OK...
On the one hand, I see your point.
On the other – it’s a VERY common convention to say “we” in reference to a team you root for. It’s not like I came on the thread and said “OMG I can’t believe we’re not playing Cedeno every day WTF Lou must be a flaming retard!!!” Not sure why I got jumped on, but makes me want to NOT post.
Sheesh.

I think it was getting jumped on...
in light of the fact that my statement wasn’t inflammatory. It was a comment that might have elicited a reasoned response, but instead I got a tossed off, snide comment regarding my use of the word “we” when referring to a team that I’ve followed and loved since I was 12.
I think “Sheesh” sums up my feelings nicely.

He’s our most productive hitter so far, and he’s a good defensive catcher. He is, at this moment, challenging Berkmann and Utley as NL MVP. Nobody on the team is close.

Soto has substantially outperformed the others so far.

by SouthernCub on May 15, 2008 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's the team's best hitter...
...which is normally enough to get you very strong consideration as the MVP. The guy is putting up MVP-caliber numbers for a first baseman as a catcher. And he’s near tops in the league in things like CS% and WP+PB/G – he’s one of the top defensive catchers in baseball as well. I don’t get the countervailing argument here.
by cwyers on May 15, 2008 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Z has been involved in more plays than Soto though.
He may only play 1 in five days, but he is a determinive factor in all those ABs. 62 IP 50H 15BB is about 250 ABs he is involved in. Soto has had about 160 PAs. Does Soto call the games, or does Z decide, or does the bench? Add in 25 Stolen base attempts and it is still only 185.

Speaking of guys who've lost it,
Catch any Thome AB’s lately? He can’t hit fastballs any more. Can’t get around on ‘em. He looks done.

Thome has looked done
since he arrived in Chicago….
and they haven’t been to the playoffs since… :-)

I dunno, his first couple years were pretty good, but he
really and truly cannot catch up to fastballs this year.

His "numbers" have been decent
but he has not been able to hit in the clutch.
And for a guy who gets 15 mil per year and does nothing else – that’s not good.
I think he sucks.
Just my opinion though.

In fairness

I never thought in my life I would say this, but . . .
Why isn’t Lou playing Ronny every day? This has to be his best hitting stretch in pro baseball, because of the quality and importance of his at-bats.

Dempster
Anyone gettting pretty confident in this guy when he goes out to pitch?
I always liked him and he’s such a good guy you have to root for him.

This year...
Dempster. Simply b/c he’s the most consistent all year. Lilly is looking good lately though, 21 K’s in 2 starts.
