Shanghai Badger -
You think Byrnes is an average defensive left fielder? I’d say he’s well above average, myself.
fair enough
but I’m not sure where you were going with it, anyway. care to elaborate?
by Shanghai Badger on May 18, 2008 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions
A lot of people talk about Soriano's deficiencies on defense.
My contention is that, for a left fielder, he’s above average. Comparing him to players at other positions only goes so far. And there aren’t a lot of spry players at his position.
ok.
again, I wasn’t trying to dump on him—the intent was to point out that we’ve gone from, “Soriano sucks, he’s the worst ever” to instant HOF’er and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

When did Bixler get patient?
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
Yeah. Bixler vs. Wood is just not fair. A pitcher might've had a better shot.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
That looks oddly familiar...
strangely similar to this:
.271/.352/.337
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
Theriot's career line in the minors.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
Yeah. I saw that
but that’s only 280 AB’s, so I went with the career line.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
It's real dangerous combining batting lines from multiple levels of the minors...
...without adjustments. Personally when trying to look at future performance, I throw out anything below AA anyway. (Obviously for players with a track record at AA or higher only.)
I see.
Bixler’s numbers are still really close to what Theriot did at AA and AAA.
Scary.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
Bixler's numbers
are here
The similarities are striking. OTOH, it makes what Theriot is doing so far this year more impressive and more foreboding, all at once.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
So Bixler might get better!
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
Sure.
The other thing I want to point up is that different skills translate to the majors differently.
Here’s a sample set of conversion factors for AAA players:
1B, 2B, 3B, HR, BB, K, SB, CS, OPS
.94, .90, 1.01, .70, .87, 1.20, .75, .95, .86
Those look a little suspect to me, still – the idea that a player’s triples INCREASES when he goes to the majors seems wrong, although maybe that’s an artifact of the huge drop in home runs. Note the substantial increase in strikeout rates and the decrease in walk rates.
Thanks.
I have never seen this before! It’s quite interesting. A prefatory comment before I have really digested all this, though: Bixler and Theriot seem to have roughly the same skill set: little power, lots of SB’s and 1B’s, so one might expect them, base on these conversion rates, to be roughly the same major league player, no? And all of this completely ignores defense, which, and I say this on very limited exposure to Bixler, coupled with Wilson’s injury may be the only thing keeping Bixler up here.

As if we needed evidence
of Duty’s ineptitude, I submit the following:

In case you can’t tell, that is one Adam Dunn attempting a sacrifice bunt with two on, one out and the Reds down by one. Unfortunately, Dunn garnered two strikes and was forced to hit a walkoff, three-run homerun.
Boggles the mind.

Hey, northsider,
you and I should try to get a PBP/color thing going on one of the game threads. It might be fun….

Have Al pass my e-mail along to you and maybe we can figure out a way to set this up. I thin it’d be a hoot.

if there was a streaming audio player on this page and we could connect to it with our microphones and headsets.

I’m wondering If SBNation is set up to do live blogs, though….

Possibly. I see a lot of liveblogs on other, well, blogs.
KSK and FanHouse to name two.

The KSK live blogs are hilarious
Totally NSFW, but hilarious.
Awful Announcing does great live blogs, too.

By the way, gary,
did you see FJM recently?
Joe Morgan: When you have good starters, you always have a chance. Starting pitching is the most important part of your pitching staff. If they can take you deep into a game, it allows your bullpen to settle. I agree with your assessment—they do have a chance over the long haul to improve as a team.”...starting pitching is the most important part of your pitching staff.” See? Joe.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
I didn't see that.
But I’m completely amazed he’s said it twice in one lifetime. At least he said “staff” this time instead of “rotation” which makes it less stupid, but no less tautological.

Exactly.
can you imagine a game called by he and Madden.
John: “The team that score more than the other wins the game.”
Joe: “That’s right, John, in fact, if you can keep the other team from scoring, and scorea few yourself, you generally, most of the time, can usually pull out a win.”
John: “Exactly right, Joe, that’s why I always say the defense is the most important part of the offense.”
(awkward silence)
Joe: “I remember my first game for the Astros, when I broke up Walter Johnson’s no-hitter the day after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor. That’s what really ended the Cold War.”
John: “BOOM!” (intelligible gurgling) See, Bret Favre is like the old Tony Romo….)trails off.

No one listening would have any clue what's going on.
They’d be missing pitches (passes?) left and right, too busy talking about the Big Red Machine and turducken.

Yeah.
They could be calling a shuffleboard game and no one would be the wiser.

I was waiting for that shot from the Bucco troll we had the other day….He played for the Bucs after he left the Cubs and I seem to remember him putting a pretty good hurting on the Cubs in one game…

Wasn't he considered
to be managerial potential at one time?
by Shanghai Badger on May 18, 2008 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions
maybe he still is?
Joe Girardi just took out Wang, who had given up like 6 runs into the 8th, to bring in a reliever to …. intentionally walk the next hitter. The next batter up promptly lined a run-scoring single to RF. Brilliant.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Yeah, that didn't make much sense
Only reason to do that is to make another change if a pinch-hitter comes in—but Castillo wasn’t coming out. Plus, it was already 7-2.

Yeah, Joe is butchering this game.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
I think he still is.
He’s been a bench coach for the Phils and now the Buccos. He may have to do a managerial stinit with a minor league club or two to tighten up the resume, though.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
I can't let this go without quoting it for posterity:
You know what i like about that? He went around the bases. He hit it, then proceeded to go around the bases.– Joe Morgan, on Jose Reyes’ 3-run HR in the 8th inning, 5/18/08
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
You gotta love a player that actually rounds the bases
after he hits a HR. That’s pretty grindy.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
One thing about that old Reds team, they had 25 guys who would round the bases after home run.
Those were the good days, damn it.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Yeah, these new guys just hit Hdance.R and then sit down.
They don’t grind out the trot like they used to do…

Is there any other way to play?
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
"I've never seen a shortstop who couldn't dance."
(highlights of Jeter): look at that. SMOOTH.
(Reyes): boy, he does it different.
“If i had to describe them in football terminology, Jeter is a fullback. He does it with power. Reyes is a tailback.”
Since, you know, this is the most brilliantly clear comparison ever.
Recap:
Joe Morgan’s What Makes a Shortstop
1. Must be able to dance
2. Field with power and toughness, or
3. Field with finesse and speed
(Apparently no attention is paid to the fact that Jeter isn’t even the best SS on his team.)
“One more point I want to make about the SS. I make a point about rhythm and having to be able to dance. When I talk about Yunel Escobar of the Braves it looks like he’s playing shortstop to music. He can dance. I love watching shortstops. They’re all so smooth. Just a tough position to play.”
When Ryan Theriot uncorks throws across the diamond to 1B, it’s just like a dance. I won’t see which one.
Jon talking about emerging SSs in the NL. God please do not mention Ryan Theriot. YES. Crisis averted.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
*won't SAY which one
I’ll leave that to you, fair fellow commenters.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
I suppose if D-Lee can't dig it out
It could be the “Safety Dance”

No, you've got it wrong.
Joe’s probably got into his head that since he knows the necessary tools to be a good shortstop , he could’ve been awesome at that, too.

They're talking about Soriano right now.
Unfortunately no insight from Joe on what parts of his game Soriano learned from/copied. Not the 2nd base part, apparently. Soriano: not a dancer. He’ll hop though.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Checklist:
1. Dance? Check.
2. Power? He runs pretty hard. Check.
3. Finesse? Excuse me, have you seen the hop? Check.
Soriano passes.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
That might be the most inexplicable part
of that comment. Has Joe seen Cory Schlesinger run? It’s not a pretty sight. It’s damn long way from Jeter’s gallop. The man has a mind made of mush.
