Glendon Rusch Now A Free Agent

http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080515&content_id=2705527&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd

Glendon declined his minor league assignment from the Padres and is now a free agent.

Do you think the Cubs will look him over once more? Where will he end up at?

I like Glendon, but man did he tank out with SD .. just like that Edmonds guy. Rusch had flashes of promise, but I wonder if that isn't all he had. Would a lefty on his caliber help the Cubs at all? Hmmm ..

We alrady have a pitcher in the same vein as Rush...

his name starts with the letter “John Lieber”.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

you sure you don't mean the guy with letters

JM?

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

I have nothing against Rusch...

...but I think that’s an insult to Lieber. I still think he is going to be an important part of the staff before this year is over.

Probably Not

We won’t be looking at him. But I thought of the one good thing from the Edmonds signing. It’s that Tribune Company is still willing to shell out some money. Yea it was a small signing but it does prove that we can also do some deals in July if need be.

by ak123 on May 16, 2008 1:06 AM CDT   0 recs

Not understanding.

The Cubs are paying prorated league minimum. The Padres are picking up his salary above and beyond league minimum (IIRC $5M on a one-year deal).

Witty .sig goes here.

by scareduck on May 16, 2008 1:50 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Right.

It’s costing the Cubs about $290,00, IIRC, and even less if he sucks and they release him in a couple of weeks.

As far as Rusch is concerned—again, if he was bad enough that the Padres let him go, I think it’s best to let him be. Glad he made it back to the majors after a serious illness, and I wish him luck in his post-baseball career.

"Flashes of promise ....?"

Isn’t that like really, really bad? After all, Felix Pie is full of promise and he’s still having problems at the major league level!

I am happy that the Glendon came back from such a serious illness and at least pitched his way into the Padres’ organisation, but I don’t think I’d like to see him in Cubbieblue ….

That rhymes with Carmen Pignatello.

this years pickups....

if we make any pickups i see something like this…..... a michael young from texas, a brian roberts from the o’s and or a maddux type starter. i think were probably set in cf as i do not see anything worth picking up. ive seen writings that the rangers have a ss almost ready in the minors and might be willing to give young up. b-ro is anyone’s guess.

It might beeeeee!! It could beeeeeee!! It issssss!! Homerun!! Holyyyyyyy Cow!!!

Young

I couldn’t agree more about Michael Young. I don’t hear much about him on this site, but he’s a very solid hitter and SS who could comfortably hit 2nd in the Cubs lineup. I don’t think it would take as much to get him as it would to get Roberts, and we could still have DeRosa/Theriot/Cedeno for 2B (although I’m sure at least one of these infielders would go to Texas in a potential deal).

by jmroe23 on May 16, 2008 8:47 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not saying Young isn't available

But the Texas SS is Elvis Andrus who was acquired in the Texeira deal. He is a top prospect but he isn’t even 20 yet either. He’s still a few years away. You won’t get Young cheaply because Texas wants to make room for a prospect.

A free agent?

I thought by now he’d be an insurance agent somewhere.

And re: Glendon Rusch, we know what he can do. And it’s nothing that Jon Lieber, Sean Gallagher, Sean Marshall or even Kevin Hart can’t probably do better. It’s great to hear Glendon recovered, though.

Thanks…I think I’ll leave that on all day. Comes in handy reading all these comments.

Pass on Rusch

He’s horrible. I’m sure Bronson Arroyo wants us to pick him up though.

So nobody has to see the scroll bar on my posts!!!!

by McRipper on May 16, 2008 11:01 AM CDT   0 recs

Hey, that may be an idea.

Glendon should join the Reds as a batting practice pitcher. He could help turn Arroyo into the next Micah Owings.

Rusch was literally

..the last man in the Padres pen, a fate that wasn’t deserved after his performance in AZ. He pitched well in the spring, and earned the shot. However, even the mild SD media wondered why Rusch was on the team if Bud Black would never use him. Rusch went close to 10 days before his first appearence—and was shelled.

Black then dumped him farther back in the pen. He barely saw any work—games had to go 20+ innings before Black would throw him out there. I think we have seen in the past that Rusch was pretty sharp with consistent work.

Just a guess—Black really didn’t want Rusch in his pen. He wasn’t the one who made the call to go ‘west’ with the team.

I’d offer Rusch a AAA Iowa deal (if he’d take it) and keep him for insurance. I’m pretty sure he refused the offer to Portland because he knew the Pads would bury him.

Cubs colored fireworks signify a Cubbies Win at Wrigley West.

Actually, there was a patriotic fireworks display after the game. I don't say this as an Oakland A's fan, but I'll tell you without reservation that fireworks games are better at the Oakland Colisseum.

Tonight's fireworks were over the bay and into the fog. Also, the best audio is inside the stadium while the best views are outside of it.

Usually in Oakland, people are let on the field, the speaker pump music through the stadium, and fireworks are shot overhead from the bridge that connects the stadium to the BART trains.

Long story short--come for the cubs v. giants game, leave for the train ASAP.
Raise that victory flag over Wrigley West!
CUBS WIN!!

Kerry Wood just struck out Fred Lewis despite giving up a triple to Bengie Molina. It was a close call for a slugfest of a game!

There's nothing like having the true blue fans rise up and cheer on our road warriors.
This is the right field wall that separates McCovey Cove and the stadium. Can you pick out all the blue in the stands? I nominate this place as Wrigley West--just grow soe Wrigleyville ivy on those bricks!

Fact: There is a splash hit counter toward the other end of the wall, and it only counts homers hit into the bay by SF Giants. They call them "legitimate splash hits."

What a crock!
It was Veterans Appreciation Day at AT&T Park, hence the military band and flag bearers. It was cool to see SF legend Willie Mays get honored for his military service.
