Padres worst in baseball...should we make a trade with them?
Here is something that just occurred to me this AM while watching ESPN showcase Greg Maddux 350th win: With the Padres in absolute disarray, should we consider working a deal to bring Maddux back? Would this total class act be a help to us in our quest to end the curse? No question Greg is better than our #4 & #5 slots. The only thing better than winning it all with K Wood closing out the game would be in a game that Greg Maddux started. I wouldn't think we would have to give up that much.

I imagine we’d have to wait a few months before the Padres would conclude that they aren’t competing this year. By then Hill, Marshall, or Gallagher may have emerged. I don’t think this sort of trade is happening anytime soon.

Eventually, Maddux WILL be moved
....at the highest price possible. A Columnist suggested this yesterday. “Go let him pitch in a pennant race….don’t let his last year be with this mess…”

no question he's better than our 4 and 5?
I would rather have maddux than marquis…but is maddux an improvement over hill, gallagher, marshall, &lieber (whichever are in the rotation at a given time)?
by cubsmania on May 12, 2008 4:35 PM CDT 0 recs
Yes
Of course yes. In case you didn’t get the memo Rich Hil and Sean Marshall are currently pitching at Triple A. Sean Gallagher has a bright future in my estimation but it is tall order to think he will perform at a high level his rookie season. Jon Lieber is a valuable inter-changeable part who has demonstrated the nice ability to be Mr. Jack-of-all-trades.
I’d give my left nut to have Greg Maddux back with the Cubs. How sweet it would be to see him wrap up his brilliant career by pitching in the World Series for the Cubs in 2008.

rich hill
is in AAA to get straightened out. The guy has shown he can be a good pitcher at the major league level. Maddux is doing fine, but I’m sure petco park is also a good place for him to pitch. Maddux would do fine for the cubs but I think we could use the same trade bait to get someone else who would help the team more than maddux would.

I would rather have maddux pitching than marquis...
But I think gallagher or lieber could do just as good replacing marquis as maddux could do at this stage of his career.

Ooooh, I get it.
You see moving from the bigs to AAA as a demotion.
It’s not. It’s a place for players to work problems out.
Hill and Marshall will be back.

In case you didn't get the memo
Ted Lilly rocked the diamondbacks. Soriano had an excellent series instead of striking out “a million times” or doing something like going on a rare stretch where he hits 15 homeruns in a week to boost his stats for the rest of the years suckitude. I don’t remember the other crap you spewed about the 3 game diamondback playoff series but you’ve been proven completely wrong. 3 games don’t matter, and bringing up more crap like how our current pitchers (especialy your terrible logic with Hill) are worse enough than Maddux at this stage of his career to merit a trade doesn’t matter either.

Offer then Sean Marshall or Felix Pie. Seriously.

But according to YOU yourself
Marshall and Pie are worthless piles of crap, so how in the hell do they bring back Greg Maddux, he the pitcher that you would “give your left nut for”
Im confused, then again when challenged you rarely answer, you are a sheep and a leming Cub fan. Whoops I forgot Im on the ignore list.

Not A Bad Idea
Maybe, Maddux might express an interest to the Padres in wanting to be traded to the Cubs, if the Padres continue to struggle and the Cubs continue to contend. It’s all about what the Cubs would have to give up. We don’t know how Hill and Marshall are going to be down the line. For the rest of 2008, I would rather have Maddux than those guys. I believe it’s still a bit early for the Padres to want to trade Maddux, but Hendry should still put out feelers for how much the Padres might want for Greg.

MAD-DOG.....WE Want you....we need you....we like you
And BTW this will not be his last year. I suspect he has 10-12 wins in his tank this year, and would be a fine #4 pitcher in the rotation, hopefully matched up with the opponents mid to lower rotation pitcher.
Mad-dog would also bring that knowledge that the staff and club would love and need. Again the price would not be horrific, E-Patterson and Huffpauir might bring him here sooner than later.
I see him pitching next year and eclipsing the 363 wins mark of Warren Spahn and then moving him in the Christy Matthewson/Grover Cleveland Alexander level of 373. Right now he is 3-3 in 8 GS, 3.60 ERA and 1.16 WHIP figure he has 28 or so starts left, especially with a contender….I can see him winning 12-13 wins with a good team. That puts him beyond Galvin and Nichols, both 19th century pitchers and coming up to the rubber armed Spahn who is at 363.
A good season and Mad-Dog will find another club next year, possibly the Cubs again, who knows. Let us presume he wins 12 more bringing him to 362 and a year of 12 more wins and he is at 374 and only behind Cy Young 511 and Walter “THE TRAIN” Johnson at 417.
If Mad-Dog surpasses Mathewson and Alexander’s record of 373 he would be considered the greatest modern day pitcher, hands down. He will probably also surpass 3500 K’s in the next two seasons, where this season he will pass 10th place Phil Niekro at 3342 (he has 3299 right now) and close in on Johnson’s 3509 who is currently 9th.
Ironically the K is a modern day record and not wins, as it goes: Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton, Bert Blyleven, Tom Seaver, Don Sutton, Gaylord Perry and then Johnson are 1-9. After Johnson it is modern day pitchers again,Maddux, Niekro, Jenkins, Gibson, Martinez, Bunning, Schilling, Lolich, Cy Young (18th), Tanana and Cone.
I say bring Greg home.

350 NL Wins Amazing
Maddux has the most NL wins of any pitcher since Warren Spahn. Spahn’s last year was 1965. Maddux wasn’t even born until 1966.

I'd love to have Maddux back
sentimentally. But its just not worth it. I would even support the Cubs to pay him big league money just to get him as a coach and mentor to our young pitchers, but at this stage in his career, we have better options pitching-wise. He is still a pretty good back end pitcher, and other teams are going to need him more than we do.

I'd LOVE to have Maddux back
The problem is he might not want to come back to Chicago. After all, he wants to stay on the West Coast. He has a no trade clause and can veto the trade if he wants to. Also, if we were to pick him up, it would definitely mean that we are in a win now phase. Patterson and two other prospects could get it done, but I don’t know if that is worth giving up having a mid 40s pitcher with MAYBE 1.5 years of service for us..

Trading Maddux wasn't a bad idea at the time...
... but Hendry should have held out for someone better, one of the Dodgers’ prospects. Paying Izturis’ contract without taking him would have worked better than actually letting him play for the Cubs.

Maybe you're on to something.
Sign Edmonds and tell him to just stay home. They won’t have to pay him much and he can’t hurt the Cubs that way.

Dont we just love our MadDog?
I love Greg Maddux! In fact, I think he is the greatest pitcher who has ever pitched. What he has done over the last 20 years is incredible. Its even more so when you realize that his best years where during the roi era. While I think he is awesome, I don’t think he is ever going to come back to the Cubs. Even if the Padres are out of it, I have a feeling he won’t be leaving the team. His home is out there, and he likes them because he is close to home. If we had the chance for Maddux to be our number 4 or 5, AWESOME! But I doubt we have that chance….

It's entirely possible...
... that Maddux will be on the block if the Padres continue to suck. Most likely, it wouldn’t be till closer to the trading deadline. Yes, I’d love to have him back, too, if it didn’t cost too much in terms of players. Just as in 2006, I’m sure Maddux would love to be part of a pennant race if the Padres aren’t in one, and as Jessica has said here, there are only three teams he’d likely agree to go to: the Dodgers, Braves and Cubs.
Stay tuned.
