Hiroki Kuroda vs Sean Gallagher

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing in from center field at 10-20 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 55.

Complete Coverage >

Yesterday: summer, 82 degrees, humid. Today, cold, windy, temperatures likely in the 40's. Don'tcha just love Chicago weather?

Today's Baseball Prospectus preview ($) notes that Kosuke Fukudome will be facing a countryman for the first time, and that:
So far this season, Japanese major league batters are just 1-for-13 with five walks against Japanese pitchers. Fukudome would love to get a hit against anyone right now, Japanese or no, as he has slumped to .256/.354/.329 in 97 PA since the start of May after hitting .327/.436/.480 in 117 April plate appearances.

True. If Dome could start hitting, maybe Lou would drop his unhealthy obsession with getting that "lefty power bat", since the team is winning anyway.

Hiroki Kuroda is someone the Cubs scouted and considered signing a year ago, and some of you, I know, wanted him signed this past offseason. He's been decent, not great, so far in his ten major league starts.

Sean Gallagher has had two mediocre starts and one good one. He'd better start throwing more consistently or he's going to find himself back at Iowa. He has never started against the Dodgers, but had a poor relief appearance against them last September 3 at Wrigley Field, the day Carlos Zambrano melted down and dissed fans who were booing him.

Today's game is on ESPN, for those outside of Chicago, and on CSN Chicago, if you are in the Cubs' "territory". Also see today's MLB.com Mediacenter.

has an interesting article about Kuroda getting re-acquainted with his old friend and former teammate in Japan—Alfonso Soriano.

Fukudome and Kuroda were teammates on the 2004 Olympic team.

Lieber 2nd Chance Start?

If Gallagher does not pitch well tonight, would Lieber be the logical choice to fill in the 5th starter role? Of course, Lieber got lit up in his first start this season. Lieber does have tons of experience as a starter. I still think he can pitch well enough starting games to have a respectable record and a sub-4.50 ERA. He does not have to return to his 2001 form to be an “adequate” 5th starter.

by memphiscub on May 27, 2008 3:41 PM CDT reply actions

It's possible...

Since Marshall and Hill are both on the DL, it would seem that Lieber would be the logical choice. If Gallagher really bombs, then they’ll probably send him back down for more seasoning.

There's always

Kevin Hart too. And Donnie Veal is not out of the realm of possibilities.

Randy Wells could make a start or two too. Hard to argue with his Major league lifetime ERA, which is 0.00. :-)

Piniella said he would have at least two more starts, so thats tonight and against the Rockies. If he struggles bad in these two games, I think Lieber will get another shot.

Wow, 2nd. How about that?

Anyways, here’s a general comment: As a life-long Cubs fan, I’d have to say this group looks like another third-place team to me, which belies the current record. My primary reasoning is that they have feasted on weak competition to date and have done so without having to deal with injuries or any other unexpected hurdles. Furthermore, the club has major question marks as far as player personnel goes in the starting rotation and across the outfield. They have been fortunate to get enough hot bats going early in combination with exceptional middle relief, applied liberally, to grab the number of wins they have already. I’d say they need to get the starting five figured out in a hurry, along with a regular starting nine, in order to forge an identity to carry throughout the summer. That means bring on the call-ups and find what sticks.

Go Cubs,
Jeremy

by Jerry Mumphrey on May 27, 2008 3:43 PM CDT reply actions

i don't know about weak competition

yes, we all know they have beat up on the Pirates this year but they did sweep the Diamondbacks and Mets (never easy games, slow start or not). We’re 4-4 against the East and 8-2 against the West. And hey, all teams have question marks… i think of all the teams in the NL central, we have the easiest to deal with.

by RMRZisMYmanCRUSH on May 27, 2008 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

no injuries and no hurdles?

Soriano was out 2 weeks, I’d call that an injury. Pie not hitting big league pitching as needed, I’d call that a hurdle.

How about

Hill and Howry not pitching up to expectations and Eyre being out most of April and May, those would be a hurdles too.

Plus, every one knocks the Pirates as weak competition, but they do have an above .500 record against all teams that are not the Cubs.

by drewishdrewid on May 27, 2008 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Not completely off base but...

you say they have had no unexpected hurdles but then go on to mention the rotation. Did you really think Rich Hill would be sent down in May when the season started. I don’t think anyone expected that. Also, Ramirez, Soriano and Ward have all had injuries so far. Like Al has mentioned many times before, good teams beat bad teams alot. 9-3 against Pittsburgh is a good record no matter how bad they are. If the Cubs were mediocre I would expect them to only be 7-5 or 8-4 at best against the Pirates. As far as the outfield goes, Soriano and Fukudome are not question marks (or at least not anymore than any other player). CF has a couple of decent options in Johnson and Pie and some shifting could be made with Fukudome.

Step away from the ledge. This thing is practically in the bag.

Who the heck

is not “weak comptetiton” in the National League? Arizona? We swept them and they’ve struggled outside of the NL West, which is a pathetic division right now. St. Louis and Houston? We’re ahead of them—and St. Louis has had an even weaker schedule. (Not sure on the Astros.)

Third freaking place? Behind who?

This kind of comment is not seeing the big picture. There are a lot more bad teams in the NL than good one. Heck, that’s true of the AL this season too.

The Cubs are as good as any team in baseball right now. Sure, if you put them up against the Braves or Yankee teams of the 90’s, there would be trouble. But those teams are long gone.

Do you have any references to your simulation algorithm?

What are you basically doing? And how are you doing it? And why should we trust you? I’m not being critical, just interested in all kinds of methods people use to simulate a baseball game.

by zevkalman on May 27, 2008 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Track Record

I have a two year track record. The simulation predicted last year (before the season started and it’s documented in an old blog entry) that the Red Sox would beat the Cubs in the World Series last year. Well, it got half of it right anyways. :) As far as the algorithms used, yes it uses advanced sabemetrical algorithms. It borrows from many of the sabermetric algorithms developed by many of the top sabermetricians in the industry (ie – TangoTiger, The Book) and has improved upon some of the algorithms used by SBS-Baseball. It takes into consideration such things as, park factors, splits, pitch counts/tired pitchers, base advancement/speed and an engine to determine when to replace a pitcher based on how many pitches/how tired they are and what the leverage index is. It has an engine for determining/adjusting a hitters spectrum of likely outcomes based on the pitcher he is facing. You can also do such things as start a game that is already in progress. If the Dodgers and Cubs are tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th inning I could determine the win expectancy based on which actual players are in the game, not on the history of all games since 1982. It’s free to download at the link above. It can be setup to use any projection method for data input, including Zips, Chone, Marcel, Pecota, 2008 stats or any method you’d like. The accuracy really comes from the projections used at this point. There are a couple of things that I am working to improve like defense, weather effects and a search for the most accurate park effects numbers available. Thanks for the question. Let me know if you need more clarifications.

Fontenot's DL stint

Being out of town on VaCa recently, apparently I missed this, but ChicagoSports.com mentioned that Fontenot was placed on the DL retroactive to May 12th, is that who Hoffpauir replaced when he was called up?? And I’m guessing that we had to make a move today if he is in the starting lineup. Who did we send down?

The guy who was sent down with ulnar neuritis is Chad Fox. He was the one that was DLed retroactive to May 12. I’m not sure how Chicagosports screwed this up. But Fontenot wasn’t on the DL, so no roster changes were made today.

Fontenot hasn't been on the DL...

Ward was sent down when Hoffpauir was called up.

Moreover, it couldn’t be the case that Fontenot was DLed retroactive to May 12, as he’s played in at least four games since then.

Hmmm...

I’m sure someone here could tell you the probability of D-Lee drawing the 3 spot 155 times a year…

But I agree about his curious decisions sometimes. Although, as SC stated somewhere above, lineups have a marginal impact on the game, and are often exaggerated. Well, maybe not marginal, but certainly not a large impact.

he plays around with the lineups. DeRosa did very well in the 8-spot (although I do question the wisdom of benching a guy who is hitting the way he is, but maybe he asked for the rest).

by dbaltman on May 27, 2008 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Gallagher

Based on the two games I’ve watched him throw, Gallagher looks pretty good the first time through the order, and then tends to have one bad inning around the 4th or 5th. Any thoughts on whether this is (a) him starting to tire; or (b) major league hitters who have never faced him before having a much better at-bat the second time through the lineup?

Either way, its clear (to me at least) he’s got the stuff to succeed at this level, and he does not seem to be the type to back down and walk guys out of fear of what they’ll do if he throws strikes.

Berman's gonna cry....

....about how bad Edmonds is now. He just really feels for the guy. LOL.

Strikeouts are boring - besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls. More democratic. ---Crash Davis

I am sure the Cubs would be happy to

have Edmonds carry Berman’s bag after tonight.

THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!

un oh a-rod homered

expect a yankees update in the next inning

by grifdog on May 27, 2008 7:20 PM CDT reply actions

They'll probably break away for only about 4-5 innings.

So we can see it from all angles, including him getting high fives in the dugout.

Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, whadya say? The Cubs are going to win today!

Berman...

...sounds like he’s describing my grandpa’s last softball game before he hung them up.

I think you have to realize that ESPN...

...is targeting casual fans that may not care much (if any) about the Dodgers and Cubs at all.

The bright side: being on ESPN this often means we’re doing something right.

It's the sort of inferiority complex that I expect of Brewers fans.

Cubs just take care of business, and it’ll be other teams’ fans bitching about the nightly Soto update.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

They aren't that bad except...

there are 9 other MLB games being played and so far we have 1 White Sox/Indians and 2 Yanks/O’s updates

by smmcctrk on May 27, 2008 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe this is

one of those games where we hit the hell out of the ball in the 8th inning.

by sue369 on May 27, 2008 7:26 PM CDT reply actions

you were off by one inning!

is that really the ROY candidates so far?

Soto wins between Jurrjens, Dome, Votto, and DeWitt pretty easily imo.

Meanwhile one of the bad guys, Carlos Quentin, just fouled one off at the plate

wow – a strike, a hit, and a ball, all on one pitch. Sounds cryptic but I bet the guys out there are wincing and squirming in their seats as they have probably been there one time or another.

Meanwhile, the camera zooms in on him adjusting himself. Thankfully I have the sound down so I have no idea what Vulture is saying…

Oh sure...

Ty Wiggington gets an RBI groundout…but that’s not good enough for an update…

I though there was going to be a series of fundamental clinics in ST this year. For example, BUNTING.
