Minor League Wrap--May 14
Four losses tonight and no one is going to care because the Cubs won. I get far less cranky comments when the Cubs win. I haven't actually checked it out, that's just my impression.
Iowa Cubs
Certainly don't play in Portland this season. And they didn't play anyone tonight.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies lost to the Huntsville Stars, 3-2.
Mitch Atkins was the hard-luck loser tonight. Atkins went seven innings and allowed three runs, but only one of them was earned. One of the unearned runs did score on his error, though, so maybe he did deserve the loss, after all. Atkins allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out four. Tanner Watson pitched the final two innings without allowing a run.
Right fielder (actually, all-around utility guy) Matt Camp went 2 for 4 with a double and a stolen base. Second baseman Matt Matulia went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI, both on sacrifice flies.
Daytona Cubs
Not being used to night baseball anymore, Daytona was harpooned by the Brevard County Manatees, 6-3.
Adam Harben was the starter and had major problems finding the plate. Harben lasted only three innings in which he allowed only one hit but walked seven Manatees, resulting in two runs. Harben struck out four.
Reliever Jayson Ruhlman took the loss. Ruhlman pitched two innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.
Third baseman Josh Lansford went 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored and an RBi. He also had a caught stealing and made his eleventh error of the season.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs dropped a double-header to the Quad City River Bandits, 3-2 and 7-4.
In the first game, Alberto Cabrera saw his record fall to 1-5, despite a textbook "quality start." Cabrera gave up three runs in six innings of work on five hits and three walks. He struck out three.
First baseman Jovan Rosa went 1 for 3 with his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the second inning.
In the nightcap, Kevin Kreier made his first appearance of the season and gave up a pair of two-run home runs in three innings of work. Kreier gave up seven hits, walked no one and struck out three. Steve Vento, however, took the loss by giving up three more runs in two innings of relief. Vento allowed three hits, one walk and struck out one.
Catcher Mario Mercedes went 1 for 3 with a three-run double in the first inning. Center fielder Cliff Andersen went 2 for 3 with a walk, a double and a run scored.

I looked at the standings
Ah, The Cubs are struggling my friend, I don’t recall the whole system down as far as wins and losses.

The I-Cubs
are in first place, though.
But yes, in terms of wins and losses, the system is struggling.

Heard that the Smokies
had agreed to be affiliated with the Cubs through 2012. I’m disappointed that West Tenn lost the affiliation after ‘06, but asking a town the size of Jackson, TN to support a AA team over the long haul is about as ridiculous as asking Memphis to support an MLB team. By the way, the longest distance I have ever traveled to see a Cubs minor league team play was from Memphis to Chattanooga, to see the Smokies play as the visitors. That guy, who went all the way from Portland to Des Moines to see the I-Cubs, has certainly got me beat.

Josh Vitters
Can somebody provide status on Josh Vitters? Where in the heck is he? It’s mid May and I don’t get it.

It doesn't really matter.
Josh Vitters is either at:
1. Extended Spring Training.
2. Class A ball.
3. Somewhere that is neither of those things.
I’m too lazy to actually check which of these is true. Now, here is the important point: this is almost completely pointless to even think about. Do you wonder about what you’re going to eat for lunch three or four years from now?
Josh Vitters is lunch three or four years from now. What he’s doing right now is… well, it isn’t meaningless, but there’s really nothing useful analytically.

He's at
EXST with a bum hand.
But yeah, what he’s doing now isn’t that important.

What does that mean???
YES, it is important whether he is hurt now or not playing. He’s a multi-million dollar bonus baby picked # 4. His development doesn’t get going until he is healthy and playing. It’s not like you ever feel okay about having him sit on the shelf for awhile. I understand following that his MLB ETA is 4 to 5 years away, but this apparent injury is a monkey wrench into the works.
I hope he heals, heals right and gets going on the development and playing time.

It's not like
he’s sitting in Arizona playing Wii. He’s working on his development down there.
And he was the #3 pick in the draft.
