Overflow Thread 2: Cubs vs. Dodgers, Tuesday 5/27, 6:05 CT

The overflow thread is getting really slow....... One more inning to go. White Castle worked his way out of that jam. Your FanPost must be at least 75 words long. Right now it's only 21 words long. If you just have a quote, link, video or photo you'd like to share with the community, try creating a FanShot instead. So I need more words... Go Cubs go! Maybe this is enough. Now it is....

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

by grifdog on May 27, 2008 8:53 PM CDT reply actions

Hmmmmm

Maybe its a good idea to hit The Riot ahead of Soriano? Radical thought, I know.

by dbaltman on May 27, 2008 8:54 PM CDT reply actions

That's why you bat him ninth.

The Brewers have stopped doing it, probably because Ned Yost is afraid for his job.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess

I was trying to say Soriano should always have someone batting ahead of him and I think that Riot is a good candidate for the leadoff spot. It seems like he does a good job of taking pitches.

I know our pitchers are hitting well, but I don’t think we want to start moving them up in the lineup justyet.

There’s absolutely no rule that requires a club to have a closer.

We’re going to, because Lou is in lockstep with every manager in MLB in assuming that every relief pitcher has to be used the same way that Tony LaRusa did it with the A’s.

We scored three, so I think team LOB would be 11.

And it’s hard to control how well you hit with runners on – it’s a flukey sort of thing. You focus on getting as many opportunities as possible to bat with runners on – i.e., getting runners on – and you’ll win games.

cwyers buddy

can you keep up the post game updates..? I f you don’t mind

by TheRamZamDLEE on May 27, 2008 9:23 PM CDT reply actions

Not a problem.

This is my favorite part of having games on CSN – getting the postgame interviews. And again, I’m really interested in hearing what Robothol has to say.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not Plesac's biggest detractor...

...and I don’t outright hate him, but he’s not my favorite person. Normally I shut it off after the pticher’s postgame.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions

just curious, I dont mind him

...but I am not sure I would notice if he was replaced

Felix Pie must play everyday!

by JB 23 on May 27, 2008 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, the comments he just made about Pie are a perfect example.

He says that he’d trust Edmonds rather than Pie against a good pitcher in a key spot. Because Edmonds is a veteran. Of course, if you look at what they’ve actually done so far this season, that’s just ridiculous.

Most of what he says is either:

A) Obvious.

or

B) Wrong.

And so I don’t really feel the need to have him talk all that often. Marmol’s been overworked? Really, Dan? That’s must-watch TV there.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

lol!

Plesiac is why God invented the mute button. I’ve never been so relieved to have spring training be over…

worse than Plesac

is enduring the 6th inning tonight on radio. Cubs have 2 on one out in a 1-0 game…....but no mention of those facts for we that had just tuned in. The action on the field was secondary to listening to Tommy Lasorda babble on about how the game used to be. It was maddening

by plenz on May 27, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

they did the same thing

yesterday I think it was….......Fergie on the radio and the game was secondary. They really need to cut the guest crap out and let us know what the hell is going on

by plenz on May 27, 2008 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

at least Fergie was watching the game yesterday.

I heard him say something to the effect of “is Soriano hurt? he’s not running so good out there.” as Soriano made a play in the field. So kudos to him for that.

Of course, this is something he probably should have been aware of a long time ago like anyone else, but maybe he doesn’t follow local media much.

and he’s probably the better for that…

by ballhawk on May 27, 2008 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah....

I caught that too. Was on my way home and caught him on radio….....the whole inning was banter back and forth between him and Ron. It’s just frustrating when 3 or four pitches happen and there is no mention of the count, etc. I literally could hear the ball being hit….....foul balls apparantly…......and finally Pat lets us know the count is 2-2.

by plenz on May 27, 2008 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

but....as it turned out

Edmoonds was up in the 6th so I guess no need to broadcast…......just say “2 outs”

Sabermetricians often scoff at the notion of chemistry, contending that numerical barometers of performance matter most. Such an argument is not without merit. But at this moment in the game’s history — when Major League Baseball is attracting players from all over the world — chemistry is more important and elusive than many teams understand.

by ballhawk on May 27, 2008 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Rosenthal is as friendly a national reporter to sabermetrics as you'll find.

And, really, I don’t need reporters to be analysts; there are a lot of good analysts out there, and only a few good reporters. (Anyone who can think and is willing to go where the facts take them can be an analyst, especially in the age of home computers; you need a lot of time invested and a big Rolodex to be a good reporter.)

As far as chemistry – there was a real good discussion on it over on Tango’s site a while back. (Read the linked USS Mariner article if you have time.)

Sox apparently lost as Burhle got shelled.

True fact – Carlos Quentin’s OPS+ is equal to any two OPS+s of the following:

Konerko
Swisher
Uribe
Cabrera

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

Jeez can you imagine how good the D-backs would be if they

held on to Quentin and let Byrnes go. Thank you Kenny Williams.

by TheRamZamDLEE on May 27, 2008 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Irony...

...they’re showing the Konerko, “I don’t run, I trot” commercial.

Shouldn’t that be, “I don’t run, I ground out weakly and hobble back to the dugout.”

(Dr. Crawdad to tell me I’m a horrible person in 3…2…1!)

I'm pretty sure he has an intern or two scanning the site...

...and letting him know when a Cubs fan happens to say anything about the White Sox. He’ll be here.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought about that intern angle too...

...only mine would conduct research. My first project would be to determine average time of how long it takes from when MDBNIU posts until Hammer replies…

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on May 27, 2008 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

And it's MDBNIU that won't come by when the Cubs win.

Especially when Soriano has a good game on offense (two hits and a walk, scored two runs – not a two home run game, but not bad.)

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

he's made some good adjustments at the plate.

Soriano, not MDBNIU; I have no idea how blue mike eats.

Edmonds says that feeling pressure is new for him.

Seems to be a nice enough person, well-liked the clubhouse, and he understands how bad he’s been so far.

I don’t think that he’s got anything left in the tank, but I don’t dislike the guy for it. Seems like this’ll be his last stop if he can’t pick up his offense.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 10:01 PM CDT reply actions

I would have preferred he not be a bust.

unfortunately, those of us not named blue mike appear to have been right on that.

Rosenthal is on.

Rosenthal says that he’s hearing Soriano is healthy, but that he certainly doesn’t look it – says it’s probably a confidence issue. Seems like he’s afraid of an injury. Says he doesn’t think it’s impacting the clubhouse, but that he thinks that Soriano needs to have a defensive replacement until his legs are 100%. Says that Soriano, despite his rep, is very open to doing whatever he can to help the team and would accept it if the Cubs proposed it to him.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 10:11 PM CDT reply actions

Doesn't feel like CF is an "urgent" issue for CF.

Cubs never looked at Reed Johnson as a starter, so could go look at players at deadline, but it would be a marginal upgrade. Pie may come back up, in his estimation.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Now he's talking about BABIP for the Sox.

Like I said – one of the more sabermagic-friendly writers. Doesn’t bring up LD%, though, which you need to look at when talking about BABIP for hitters..

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, what I believe he said

was that they (Cubs) didn’t envision him starting more than 125 games – not that they “never looked at reed Johnson as a starter.”

I think you mis-heard this.

by The E-Man on May 27, 2008 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Thank's man

I’ll believe that about Soriano when I see Lou pull the trigger. I mean Ramirez seems to think his legs are bothering him. The thing about Sori is he seems to “pout” (more so than others) when he’s not going good.
Anyhow let’s get the sweep tomorrow.

Scoreboard Watching

Cubs are technically tied for baseball’s best record with tampa bay and boston…
(Cubs are 31-21, tampa bay is 31-21, Boston is 32-22)

NL Central has the tightest top 3 so far with both the cards and stros 1.5 games back…

Gallagher pitched...

...a very solid game tonight, but I wouldn’t get overly excited about any pitchers performance in these conditions.

I like his arm, I just hope he learns how to master his breaking stuff a little better.

True that..

With decent weather conditions, this was probably a 10-8 game. Lots of well hit balls tonight that the wind knocked down.

Both pitchers were well aware of the conditions and pitched accordingly.

They probably pitch differently in different conditions, so you probably wouldn’t see AS many well-hit fly balls. Obviously you don’t know for sure, though.

by cwyers on May 27, 2008 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Still, defensively

Johnson, Edmonds, and Dome are a stronger outfield than Soriano, Johnson, and Dome.

Disagree

Edmonds has been getting lucky.

I think you are probably right

but it is a lot closer than I would have thought. Plus Soriano, Pie, Dome blows both those options completely out of the water.
