Kerry Wood's 20K Game on ESPN Classic
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but for anyone who is interested ESPN Classic is showing Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout game right now. Channel 403 on Comcast in Chicago. Hopefully the Astros will have nearly as much trouble hitting Teddy later....
Anyway I just thought I'd post this now as I am sitting at home and thought I would share for anyone else who is doing likewise. Just showed the first pitch hitting the ump in the face as has been discussed by Al a few weeks ago; also there is hardly anyone at this game- the crowd was just showed on the foul ball.
Don't know the word limit on these, but i will add that the curve Kerry just threw was disgusting, 12-6 and then he follows it up with that ridiculous slurve. And no one has a chance at the 98mph fastball. Not even Jeff bagwell who is a funny name to remember.

This game is both amazing and a tad depressing...
On the one hand, I thoroughly love watching how dominant Wood once was. But on the other hand, it’s a bit depressing thinking about how good he could have been had the injuries not derailed him.

Well
I would take 4-5 years of good closer ability. I have a DVD of that game and love it. His offspeed was amazing and his fastball was crazy.

Where did you get a DVD of that game? I would LOVE to buy a copy!
Thanks!

Try Amazon
Its a case of about 8 or 9 DVDs. Sandberg game, Sosa 61 and 62 and others. Its worth it.

I'd take 4-5 years of closer too...
But that pales in comparison to what could have been were it not for the injuries. Of course, part of what made him so great is what led to the injuries, but it doesn’t change the dream.
I’m definitely glad he’s made it back to being a useful member of the team, though.

Not overlooking what might have been
Just hoping he gives us so consistency is the future. I think its safe to say a lot of people are rooting for him.

That's an excellent set...
... highly recommended.
Perhaps next year there will be a new set out with a championship game added to it.

You can also get the game from iTunes.
Just do a search for “baseball’s best” and you can download it for $1.99.

Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.

Interesting
Watching this game on ESPN Classic, it is really interesting to see Wood sitting in the dugout between innings, holding a towel (filled with ice, I would suspect) around his arm.
Now, I know that we all say that pitching has changed since then (though only 10 years ago), but how did the Cubs NOT know that he was pitching with pain, and therefore ruining his arm? It just seems obvious to me watching this game. Or is it that the cubs just didn’t care as much about player development at the time? Thoughts?

All pitchers do that between innings.
I doubt anyone thought anything of it, nor would they now.

I caught the last inning of it today...
It’s weird seeing how many empty seats there were, especially in the bleachers & the lower sections around the infield. What were the ticket prices in 1998? Had the bleacher tickets made it to double digit prices yet? Was this the season (which had the HR chase & the playoff appearance) that caused the next year’s ticket prices to soar….or was that more from the 2003 season?

I noticed that too!
To be fair, it was a weekday game and it was raining. But yeah, I remember before 1998 it wasn’t hard to get Cub tickets unless you wanted a weekend series versus the Mets or Cardinals.
Times have changed.

I bet attendance was low all over in early 1998
I was pretty young then, but as I recall baseball’s popularity was still reeling from the strike. As the year went on the home run chase brought fans back in force.

Correct on all counts.
I’d have to check when I get home, but ISTR my bleacher ticket in 1998 was $6.
