Minor League Wrap--May 1

Tonight, it's all about protecting sacred cows.  That's right, the secret is out.  If anyone dares criticize a minor league player tonight, I'm going to send Alberto Alburquerque out to your house and T.P. your trees and shrubs.  So don't even think about it, because Al's recovering from arm surgery and is in a nasty mood.

Iowa Cubs

The I-Cubs West Coast miseries continue as the Fresno Grizzlies completed the four-game sweep, defeating the I-Cubs, 8-5.

Mark Holliman struggled badly tonight.  Holliman lasted only three innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks.  Holliman struck out no one.  Andy Cavazos took the loss, allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning by walking two batters.  But the real goat of the night was Carmen Pignatiello, who allowed the two runners he inherited from Cavazos to score and then added two more earned runs of his own in 1.1 innings.  He allowed five hits and his ERA in the PCL is up to 11.05.

Mike Burns was the pitching hero, as he had three scoreless innings of relief.

Second baseman Bobby Scales was the hitting star of the night, coming just a triple short of the cycle.  Scales went 3 for 4 with three RBI.  His home run was his fifth on the season.  Third baseman Casey McGehee went 1 for 4 with a double and two RBI.

Tennessee Smokies

The sun set on the Jacksonville Suns tonight as the Tennessee Smokies blotted out the Suns, 6-0.

This is why people still think Donnie Veal could be something special in the major leagues.  Veal threw seven shutout innings allowing only three hits and three walks.  Veal struck out five.  Veal gets a lot of criticism for not living up to his potential around here and elsewhere, but his record on the season now stands at 2-0 with a 1.82 ERA.  Yes, he's still walking too many and there are some unearned runs in there, but he certainly appears to be taking a step forward this season as opposed to the step backwards he took last year.

Scott Eyre pitched another scoreless inning of relief in a rehab effort.

Third baseman Kyle Reynolds went 2 for 4 with a double.  Left fielder Matt Camp had a 1 for 5 night with a double and two RBI.

Daytona Cubs

Daytona lost to the St. Lucie Mets, 7-3.

Jose Ceda's inconsistencies as a starter continued as he took his first loss of the season with a poor outing.  Ceda allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks in only three innings.  Ceda struck out only two Mets.

Center fielder Jonathan Wyatt went 3 for 5 with an RBI.  Right fielder Jim Adduci went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.  Shortstop Darwin Barney went 2 for 4 and catcher Mark Reed went 3 for 3 with a double.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs announced their big game on July 29th against Kane County at Wrigley Field.  Everyone is overlooking the big thing here:  The ZOOperstars are going to be performing!  They've got to have Harry Canary sing the seventh inning stretch, right?  Clammy Sosa out in right field?

Seriously, seeing the Zooperstars at Wrigley Field is about as close to an acid trip as I'd ever experience.  It's too bad I won't be there.

I didn't realize Veal is nearly 24.

He’d better make a big step forward this year or his ML future prospects are pretty dim.

It's time for Veal to step up

and it would be nice if he could help the big league club as a power lefty from the ‘pen by the end of the year, but I don’t think you want to rush a player with the abilities and troubles he has. At the same time, a lot of lefties are late bloomers.

I agree with your conclusion

but not with your premise. Veal is “nearly 24” in that he’s 23. He doesn’t turn 24 until September, which is after the season is over. That’s not old for AA—in fact, it’s right about average for a prospect.

But he does have to take a step forward because no matter how old he is, he can’t go around spending three years at AA. That’s a red flag for anyone unless there are extenuating circumstances, like getting promoted to AA at 19 or getting injured one season. And even that would be a red flag of a different sort.

The Cubs system is shaping up to be...

.....much more pathetic than even I thought. As of right now, I honestly can’t see any “can’t miss” prospects. Just the slight hope of a couple players. There’s no feel good player or any player just doing great or doing anything overly impressive. Gallagher would be the most optimistic but even him I’m not so sure about. I look at the Cubs system and it’s just blehh.

I look at it and see a lot of potential.

Is there really such a thing as a can’t miss prospect anyway? There are a lot of players to be interested in, at a lot of different positions.

Not a real surprise

Other than Vitters if he develops, the Cubs don’t have any top line prospects. That’s part of the problem in discussing deals for the likes of Santana. In those kinds of deals, quality is more important than quantity.

by rlpete on May 2, 2008 9:08 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The Twins

did not get any “top line prospects” for Johan Santana. The highest ranked prospect by Baseball America that the Twins got for Santana was Deolis Guerra, who was ranked #35 by them and has still never pitched above the Florida State League (and I think is overrated). The second, Carlos Gomez, was ranked #52.

We had a big blue chip prospect to deal this off-season: his name was Geovany Soto, who was ranked higher than Gomez. If we were willing to trade him, I’m sure we could have gotten in the deals for Santana or Bedard.

It’s funny that even though the Cubs farm system has finally produced what looks like a all-star quality position player, they’re continuing to get ripped. Did anyone think Soto was a “can’t miss” prospect at this time last season? If anyone says they did, they’re lying. Same with Kevin Hart. There are a lot of guys out there who could emerge this season too.

The Cubs farm system is definitely not one of the better ones in the game right now. BA ranked it at #20 this off-season. Not good, but “bottom middle.” (The Mets who pulled off the Santana trade were #17—these rankings were done before the Santana trade. The Cubs certainly moved up to #19 after the Santana trade as the Mets dropped.) But pie’s assessment of the system as “pathetic” is just more ignorant hyperbole.

You are right on Soto

I pulled him out of the equation. He could have gotten one of those guys and last winter when posters here were clamoring for Santana, I asked if they would part with Soto as that might be what it takes.

I agree the Cubs system isn’t pathetic but it is middle of the pack at best as you state. The problem right now after the Soto promotion is there aren’t any obvious high ceiling prospects other than the unproven Vitters. That’s probably the big knock on the system right now.

Last year’s draft strategy appeared to focus on depth as other than Vitters most of the top picks were college guys. You rarely get top prospects from the college ranks after the first couple of rounds.

Tony Thomas

is a high ceiling guy. He’s got a ways to go to get there, though.

What we don’t have, now that Soto is in the majors, is a guy like Jay Bruce or Colby Rasmus who is highly-touted and ready to go or a guy who makes all the scouts drool like Cameron Maybin. Or someone like Evan Longoria or Joey Votto before they got called up. The thing is, most farm systems don’t have guys like that. (OK, the Reds and the Rays have multiple ones. That’s what you get for picking early in the draft year after year.)

Ceda

I’m not a talent evaluator or a MLB scout but only someone who has been around the game my entire life and consider myself to have a better eye or a better judge of baseball talent than your average fan and as I said back in the beginning of Spring Training when I saw Ceda 3 or 4 times, I just didn’t see anything other than his fastball, that impressed me. Even that he couldn’t locate. His delivery was loose and his RP was erratic and as I said then, he reminded me of a young Robert Novoa. I hope I’m wrong about this kid, because if he could ever put it together, he could be a good bullpen pitcher but I could see how the Padres gave up on him for Todd Walker.

Zooperstars!

They are hilarious. Kids love them.

I'm not knocking the ZOOperstars!

I just find the idea of doing their schtick at Wrigley makes them even more bizarre. They’re already a little wacky-looking.

No one caught it

I wrote that the Grizzlies had a three game sweep of the I-Cubs. It was a four game sweep. It’s been corrected.

Let’s hope Sacramento goes better.

Good stuff Josh

I’d insult you and your opinions like you so routinely do to others when they express an opinion on this site that does not agree with yours, but then you’d whine and proclaim how you’re done with the board and hold your breath until a couple people feel sorry for you and take your hand from your nose and say “ohhh don’t leave us Josh….you’re the greatest thing this board has ever seen Josh”....you say you can’t handle childish actions of others, even though you’re the one more than half the time instigating situations, such as this one for calling my opinion “ignorant hyperbole”. (Even though I’m not the one saying this system isn’t pathetic because it appears they finally might have a positional player become an All Star in Soto, since what…Joe Girardi????) Also FWIW, I don’t even read your reports because I look at the box scores and other websites for my Minor League fix, so by the time you post yours, I already know what’s going on for that day in the system, if you know what I mean…............ The Cubs system before the season started was ranked by many as middle of the pack and has only declined since the start of the season, so I am not the only one who thinks the Cubs system is worse than previously thought..
