Daryle Ward
Just read this on the Cubs website:
***
Ward had 18 total at-bats in April. Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee, on the other hand, had 105 at-bats. It would seem to be tough for Ward to get his timing at the plate.
"Sometimes it is," Ward said. "For me, once I feel like I'm comfortable in the batter's box, I don't need the timing part. I can get a hit. The timing comes in when you're trying to drive more balls. If I was trying to hit home runs, then I'd say, yeah, it'd be more difficult.
"In the role I'm in, I have to just get a hit. If it goes far enough to get out of the ballpark, good, but if not, I still accomplished what I wanted to."
Ward has a unique role on the team.
"I'm kind of like Kerry Wood on offense," he said. "I'm the closer on offense."
***
See, that's why I like Daryle Ward. "In the role I'm in, I have to just get a hit." But Daryle, that's role every hitter should be in! Just get a hit. And his approach should be everyone's approach. At the very least, it should be people's 2 strike approach, and their close and late approach. He has a .300/.400/.450 line as a pinch hitter the last thre years, compared to a .275/.340/.450 line as a position player, when he is in a different role than "just get a hit".
Tough to complain about the Cubbies O right now, but their are still some guys who should pay attention to what D Ward is doing.

I was looking at Ward's career numbers just today
And I also noticed how much better his OBP has been since Washington started using him as a part-timer. It’s an interesting fact, and the opposite of what you’d expect from most guys… often you hear about pinch-hitters and bench guys pressing in the at-bats they get, trying to get big hits to win starting jobs.
Maybe Ward, instead, is extra-focused on having a good at-bat when he’s up for his one time per game. And less fatigued. I’m not really sure what kind of a role these things play for him. Or maybe he really changed his approach around the same time. He hasn’t had enough starts since then to have any meaningful starts-vs-bench-appearance splits.
At first I thought that his facing relievers almost exclusively could help out his OBP, but I checked the 2007 numbers and relievers allow about the same OBP as starters. They walk more batters, but also strike out more and give up fewer home runs, with a similar BABIP (as you’d expect). Relievers allowed slugging percentages 40 points lower than starters, and that certainly hasn’t been reflected in Daryle’s numbers since becoming a bench player. So his success coming off the bench appears to be attributable to his own improvements.
I wonder if any team would see his improved hitting in recent years and offer him a part-time starting job… it would be interesting to see how he did in that role, though as long as he’s productive I’d rather see him hit well with the Cubs.

Probably not.
He’s getting older and less mobile. Starting once every couple of weeks is probably about his limit. Now, you could ask if he’d be a useful DH for an AL team, and the answer is probably yes.

Were you opening
up a blue/white umbrella (last row) during B1 last night? Think one of the cameras were on you briefly.

Yes, that was me.
I got two text messages and three phone calls right after from people who saw me.

It's good to see...
That he knows his role. I know some guys who warm the bench and think they’re the best thing ever. Not that he does warm the bench. I’d say he’d start on maybe fifty percent of teams. I also think his approach is a good mindset to have.

Daryl Ward is a professional hitter
One of the best, if not the best, pinch hitting weapons in the game. A very important asset to the Cubs.

Which is why you've been a supporter from the start
Right?
Oh wait.
Ward CANNOT play the outfield, not even as a joke during a rain delay. He can barely play 1st base. And yet Hendry shells out 1 million bucks for a pinch hitter type who, in theory, should be lucky to grab 75 at bats given his positional limitations. Sorry, but this move is idiotic. Ward is a big fat tub of goo who has a reputation for being moody and lazy. And his pinch hitting statistics are not impressive. I would have dug up Lenny Harris before handing over a contract to Ward.

Perfect.

That's it - I've completely lost all respect for MDBNIU now
How dare he call Daryle Ward a “big fat tub of goo”. Any self-respecting baseball fan would know there is only one big fat tub of goo that has ever graced the diamond, and that would be Terry Forster.
The guy could hit too. Check out his line – .397/.412/.474 in 78 at bats

I'm glad he got off the schnide
the other day with that hit to LF. No one will ever confuse him with an all-star fielding LF or 1B guy but he’s got his spot on the roster, he knows his role and will continue to contribute to the team.
