after winning 4 of 4?

How is it “horrible”? Never good to lose, but…

It would be a tough loss seeing how we came out quickly with a 3-0 lead

and marquis gives it right back to the worst offensive team in the majors

by CubsBall2202 on May 13, 2008 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

It's our 5th starter...

I mean, giving up 4 is bad, especially in the way we did…but did we really think Marquis wouldn’t give up about 4 runs in 5 innings?

"This is the kind of thing … that makes you want to see the Chicago Cubs team lose." Marty Brennaman

by Bildo1805 on May 13, 2008 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions

No, we thought he would, just about.

4/5*9 is is a 7.20 ERA, a bit high for him but not outside of his reach. We just think the Cubs have five pitchers who are better than him, which makes that whole “he’s the fifith starter” business a distraction from the actual facts at hand.

by cwyers on May 13, 2008 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I'm not saying he should be our 5th starter either.

DFA him all the way to Ballpark of Arlington Hell.

Just saying, it’s not a horrible game to lose. Tough one.

Whatever though, really not all that important. Conversation over?

I am well aware of it.

In fact, that’s about how long Mike Fontenot looked like a good baseball player before the truth set in. Lou just hasn’t noticed yet.

by cwyers on May 13, 2008 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

It looks like to me

they are using fontenot for what he is, as a bench player, which is what his career will probably wind up being. As far as Cedeno, my only guess is limit his playing time, so it looks like he is having a good year. Then trade him while his value is high

by bheidge on May 13, 2008 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

This isn't fantasy baseball.

You can’t limit a player’s playing time once he reaches a certain BA or OBP and then sell after that player not playing regular.

No GM is that stupid. Ok there’s a few.

The REAL problem

Theriot’s bunt in the fifth, metaphorically and literally, is the reason why we lost this game tonight. One thing a team with a jumbled order, no consistent pinch hitters not named “Ward” on a shallow bench, and a suspect rotation CANNOT afford to do is play with weak fundamentals. Just as Theriot’s bunt should have advanced the runners and possibly won the game, I fear that weak fundamentals could possibly keep the club from playing Championship-caliber ball.

Lou Piniella seems to geniuenly like Hoffpauir. The problem is can the 28 year old hit at this level if he is only grabbing an ocassional at bat. And what do you really do with him defensively? He’s never played the outfield before and isn’t exactly a natural born athlete. With the presence of Daryl Ward already on this ballclub I have extra hard time figuring a role for Hoffpauir.

Strange game

Can’t win em’ all. But this was a strange game. It seem liked both teams were significantly off their rhythm because of the constant threat of the tarp coming out. I think the Cub hitters were pressing thinking they had to hurry up and get a couple runs before the tarp came out and the game probably goes down as a rain-shortened contest.

But the umps kept letting them play.

Mr. Towers, tear down this wall (er, I mean give us back Greg Maddux) !

It was certainly a factor....

...one year ago, this game doesnt make it out of the 5th. No way the old field would have handled that rain

Felix Pie must play everyday!

CSN asked DeRosa about Edmonds, and his response:

“They keep signing guys, and when Big Z pitches I’m going to be hitting ninth in this lineup!”

I love Mark DeRosa

The best free agent signing next to Kosuke and Greg Maddux during the Jim Hendry regime. DeRosa is a professional ballplayer in every dimension. Big asset to this ballclub too.

Is it pretty much imminent than?

I just read the headline on Cubs.com: “Potential acquisition could displace Pie” but I guess that means only AAA, correct. Would we be giving anything up to acquire Edmonds? And also, did you see the latest on Bonds, he was charged with 15 counts in a new indictment.

I don't believe the Cubs are officially allowed to talk to him...

...until the waivers process ends tomorrow, and at what time tomorrow I have no idea.

Scrubs!

Haven’t read all the comments, so please excuse me if this point’s already been made, but has anyone else noticed that the Cubs have a penchant for losing to complete scrubs? Seems like the surest way to beat us is to call up a career minor leaguer and let him start. I mean, Estes??? Come on!

Did we really put Jose Macias on the field? Really???

by ksreed on May 13, 2008 10:57 PM CDT reply actions

That's baseball...

...but I will also say, Estes made some real good pitches tonight against some of the Cubs best hitters.
