OT: Mike and Mike imitate Pat and Ron

I found this link on the ESPN Cubs page. Mike and Mike put together a sound clip imitating Pat and Ron. It is actually quite funny. Even Ron isn't that energetic! Greeny doesn't do a very good imitation of Pat. And, they use Cubs that played with them years ago (Alou and Sosa). Anyway, it is definitely worth a look (or two).

Let's shake off the loss to the Bucs, and take the series tomorrow.

Then on to Houston!

The irony is:

Ron Santo, in the real broadcast, is funnier.

The hook for this segment...

...was that back when Caray and Stone were, um, being allowed to seek opportunities elsewhere, some Tribune columnist (I can’t figure out who) was arguing for Greeny to be the play-by-play guy. He wasn’t trying to imitate Hughes so much as to showcase what it would be like for him to do PBP. That’s also why Alou and Sosa were there.

Of course, Greenberg would’ve partnered with Brenly in this arrangement, not Santo. But that’s the gist.

During the Padres series....

on Padres TV, color man Mark Grant did a great “Pat.” Grant admitted he listens to Pat and Ron when Cubs radiocasts are on XM, because he enjoys them so much.

He also did a bit between the two of them, with Hughes asking Santo about his ‘gameday’ toupee, in response to an E-Mail Santo received. Grant wasn’t that good doing Santo, but his Hughes was dead-on.

Hughes is very tough to mimic. I’ve never heard anybody try to do so, outside of Grant and what has been submitted in this fanpost. Those two mediocre talk hosts has best stick to their area of expertise is. (If, of course, you can call this pair—“experts.”)

The next time Mike or Mike says something intelligent,

it will be the first time Mike or Mike has said anything intelligent. Between Greenburg’s complete lack of anything but the vaguest insights into the sports he discusses and Golic’s weak Notre Dame apologetics and proud father tales of his son’s budding football career, that show is the epitome of everything wrong with ESPN…..and yet it’s still more tolerable that Mike North’s Morning Racist Rants.

You mean "white sheet" Mike? I thought I was

tthe only one offended by his antics. The guy is an un-educated racist bastard and proud of it. I just love it the way every time someone of any color gets a job in sports his first comment is “What about the white guy?” Give me a break. He has offended every nationality known to man. The only thing worse that him is his zuba-wearing, knuckle-dragging, mouth-beathing fan club that wants to be one of his “guys”. I really wish he would go back to selling hot dogs.

From what I hear,

when Mike held court inside of BeBe’s, it was even worse…

They do it with taste

Greenie always prefaces their playing of a Santo clip with, “we love the guy and are not making fun of him”. While Greenie is about as effeminate as a man can possibly be regarding the rough side of sports, he does know his Chicago side of things. Having graduated from NW and working at CLTV when it was born in ‘93, he covered the Cubs for a few years.

Golic on the other hand is just another dumb-ass ex-football lineman (uuhhh ball, see guy with ball, kill guy with ball), he gets by with the knowledge he’s the complete opposite of Greenberg. He doesn’t “get” the Chicago thing, which is fine.

I’ve heard them do the imitations before and well, they’re mediocre at best. They really need practice on game calling and color. Their AFL broadcasts were rather lame.

They’ve also commented on Harrys’ work, not making fun in as much as pointing out how much he was loved. To the point, in one discussion that Harry was talking about something while the game was going on and you can even hear the pitch being thrown, taken for a ball and no noting of it. Of course what Greenie didn’t get was that was a TV call Harry was making. He wasn’t on the radio that time.

If there was a local ESPN1000 show at 5-9 AM I would listen to it, just like I do Waddle & Silvy (Colin Cowherd is annoying) and Mac, Jurko & Harry (don’t even know who the national show guys are 2-6pm).

Mike and Mike

aren’t paid to say anything intelligent. They’re paid to tune in listeners; and in case you haven’t noticed, they do. Other than the NY Jets and Notre Dame football, they really have no agendas, unlike Cowherd. They get huge ratings, they must be doing something right. As for me, I enjoy them immensely. Why does everything that is ever said about sports, have to be in the most serious tone. They take sports and try and put humor in it, and if you ask me, they do a great job. Sure, they’re not the most knowledgeable people, or stand up comics by any means, but they do good radio.

Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
