Basically
We haven’t seen enough, Lou is going to give him a chance, Pie’s getting everyday work in AAA, etc, etc
Pie's numbers in AAA
are terrible. Edmonds has barely played. He’s staying put. Frankly, he’s not the problem right now, as with the exception of Friday, the bats have been pretty silent this trip and the pitching has been just above average.

The first-place Cards
is a good estimation, as the Dodgers can’t hit anything right now. They have been completely shut down by Cardinal pitching. L-A throwing a rookie out there today on the mound isn’t going to help the situation.
I hope the Dodgers’ struggles continues into Wrigley tomorrow, because it sure doesn’t seem as if the Cubs have gotten a break in days. Unfortunately, none seem to be coming today, and I sure hope the blown HR call doesn’t ruin this game.
However, I suspect it will. Too bad.

being realistic….this road trip has been less than stellar. The Bucs - take out their games against us, they look pretty good - way better than the Brewers, for example. Just as the Cubs have to win some games against the Marlins, the Bucs have to come up with a win or two against us.

Not really....
I’m pretty sure (albeit without research) that the home team wins more than the road team does in MLB. So, if your the road team winning half your games, that means your playing better than the average team does on the road.

Interesting thing just happened in the Yankees game
They were down 3 going into the 8th and scored 4 to take the lead by 1.
Because Rivera wasn’t up and ready to go (due to the score), Girardi put in a pitcher (can’t recall who), allowed him to warm up and then removed him from the game before the first pitch was thrown.
I know you can’t compel him to make the guy who started the inning pitch, but a little annoying from a fan and a “speed up the game” perspective.

You know the answer, but I’ll bite. It’s how you position your body, use the glove to shield the sun. All sorts of ballplayers can make this play, but you want to give Soriano a pass. Fine. Regardless, he should have made the play. I’m betting Johnson, Pie, Edmonds, DeRosa, Murton all make that catch.

I don’t read lips and I don’t speak Spanish, but it sure looked like Soriano was cursing the sun. He kept looking up into the sky and was muttering something…
meanwhile my fiancee is yelling over the phone – “flip your flipping sunglasses down!!!!”
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Were the really not down?
I was too busy puking to notice.

yeah, on the replay it looks like there's something shiny across his face, so I'd assume they were down.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Pat was pretty adamant he lost it in the sun...
...still hard to justify, that’s what a hat and sunglasses are for.
Its mindmubing this has happened two days in a row. A victory in hand, choked up..

Lots of people are criticizing Soriano’s play. Most of us recognize that he’s not a great defensive player.
However, wishing injury on a player should NEVER be tolerated—ESPECIALLY when it’s one of YOUR players!

I would be more charitable to Sori if he were more self-critical
and would say after today’s game: “I have to work more on my defense.” Instead, he always insists that everything’s OK, etc., etc.
Yeah... I don't buy that he is a clubhouse cancer

Lou is going to have to address,
the situation with Soriano, and maybe Theriot, soon. He will have to make a decision on whether he can take a chance with those guys on defense in close games in the later innings.
These are the kind of games the Cubs have been known for blowing for years now – especially in postseason games.
Lou has to make changes to deal with this now early in the season so it doesn’t become a problem in August and September, as well as the postseason.

Be interesting to see how the brass handles this...
There needs to be a coming to Jesus meeting. This team is good and should have the ability to go a long way, but people need to start performing now. If we hadn’t played the Pirates a bunch of times already, we would be a middle of the pack team.
Soriano isn’t going anywhere, but something needs to be done to shake these guys up.
In the middle of a good time, Truth gave me her icy kiss. Look around, you must be joking. All that way, all that way for this -Oysterband
Soriano...
Doesn’t matter if anyone on the team claims that it was a “team” loss. Soriano lost it for us PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!!
"Hey-Hey! Home Run! Attaboy Ronnie!" ~ Jack Brickhouse
Well, I just consider this
a bad trip, not a “come to Jesus” session. Save for Friday, this team isn’t hitting. Errors happen, and today (and Saturday) they came at the worst possible times. However, this team isn’t as good, nor as bad as they look at times. What is really a concern, to me is two road trips away - Toronto, and Tampa Bay. 2 Domes, (roof could be shut in Toronto) and this franchise has historically performed terribly in indoor stadiums - I don’t care the era, i don’t care who the players are.
Of course, the Cubs perform terribly IN San Diego whether it be 1884 or 2007. That’s part of the next trip.
Greg Maddux, FYI is getting hammered as I write this by the Reds. Maybe he’d be useful in Chicago, I am now not sure. But—another bat and another starter would go a long way toward solidifying this team.
This trip was a ‘team’ loss - poor performances at all levels. The errors just made 2 losses more heartbreaking. Wood has to stop hitting batters - that stat is just amazing.
But, all have done just enough to LOSE games. Lilly has had a great month, but regressed. Middle relief turned average this trip.
Sori’s gonna be here a while. No reason to dump everything on him.
by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on May 25, 2008 4:14 PM CDT reply actions
Agree with you
we aren’t getting blown out of games on the road, we battle back, then give it back by poor fielding/pitching. That’s why it’s harder to take because we take the lead only to piss it away.
We still have a lot of baseball to play, and to see who are still hanging around when it’s crunch time late in the season. Central division is turning out to be one black and blue division.

June could be a scary month
only 10 home games.
"WGN, Channel 9 Cubs Baseball, Excitingly, Importantly, Dramatically Yours." - Jack Brickhouse
Ready to play Go Cubs Go and sadly watched Soriano's dropped fly ball in left!
When he’s hot he’s hot when he’s not he’s not.
And, I might add
That trip from Toronto to Tampa Bay is halted by the stupid “Hall Of Fame” game v. the Padres on Monday, June 16th. No days off from the 10th to the 23rd. I’d ship all of Iowa to Cooperstown to play that meaningless, stupid game. This game should be part of the pre-season. They don’t have to play a meaningless game during induction ceremonies. If there is going to be a damn game, make it count. Somebody has to give up a home date and be compensated for it.
And—after TB, it’s the ChiSox. They are no push-over this season.
If the Cubs can play .500 ball in the month of June - I consider it fortunate. If they can play above that, it would be fantastic. June is going to be a very challenging month, and we’ll know way more about this team by July 1 - contenders or pretenders.

not a "come to Jesus" session
What does this mean? I’m Jewish.
I have been a Lou fan.
Wanted him to sign badly. Feel he is a wonderful manager.
However, it is games like these, letting his stubbornness get in the way of decisions that are best for the team, that tarnish his image, to me.
I can guarantee you, and it pains me to say this, Tony LaRussa in the same situation, would act differently. He is as good as it gets in baseball and his record shows it. This year is his personal coup de gras.
Just an old expression
from the ‘tent revivals’ of the turn of the 20th Century. Preachers would set up tents, pleading for people to come and be ‘saved.’ (I guess televangelists are the 21st Century version) In this context, we’d be talking about a team meeting to ‘keep the spirits up.’
However, I don’t think that tactic motivates the modern ballplayer any more. In any event, the culture change with the Cubs needs to continue on, without hesitation.
I don’t exactly believeTony LaRussa is doing anything differently. He’s getting good performances from discarded ballplayers. (And, another fine season from you-know-who.) In fact, the Cardinals remind me of the Padres of the past three years, paying little but getting a great return—well more than the stats suggest. However, the Padres are now taking it in the chin for years of shopping at the dollar store.
The Cardinals are currently doing the same thing, and experiencing some of the same good fortune that the Padres did. I’m more concerned by the Astros, as they have blended some good young talent with what is looking to be monster seasons from Tejada and Berkman.
Dave Duncan isn’t a ’ genius’—Todd Wellemeyer isn’t a star. He’s a journeyman who has gotten lucky, for once in his career.
