim Edmonds. What can it possibly hurt? Lou Piniella would like another left handed bat and Edmonds plays center field. Plus there is no denying his baseall pedigree. He’s a battle tested, pennant chasing tested ballplayer.
Do the due diligence on the guy I say. It’s going to cost the major league minimum to sign him because San Diego and St. Louis are on the hook for his $10 million owed in 2008. If the scouting on Edmonds checks out OK then bring him in for a physical. If the physical checks out OK then sign him. If he works out, then great. If not the simply cut him and there is very little lost.

Edmonds might have been the worst regular player in the National League up to the time he was cut.
The Cubs probably have five outfielders in their farm system who are better. I’d take Sam Fuld or Josh Kroeger or even Tyler Colvin before Edmonds.
It’s absolutely pointless. Move on.

It's all in the name
It’s like people saying we should go out and get Kenny Lofton. We don’t need a guy who’s best suited to platoon.
The only reason we would ever sign someone right now is to get Pie everyday AB’s in the minors….but I’m pretty sure we did that last year. It didn’t help his production in the bigs. He just needs to figure it out.
We don’t need an injury waiting to happen (who will only hit .200) playing CF for us.
I don’t want Griffey, Lofton, or Edmonds. 1992-2003…I would have taken any one of them.
I wish people would quit getting excited about names. We need production, not names.

It's a really dumb idea...
it’s the same mistake the Cubs have repeatedly made in the past: signing a well-past-his-prime former star in hopes of adequacy. Hopefully the organization has made a change for the better and will stop making this knee-jerk mistake.
Edmonds hits less than Pie. He defends less than Pie. He hits for no more power than Pie. If your goal is to upgrade on Pie, then perhaps you should look for a player who is actually an UPGRADE over Pie. That’s even ignoring the debate over whether Pie in the second half of this year will be better than Pie in the first half.
If we were getting Edmonds from 2000-2004 the answer would be an unequivocal yes. But there’s a reason he was cut: he’s not remotely good anymore. His OPS+ has dropped more than 20 points in each of the last four years. He was a bad player last year, and now he’s just an awful player.

Worth investigating, that is all
Cubs have a need in center field. Cubs also have a need for left-handed hitting with power, or so says Lou Piniella. There is little downside in kicking the tires of Jim Edmonds. His history and impact in this league is impressive. And on paper at least he fits the profile of what can help this ballclub.
Is Edmonds done? Maybe. But lets find out. If it doesn’t work out, then cut him all over again.

So it's pretty much the same rumor.
Now… having said earlier that I didn’t think this was anything more than a MSM rumor, it may be more than that.
I spoke to Deep Goat today. Apparently the Cubs ARE at least investigating Edmonds, my guess being that they are looking over his medical reports, given his long injury history (and concussion last year).
The question, of course, is why a team like the Padres, who are starved for offense, would release someone if he had anything left. Perhaps the Cubs feel that he might hit better away from the cavern that is Petco.
If that’s what they are looking at, the answer is “no”. On the road this year he’s hitting .228/.333/.298. We already have outfielders who can do that.
So my feeling is that they’ll look at it, and just say no.

The Cubs front office does (or at least should) have scouts, performance analysts and other people who evaluate things like this. I would presume that EVERY time a player ends up being released like this, those people at least take a look at things.
I’d lose a lot of confidence in those people if they concluded that Edmonds was worth a risk, but who knows.

I think this is exactly what is happening.
I’d expect them to pass.

Wow. How pissed will Kenny Lofton be if the Cubs actually do this.

At this point in his career
Edmonds is a worse CF than DeRo, and DeRo could probably outhit him batting left-handed.
I’d rather see Lou play Jason Marquis in CF—faster, better arm, and better LH bat.

Ted Lilly
might be a better LH bat then Edmonds at this point.

It would make more sense...
to move Dome to CF and but Z in RF when he doesn’t start than to let Jim Edmonss ever put on a Cubs Uniform.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

My God, man, I think you just figured out what to do with Jason Marquis!

Why not?
Good LH bat, which would get better with every day play. Very fast. Very good arm, though doesn’t always have good control. Could still be used in mop-up relief, so the Cubs would only need 11 other pitchers.
I may be dumb, but I am creative!

Maybe...
He’d make a good backup.

If Edmonds ever became a Cub
He might be the first player in Cubs history to get a standing “boo” in his first trip to the plate as a new Cub in Wrigley Field.

It's already been said but....
If the Cubs are going to sign another outfielder (and I am not saying they even should) it should be Kenny Lofton.
Kenny Lofton > Jim Edmonds
By far….

Gordon Wittenmeyer in the Sun-Times
is reporting that they’re going to sign Edmonds as soon as he clears waivers.
