But I disagree he is still on an absolute tear.
"This is an environment of welcoming, and you should just get the hell outta here." --Michael Scott
Sori Is Good
But not great. Career OBP (incl. when leading off) too low for an effective leadoff hitter.
In a perfect
world I tend to agree with you. But look at this way: He’s really only a leadoff hitter one time per game. Other than that don’t you want him to be in one of the first three spots as one of your best hitters getting many AB’s? He really doesn’t fit the roles of a 2 or 3 hole hitter either, so what, you drop him to 5 or 6 make him lose AB’s? I dunno, I’ll go with Lou on this one.
I See Your Point
But to me it’s a matter of having your higher OBP guys batting ahead of your best power hitters from start to finish. So if there’s an option to move someone with a higher on base pct than Sori into Sori’s leadoff spot it should be done. Rolling the dice and hoping for “good Sori” is too risky to expect the offense to be as functional as it could be.
Again..
I tend to agree with you. But so far it’s hard to argue that Lou hasn’t put together a productive offense.
Keeping My Fingers Crossed
It’s possible that the overall improvement may outweigh Sori’s streakiness…anyway I sure hope so!
The catcher set up low and away...
Brocail missed his spot by a foot and a half and Soriano still swung. Sooooooooooooo streaky!
Well, there's still outs..

The Strike Zone is defined as that area over homeplate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the hollow beneath the kneecap. The Strike Zone shall be determined from the batter’s stance as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball.

Adding knowledge and challenging the saber-magicians, one post at a time.
I would love nothing more...
...than the Padres to score 10 runs against the Cards and smoke em’ out. I live in So. IL so all I get ALL the time are the f’ing cards games.
Pads would need a miracle to score 10 runs!
Hey, it's a new century!

In the series?

Lou Is Too Matchup Happy Sometimes
That’s the only reason I can think of as far as why Fontenot batted against Valverde. The “lefty-righty” matchup thing is more than a little overrated.
For those who care..
...Padres have 1st and 3rd no out against the Cards. Let’s rough em up here!!!! Ok I promise no more updates.
nothing wrong with
more updates.

Made more contact than Soriano tonight.

bad game all around. rebound on the morrow. step on their necks and all that jazz.
Peace out fools, thanks for making it fun.
cmon!
even I gotta admit the guys had a great run. He is not gonna carry us every night…..geeeeeeeeeeeeeez!
Love the name!!
Do you own a muffin shop?

or fix mufflers?

really bad offense tonight
where was the patience, two walks and astros pitchers threw only 109 pitches the entire night!!
Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living."
Starter, maybe. Lets see what happens after the next 2 rounds.
CF, once again, wait and see if Jimmy pans out. I am not gonna argue though that I wouldn’t want Crawford to play RF and Dome in CF, but let’s see what happens. I like our bench though.
at this point
nothing. Losing one game to Houston isn’t exactly the end of the world.

That's asking the wrong question.
The first thing you have to do right now is figure out which teams are going to be out of it. Then you have to figure which of them will realize that and sell. So it’s 50% projection, 50% psychoanalysis of the GM at this point. Then you look over what’s available, what the Cubs might want out of what’s available, and whether or not they have the trading chips to get that, as well as chips that match up well with the needs of the organization.
I thought you just hit the trade button?
And made it happen. Will be interesting to see who’s dealing who, for sure. Not sure any marquee guys will be out there.
"This is the kind of thing … that makes you want to see the Chicago Cubs team lose." Marty Brennaman
About the only top-shelf pitcher you could see would be Burnett...
...MAYBE Chris Young, but I think he’s overrated anyway.
As far as position players, who knows. The Padres are the only team that has really thrown in the towel yet, and with a soft wild card in the NL (so far, at least) a lot of teams might hang in there longer than they probably should.
I should go ahead and add that the Cubs are very limited...
...in where they can plug in upgrades. The only positions where they can realistically upgrade are up the middle—SS, CF and 2B. Salary concerns if nothing else preclude upgrades at the corners.
The Cubs also have a very limited conception of the sort of player who can help them of offense – lefty, probably a middle of the order sort. And most of those guys, guess what, play the corners.
Now, if Reedmonds doesn’t work out (and that seems possible if not likely) and Pie isn’t tearing up AAA, Hendry is likely to try to do something about CF. But other than that, nothing’s certain.
I think so.
Who did Cedeno hit his GS off of?

No, a Cub pitcher giving up a grand slam, not a hitter hitting one.

yes, I know
I’m also asking about 1Dec’s GS.

Escaino
Wasn`t Marmolish tonight but got the job done and saved our bullpen for the rest of this roadtrip. A fresh bullpen = WINS!!!
he did, I thought he did pretty well.
and Marmol and Wood both got to sit too. That bodes well for tomorrow.
