Milo
was there when radio started..
"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." - Jacque Barzun
He got around...
Used to do radio for the Pirates when I was a kid. “Lanny & Milo”. (Lanny Frattare) Milo was actually pretty decent back then.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Was Bob Prince
around then too?
"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." - Jacque Barzun
Bob Prince & Nellie King...
Bob Prince did radio for the Pirates from 1948-1975 with a variety of partners, including two years (55-56) by himself. Then Lanny & Milo took over and a few others after that until Prince came back for a swan song in 1985.
Prince & King was the team I remember most (1967-1975). Many a night I snuck a transistor radio under the pillow after ‘Lights out!’ so I could listen to Prince & King on “KDKA Pittsburgh,1020”. Ah, those were the days…
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Did that too..
Prince was good…..KDKA must have had a strong signal…

What a stupid thing to say
I guess Mark Belanger would have no place on your team, huh?
And after all of four games, we render judgment on Edmonds?
Good heavens, folks …
by Not Bruce Froemming on May 21, 2008 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions
Please.
We have three seasons of declining production prior to this year and his abysmal performance to start the season in San Diego to look at, in addition to four games with the Cubs. Swapping laundry is unlikely to change the way Edmonds plays – we know that ballplayers tend to decline in their later years, and we have a ton of evidence that Edmonds is in decline.
This isn’t some rook with a minor league track record, or a veteran that’s simply had a few bad games in a row. This is a guy we picked up off the scrap heap after getting released. We can look at his record over the past few seasons. We can look at the typical aging patterns of major league players.
If people were calling him washed up based upon only these four games, they’d be wrong. But in the context of his past performances, it’s not an invalid conclusion.
That might very well be the case
And it wouldn’t shock me if, after 2-3 weeks, that’s the way it panned out.
I think after four games, however, it’s a little hasty to do that. Otherwise, why sign him in the first place? But that’s another issue.

And as you see tonight,

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Let me be clear, I don't like having Fontenot around in particular.
But seriously, Hoffpaiur doesn’t bring anything to the table that Ward doesn’t. Since we’re committing to carrying 12 pitchers, we need to get as much out of the bench as possible. Having two guys who can only play the least challenging defensive positions really shorts the bench even futher.
A couple of wide loads like Ward and Hoffpauir
would ‘short’ any bench… ;-)

alright. shake it off
We’re 9 games over .500, and even if the Cards win, we’re still in first place. We own the Pirates. We’ll get back those losses.
2008: The year we put it all together.
Day off tomorrow
we need a break – bring on the Pirates!!!!

Night guys
Bugger. I need sleep.
Cubs cocktail: Add equal amounts of devotion and stubbornness over ice, stir and serve.
Teams that win big at home and scuffle on the road
generally have a mental toughness issue. It also seems like we get awfully impatient with our at bats on the road. I would bet that the walks drawn number on the road is several lower than home games. My guess is this lack of toughness is Lou’s next “project”.
certainly
there were few walks tonight.

Sucks To Lose
However we’re heading to Pittsburgh, and the lack of patience seems to be more a “bad habit” thing than turning back into pumpkins. Establishing a winning road record would sure allay a lot of my concerns!
Yep, if we can start winning in strings of a couple in a row on the road
I would say we’d be on the cusp of stating our case for the long haul. We’ve got to start pitching better with the lead as well. We need a little more sack from the starters collectively than we’ve seen when the bags fill up.
Anyone watching the Cards game?
Pujols lined one off Chris Youngs HEAD and then when sliding home, Pujols took out the catcher with what looked like a broken ankle. The entire battery out in three plays by one guy. Ouch.
My $.02 on the Cubs
1. 30% of the Cubs home schedule will be done as of the end of the month.
They will HAVE to learn how to win series against Central rivals if they want to repeat as Champs.
2. Another week of Edmonds, and I think it will be enough. Gimme Reed, and screw the platoon until Pie discovers “Bat, meet ball.”
3. Mr. Gallagher = Welcome to the Majors! The Astros are not the Lansing Lugnuts.
4. Soriano – we want the “good” streak, again.
5. Still in first (barely), and Z meets the Pirates to start the weekend. Maybe, MAYBE the team can win 2 of 3 in Pitt for a coveted .500 road trip?
oh, come on.
Still in first.
Nine games over .500.
Off to beat the tar out of the Pirates.
This is NOT the 2006 team.

I stayed away from the game thread tonight
because I was afraid I’d see stuff like this.
Good God, people, have some perspective.

Same Crap
These are our road loses on the season this year.
5-3
4-2
9-0
5-3
5-3
5-3
2-0
5-3
4-2
7-1
5-3
We just don’t pitch or hit the same on the road. We either need the pitching to allow 2 runs or less, or score 5-6 runs a game more often on the road. The key of playing better on the road is a litlte of both. But on the road were getting the same the pitching gives up 5-6 runs and we can only score 2-3. It’s happen in what 8 of our road loses now. This needs to change and soon, if this team is going to win the division this year. I’m sick of playing like crap on the road, falling out of first, then have to go home and play great baseball to turn things around.
Did they fall out of first tonight?
I didn’t realize that.
And has it happened a lot this year? I didn’t think so.

Still
have a one game lead on the Cards and 1 and half on Astros.
Well, St Louis ain't going away any time soon
I agree their pitching is going to level off but their hitting isn’t and they seem to pound on teams once they get the lead. This will be a race and we can’t have dopey rookies hanging curveballs to the best hitters in the game. We have to start winning some of these road series before it creeps into our psyche. Starting palying with some more life and SWEEP PITTSBURGH!
What hitting?
They’re 10th in NL batting. They’re behind the Cubs,Pittsburgh and Houston in the NL Central. You get past AP and Ludwick, (who will level off eventually) I don’t see much else.

Has anybody ever considered
that maybe, just maybe, the Astros pitched pretty well the past two days?
Chacon was dealing after the first couple of innings. The ball looked like it was falling off a table. And Sampson has the Cubs’ number, no doubt about it.
Instead of every loss being the Cubs’ fault, maybe we should acknowledge other teams have some good performances sometimes, too.

Fair point
And in reality, it’s probably a combination of both. At least it’s not like we were blown out in the games we lost.

There is no question....
...the Stros outpitched the Cubs in games 2 and 3.
That happens sometimes.
