The Padres are a good team...

That last thread was good...

Ahhh... sweet, sweet overflow thread...
So clean and pristine… :)
Holy crap. that was the slowest thread ever.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
That's why I just basically...
waited for this thread to post.
And – How good is Cedeno? Why aren’t we playing him every day?
WE??? You have a mouse in your pocket?
Ask Lou.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Exactly.
I always wonder what people mean by WE?
"I'm retiring to the bedroom to finish this one up. I have tried the floor, both couches, and the recliner and haven't found the lucky spot." - Cribbs463
OK...
On the one hand, I see your point.
On the other – it’s a VERY common convention to say “we” in reference to a team you root for. It’s not like I came on the thread and said “OMG I can’t believe we’re not playing Cedeno every day WTF Lou must be a flaming retard!!!” Not sure why I got jumped on, but makes me want to NOT post.
Sheesh.
I agree Slim
I say “we” all the time. As a Cubs fan, I think we’ve earned the right!!!!
So nobody has to see the scroll bar on my posts!!!!
You need to grow a sack...
if you think that was “getting jumped on”....LOL
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

I think it was getting jumped on...
in light of the fact that my statement wasn’t inflammatory. It was a comment that might have elicited a reasoned response, but instead I got a tossed off, snide comment regarding my use of the word “we” when referring to a team that I’ve followed and loved since I was 12.
I think “Sheesh” sums up my feelings nicely.
Do you want us to call your mommy?
We razz each other pretty good in here…so don’t take it too personally.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

It IS hard to say. And that's a good thing.

Soto has been the best hitter on our team so far this year...
...and plays the toughest defensive position on the diamond VERY well.
That's true. You'll get no argument from me!

Good choice.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
Really? I could spout off about 3 or 4 guys
Not saying your wrong but YES IMO it is close.
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
Nobody on this team is outhitting Soto right now.
He’s our most productive hitter so far, and he’s a good defensive catcher. He is, at this moment, challenging Berkmann and Utley as NL MVP. Nobody on the team is close.
Ha, whatever
I disagree….its is VERY CLOSE
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
Forgot about Chipper - I'll give you that.
But Soto is outhitting Lee, outhitting Ramirez, outhitting Dome… and he’s a catcher! I don’t see how you can say that right now he isn’t our MVP.
Agreed... it isn't close.
Soto has substantially outperformed the others so far.
But yeah, I’d say Chipper has a pretty good case for NL MVP.
Berkmann's probably the guy I'd chose if I was asked and the balloting ended today.
But all four of them have a case right now.
All Im arguing is that you said it wasnt even close
It is very close.
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
Based on what?
Soto leads comfortably in AVG, OBP and SLG. He has a more than 100 point lead in OPS. And he plays the most important defensive position.
Maybe Marmol's impact isn't as broad
But no one’s been more dominant. Its close
"When you have a fat friend there are no see-saws, only catapults." --Demetri Martin
You think its not close
I think its very close. Thats it, thanks.
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
Okay, based on nothing...
If you aren’t going to provide rationale other than “I think so” then I guess we are done with this discussion.
Its close.......
You say its not close….im not going to waste my time because you can give me three stats for one player. Im not going to stop what im doing to show you there are others on this team that are close to being team MVP. Key word is CLOSE. Soto isnt running away with anything….is he leading probably. Is it CLOSE-——YES
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
If you can't provide any support...
how can you say it’s close. Clearly you can stop what you’re doing enough to post regularly, so that’s a terrible excuse.
Saying it’s close without providing any support for why you think that is pointless.
Congrats this is the second time
we have argued about---hmmmmmmm nothing really. It is my opinion Mr Bernstein, I dont need to provide ANYTHING to back up my opinion.
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
sorry for trying to have a rational debate...
I won’t make that mistake again.
Good
Rational? Youre just trying to mix my words. The fact is the team MVP would be close.
Look it up
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
Umm, I did...
he has a 80 point lead over everyone in OPS. He’s tied for the highest OBP. He plays the toughest position defensively. It’s not close.
Close
Thats my opinion I wont change it. Thanks.
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
Have it your way...
Like I said, I can’t argue with “I think so.”
Careful there Hammer.
Thanks
is one of MDBNIU’s favorite dismissive closers!!!!!!one
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Even if you want to go to the triple crown stats...
...he leads the team in RBIs, second in home runs and fourth in average. He’s having a monster season at the plate, and he’s a catcher.
Agreed
Team MVP vote, it would be a close one.
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
You're sounding like MDBNIU right now...
spouting statements with no evidence.
Ha
thanks….....you arent providing much evidence yourself. Thanks for the ###/###/### You are the best.
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
Actually, I did provide evidence...
nice try though.
Right a triple slash stat from one guy
why dont you provide stats from the rest of the team to prove WHY Soto is the runaway MVP?
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
I provided stats RELATIVE TO OTHERS...
that is, by definition, taking into account the rest of the team. Good lord man.
Right I provided my opinion
you could argue against it with whatever you want but it will still be my opinion therefore you can disagree but not prove it wrong
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry
"Swung on belted!!!"---Chip
At least you looked at facts...
If you view an 80 point difference in OPS as close, then we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
maybe he should get it
just for standing in Fielder’s way, that one game.

And if we were talking about the Cy Young award...
...Z would have a case. But starting pitchers rarely win MVP awards, because they only play every five days. (And anyone who thinks that a setup man is going to win the MVP award? I have a greater chance of spontaniously becoming a bowl of sentient Jell-O.)

but we're talking
TEAM mvp. There’s an argument to be made. Your standard of proof is only that there is a case to be made. The fact that you give no credence to any other player to Geo (who has been phenomenal) makes you seem a bit… um. Rigid.
"When you have a fat friend there are no see-saws, only catapults." --Demetri Martin
We're talking about a point in time measurement...
that sort of thing is absolute. Could it change later? Sure. But as of right now, the answer is pretty absolute.
He's the team's best hitter...
...which is normally enough to get you very strong consideration as the MVP. The guy is putting up MVP-caliber numbers for a first baseman as a catcher. And he’s near tops in the league in things like CS% and WP+PB/G – he’s one of the top defensive catchers in baseball as well. I don’t get the countervailing argument here.
Z has been involved in more plays than Soto though.
He may only play 1 in five days, but he is a determinive factor in all those ABs. 62 IP 50H 15BB is about 250 ABs he is involved in. Soto has had about 160 PAs. Does Soto call the games, or does Z decide, or does the bench? Add in 25 Stolen base attempts and it is still only 185.

None of those pitches to Bard hit 85 on the gun.
Shows all the people who fret over Kerry that he is a PITCHER now, not just a thrower. Kerry is one of the best closers in the NL right now, and this is his first year doing it. The worriers need not worry about a couple of bad innings . . . many more good than bad are down the road.

It's tough when you have the future closer waiting in the wings with a sup 1.00 era
"Anything under 5 pitches is a bad at-bat."
Not all great setup men are great closers right away, either.
If Carlos ends up with 10-15 saves like I think he will by year’s end, then I will start thinking about his as the bonafide closer. Until then, why mess with success?

Oh I like it the way it is now.
But one day, he will be the closer. Period.

Seven left on base for the white Bobby Bonds
Way to impress on your first day, Jimmy. Don’t pack your resume away just yet.
Since he has been a Cub, maybe we can trade him to Baltimore now?

or maybe we can trade him to Pitts?

I figured his reception would
be indifferent at best, but the booing went on a little too long when he was out in CF. Boo his bad hitting I guess, but let the man be out there. He’s here, he’s a Cub, get used to it. lol.

Yeah, he appears to be a really smart guy.

I was amazed at the booing today of Edmonds...
Yeah, I’m not a huge fan either, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the Gary Gaetti deal in 1998 either.
Let the man prove himself for a few games. If we’re going to give up on Pie, then we might as well do it with class.
Help me Obi-ONEDEC. You're our only hope.
Too much winning.
No fun.

Demp cchuckling athis face plant

Dempster
Wasn’t that guy, Dempster, supposed to be a suspect starter? He’s practically the ace of the staff. The Cubs would not be in first place without him.
Isn't that unreal?
The Phillies were expecting their former starter turned closer turned starter again Brett Myers to be their ace this year and he’s turned out to be a boob.
Interesting that Dempster, who barely broke the rotation, is making Lou and crew look like geniuses for using him in is true starter role.
Help me Obi-ONEDEC. You're our only hope.
Edmonds did NOT look that bad at the plate
He had a solid single-a long fly that the wind held in the park…..both balls were wel struck. He foolishly swung at one of Maddux’s first pitch sucker sinkers and hit into a DP-on the K with the bags loaded: that was a tough lefty-but the key to the AB was strike one which looked about 6” inside. He complained a tad-but i wish i had tivo to double check that location. He was toast after that-a couple sweeping breaking pitches and he was done. Had he been a little more relaxed, maybe he lays off of one of those.
BBWAA's name should be changed to "Power in the hands of Fools"
He was late
several times on Greg Maddux fastballs.
‘nuff said.

Cubs Can't Clinch Today
I’m afraid with the Cubs only being 2 games up with 121 to go that the Astros will still be mathematically alive regardless of the outcome of today’s Astros-Giants game.
Don't kid yourself...
If HOU wins, they are directly behind us (1.5 games)
They have been HOT.

Wait a minute... who am I here?
Well me might not see jimmy boy for a while...
three lefties this weekend. In Tom Gorzelanny, Zach Ducke and Doumanttrait vs. Gallagher, Z, and Marquis respectely
"I played with one of the best pitchers in history, Greg Maddux," Zambrano said"
I'm excited for tomorrow
I think Gallagher has pretty good stuff; it’ll be fun to see him tomorrow.
"I think Hendry still has a few years to serve on his 'grand larceny' sentence before he can shop in Pittsburgh again" - ballhawk
i think he will be good
he just got gassed last time out…
"I played with one of the best pitchers in history, Greg Maddux," Zambrano said"
not excited about Marquis
maybe I am wrong, but the last two outings, might not inspire confidence
Careful Son, They will break your heart. And then stomp on it. But I will be a Cubs fans until I die. Its your fault Harry!!!

LOL, that does look pretty garish.
Nanika Ga Okoru!

Yes...
but do yourself a favor and look at the BA of EVERY OTHER POSITION PLAYER in the lineup…..Pie and Johnson aren’t going to do much more than 1-4 most of the time anyway.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on May 15, 2008 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, it was an inauspicious start...
...but the fact that he did get a hit and hit another ball very hard does give me some hope. Also, hey, at least the team was getting runners on base for the middle of the lineup.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.
If he was the
only Cub to have left that many men on base this season it would be a big deal. It’s his first game here.
