Which matters most? The name on the front.......
........of the jersey or the name on the back. That statement was made by Mike Golic this morning on his radio show.
When all of a sudden a fan is challenged to root for someone they've disliked intensely for years, and at the expense of a touted prospect, it can be a little bewildering.
But as Lou Gramm from Foreigner once sang, "The damage is done". In my view, we all need to hope that he is a thoroughbred champion who has another rally left in his career. That he is someone who will rise up to the challenge of winning over Cub fans and in bringing home the prize.
I think it wise to at least be open minded; once the shock wears off. :c-)

i hated this guy
as much as anyone, mostly when he was with the Cardinals, and had a mild dislike for him even when he was in LA.
But now that he’s a Cubby, I’ll be pulling for him as much as any of the other 24 guys.
I don’t expect him to get the Nomar treatment, but it would be appropriate if Cubs fans showed a little respect for him today.

Cause he strikes me as a real respectful man himself?
I certainly want the Cubbies to win with his help or not but I don’t owe this guy anything. Best way to win me over (as if this matters to him) hit 1.000 the rest of the season and win a WS. Then we can talk about respect.
Calm down.

We root for laundry...
That’s the way it is these days. The fact that he was a Cardinal is irrelevant to me. Hopefully he has something left in the bottom of the tank. I doubt it, but hopefully I’m wrong.

What's interesting is...
... when he was traded from the Angels to the Cardinals in 2000, quite a number of people I knew wanted the Cubs to go after him. The Angels got Kent Bottenfield and Adam Kennedy. Kennedy at the time was a top infield prospect, and Bottenfield - who pitched two years for the Cubs, 1996 and 1997 - had just finished an 18-7 year with St. Louis, a 30-year-old pitcher who had just made the All-Star team.
Edmonds, meanwhile, had spent half of 1999 on the DL. At the time it looked like a steal for the Angels.
Obviously, it wasn’t. Bottenfield flopped and Kennedy, though decent, never produced for the Angels anything close to what Edmonds did for St. Louis.
Most of us don’t like Edmonds. I personally think he has nothing left, and if he starts off poorly, he will get booed to the level of Todd Hundley or LaTroy Hawkins.
However, if Hendry and Piniella are right and Edmonds suddenly starts hitting again, I’ll be very happy.

Except for Game Five of the 2002 ALCS, of course.

Well, true.
But overall, his career has just been OK, not great.

As soon as he puts on those pinstripes
He is a Cub and I will support him, I will be working the game today so it will be interesting to see how the crowd reacts. I for one hope that Hendry saw something that no one else did and edmonds has a great season with us

Good to know
Mike Golic still has all his clichés memorized.
This diary is shocking. I had no clue people actually quoted Foreigner.

Foreigner...
I made the suspect fit the evidence in this case Josh….once he was signed, the debate no longer mattered and “the damage was done”. Then, the lyric came to mind. Would it have been better had I quoted Churchhill? “Never, Never, Never, give up.” Or maybe Dr. Henry Lee at the OJ Trial…..”something wrong here.” How about Bill Clinton..”step into my office and we’ll talk about the first thing that comes up.”

It's going to be tough
seeing as how I spent the better part of the past 5 years wanting to see someone put one in his ear, but he is a Cub now and because of that I will be hoping that he does well, if anything else simply because him doing well for the Cubs would really mess with Cardinals fans.

Cheering for laundry...
Obviously we can love/dislike some Cubs more than others, but it’s always hard when someone you despise puts on the blue pinstripes.
Aside from this Edmonds debacle, my least favorite Cub was George Bell – hated that guy when he was in Toronto. However, they did get Slammy for him from the White Sux!

Honestly, what choice do we have but to "root for the laundry"?
We are Cubs fans. Are we supposed to root for every single player who has ever worn the uniform even when he leaves?
I’m not an Edmonds fan, but now that he is a Cub, I want him to do well. I don’t expect him to do well, but it’ll help the team if he does.

Golic is an idiot and Greenie is a sissy
but besides that, there’s one guy who said this during a certain HoF speech just three years ago. I’ll copy that here now. I don’t believe an introduction is necessary…
“Make a great play? Act like you’ve done it before. Get a big hit? Look for the third base coach and get ready to run the bases. Hit a home run? Put your head down, drop the bat, run around the bases. Because the name on the front is a lot more important than the name on the back. That’s respect.”
...but I should anyway: RYNE SANDBERG – Cooperstown, NY – 31 July 2005

The Five Stages of Grief
1. Denial and Isolation. “Jim Edmonds is not now, nor ever will be, a Chicago Cub. Leave me alone. No, seriously, leave me alone!”
2. Anger. “Freakin’ Jim Edmonds?! Really?! REALLY?!”
3. Bargaining. “OK, look, maybe he’s got something left in the tank. He is a left-handed slugger. And he’s hit a lot of home runs at Wrigley. Maybe he can drive in some runs at key points in games and…and…(Daver deteriorates into deranged, cackling laughter)...”
4. Depression. “But, seriously, Jim Edmonds? That smug Cardinals guy? Oh, man…I just can’t go there. Poor Felix. He seemed so happy.”
5. Acceptance. “Jim Edmonds is a Chicago Cub.”

Meh is my response
I sincerely doubt this will make a dent anyway, just like the Craig Monroe deal last year. I just think its poor managment as far as Pie is concerned; they might as well get rid of hiim now.
The team leads the league in runs scored, theyre way over .500, so what would be the harm in letting Pie hit eighth for the rest of the year? I seem to remember Dustin Pedroia struggling mightily last year around this time, and he turned out fine.
Jimbo needs to heed the advice of Axl Rose…just a little patience.
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

The Marlins aren't the Cardinals
I won’t cheer for Edmonds. Won’t boo him either. Just pretend it’s all a bad dream until they release him. It’s a poor signing and a waste of resources. No sense in getting worked up about it either way.
As for the cardinals fans moaning – Jim McMahon played for the packers once and chicago still claims him. Same thing’ll happen with Edmonds and St. Louis. Unless he really is the selfish, resentful jerk many think he is. Then it’s probalby good riddance.

Panic, fear, anger...
The 2-35 is silly and represents about 8 games, and besides who gives a rats ass if redbird fans are laughing. Their team should be as well-positioned as the Cubs are for the division.
Besides I’ve said since the story broke Edmonds is a stop-gap until they figure out what they can do with Felix. If they catch lightning in a bottle (unlikely but not impossible) who knows, otherwise I don’t think Felix being back by mid-late June is out of the question.
Now…..if Felix’ development regresses or he simply doesn’t improve enough and Edmonds is servicable enough, who knows what’ll happen to Felix.

Edmonds got one of the 2 today, LOL!
But seriously it isn’t a big deal and i agree with your post. This team could have kept going with Pie on the roster but they are taking a zero risk gamble that either Edmonds can still hit some and field some at a level that’s somewhat better than Pie, which doesn’t ask for much, until Pie can get something together to warrant a return.
Pie probably wasn’t going to improve on the bench. Edmonds is a known and aging player—he’s old.
I enjoyed watching Edmonds play when he was younger and good. Anyone who can piss off Zambrano is okay with me. (I am a fan of Zambrano the productive pitcher, not Big Z the screaming jackass who can’t take his own medicine.)
