"I guess you had some lean years, and didnt have to beat it hard" - Craig Sager

by Galvan316 on May 14, 2008 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, Peavy had a really bad start...

Lilly had 4 really good innings and one really bad one, and did a good job of surviving what could have been the second really bad inning. Gotta look at the total package, not just the Ks.

by SouthernCub on May 14, 2008 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but 11 Ks, 1 BB, 0 HR...

...tells me that Lilly did his job, and balls just fell in for hits against him. A pitcher normally doesn’t control his hits.

by cwyers on May 14, 2008 9:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Not saying it was a terrible start...

just saying that the 11 Ks don’t tell the whole story. He had 4 amazing innings and 1 really bad one.

by SouthernCub on May 14, 2008 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Running it through FIP-ERA...

...gives you a 0.03 ERA for that sort of a performance. Yeah, six hits – but pitchers don’t give up hits, defenses do, in my opinion.

by cwyers on May 14, 2008 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

He had four very good innings...

and one very bad one. It’s that simple. FIP-ERA away, but he was two different pitchers tonight.

by SouthernCub on May 14, 2008 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Fielding Independent Pitching.

It’s an ERA calculator that tries to see how a pitcher would perform with a neutral/average defense. The formula is:

((13HR+3BB-2*K)/IP)+3.2

It’s a quick-and-dirty way of looking at a pitcher’s results based upon the Three True Outcomes, based on the assumption that a pitcher doesn’t control how often a batted ball is turned into a out or becomes a hit.

by cwyers on May 14, 2008 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions

gotcha....

Because the only thing a pitcher controls are HR, BB, and K. How did those constants get formed?

by GoCubbies34 on May 14, 2008 9:17 PM CDT up reply actions

A guy named Tom Tango ran a regression analysis...

...and found numbers that seemed to match up pretty well. It’s a simplified version of DIPS.

by cwyers on May 14, 2008 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Please stop it

It was not a “quality” start, but the bottom line is he’s leaving with a lead and is in line to get the victory.

...but at the same time, nobody’s spouting masses of obscenities or being downright unbearable, and people can go ahead and vent now and again.

I view this chat as a virtual bleachers or a sports bar – you want to go ahead and keep it to where people can come in and enjoy themselves, but you get a lot of in-the-moment reaction. And I think you can go overboard the other direction as well.

No apologies

When a guy strikes out 11 and all someone wants to do is point out the runs he allowed - in a game he’s leading - that’s ridiculous.

And if you don’t like my “pattern of behavior,” talk to Al. I’ve got a few people whose “pattern of behavior” I’m not thrilled about, either.

Overt homer?

Hardly. The guy rips the Reds every time it’s deserved. I was in Cincy last week for the Cubs series, and on the front of the Monday paper was a story about the Reds getting swept by the Braves. It had a quote from Brennaman that said “They might not win another game.”

I think he has a sore spot for the Cubs because he’s ticked about how they handled his son’s departure. And I think he’s become a bit of a cranky old man at the end of the road (I think he’s finished after the 2010 season). But no way in heck is he a homer.

BTW, did you know when Staats left, the Cubs approached Marty about the job? He said no, he was happy in Cincy, but his son might be interested. That’s how the Cubs got Thom.

I'll freely admit

That I don’t have numbers to back it up. However, my thought is that Marmol is our best arm in the ‘pen. I don’t like the idea of him handing the ball to an arm that isn’t as good as his unless it is Wood coming in to close the door.

Just a gut feeling.

by Jayo525 on May 14, 2008 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

the basic problem is

that her motion is very different than a hardball pitcher. She throws 63 with lots of motion but from a much shorter distance. But she is one of the best of what she does. I’d be interested in seeing her pitch against male softball players. And I don’t mean Chicago style slow pitch.

by bubbamike the one and only on May 14, 2008 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Is that a problem?

It actually could help her out, the same way that submariners and knuckleballers are helped by throwing off the natural timing of the hitter.

Now, if EVERYBODY in MLB threw that style, they’d probably get lit up. But as a short reliever, and as a one-of-a-kind? Might get by on the “gimmick” alone.

Wood hasn't done so hot in those, either.

He’s only converted two out of four of his one-run saves. He’s converted all of his three-run saves, which helps his numbers a bit.

It's only going to cost around 284,000 as well.

And, if he sucks, he’ll probably get to see if the Iowa unis bring out his eyes.

Or just get dumped. Ugh, Edmonds. I hope that, if this doesn’t work out, this lights the proverbial fire up Pie’s ass to start hitting more efficiently(or for Piniella to give him more consistent PT).

I'm praying u r right

It will be interesting to see how many times Edmonds legs out an infield hit or stretches a single into a double. Or steals a base, or puts down a sac bunt. Or doesn’t dive for a flyball because he ran underneath it. I could go on and on….
I’m hoping all this ragging on Edmonds will come back to haunt me and he’s a stud in CF for a few months. But even I can write the scouting report for opposing pitchers on Edmonds: High Heat.

...and instead am greeted by Hawk and DJ talking about players trying to “make adjustments and do the little things to get things going again.” Yay! And then I heard one of them say the STUPIDEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD ON TELEVISION:

“What I’d like to see is a guy who’s struggling at the plate just throw himself in front of a pitch. Just… go up there and throw himself over the heart of the plate, and say ‘I slipped’ and take his base.”

No you would not! No you would not want to see anyone do this ever. There’s absolutely no way that you would get a free base out of that. What you could get was DEATH. Death or absurdly serious head injuries.

Stupid, stupid, STUPID.

by cwyers on May 14, 2008 11:06 PM CDT reply actions

Want to post this here also because i feel strongly about it but here is m OP on #15

I feel like i am living in the twilight zone… I am legitimately excited about Jim Edmonds coming aboard. This is a guy that I have hated since he became a red bird when i was in eighth grade. Eight years later IF he has something left in the tank (which both our scouts and Greg maddux think he does) this is the type of upgrade that could do wonders for our ball club.

Do not be surprised if tomorrow Dome is hitting second where he should be and Edmonds is hitting fifth. THis will help Aramis and Lee (who is slumping) by putting an OBP machine in front of them. I think this will really help our offense. We were not going to play Pie anyway for whatever reason so this transaction needed to happen. We paid him 284,000 for one year. and if it doesnt work we will cut and run and never look back. There is only positives in this. Except for if Carlos punches him in the eye. I am about to link two articles. The first of which is the one which talks about why we are signing him and the second of which is the players reactions….

On another note I love Lou and Hendry but I think they have really mis managed Pie… This is pathetic that we are sending him to AAA. At least there though he can hit consistently and hopefully get his stroke back….

It pains me to say this but can we please give #15 a chance…. ANd by a chance i mean a 2 week stretch…. That is all. I respect peoples differences. But lets give it a chance.
