Cubs Throwback Uniform Day: Thursday, June 12

This press release came out two days ago and I, along with virtually everyone else, totally missed it:
The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves will play the first-ever throwback game at Wrigley Field on Thursday, June 12 at 1:20 p.m. In correlation with the 60th anniversary of Chicago Cubs baseball on WGN-TV, the Cubs will take the field in replica 1948 uniforms while the Braves will take part by wearing uniforms resembling those of the 1948 Boston Braves. WGN-TV will participate by presenting a special broadcast of the game to commemorate their 60th anniversary and the first throwback game in Cubs history.

Cool. I've always wanted the Cubs to do one of these, given the history of the team and the park. Let's just hope the Cubs and Braves don't play like it's 1948 -- that Cub team finished 64-90 and in 8th (last) place for the first time since 1925. The 1948 Braves won the NL pennant, their first since 1914, and the Braves were 16-6 against the Cubs that year.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Supposedly

BB and LK will also be dressed in 40’s gear. Food and Beverages will be sold at prices comparable to the 40’s for the first hour that the doors are open. $1 hot dogs and so forth.

Len mentioned this last night.

He did, however, throw in the caveat that he can’t guarantee 1948 gas prices.

Sweet

Though I wish they wouldve gone back to the Teddy Roosevelt era unis.

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

I would like to see the Cubs wear these uniforms

The 1915 Chicago Whales home uniforms. Maybe in 2014, to celebrate 100 years of Wrigley Field.

Too bad Daryle Ward won't be on the team in 2014...

That is a great idea.

Who would they play, though? Because, nothing is worse than a throwback game where only one team is wearing throwback uni’s… You’re left with, essentially, two options (barring interleague play). The Federal League had teams in Pittsburgh (the Rebels) and St. Louis (the Terriers), so the Pirates and Cards are options. I suppose you could also add the New York Mets, with the Brooklyn Tip-Tops.

If you go interleague, you’ve got Baltimore (the Terrapins), and Kansas City (the Packers).

Unfortunatly, the Buffalo Buffeds/Blues, Indianapolis Hoosiers and Newark Peppers would likely be out…

Sweet, I actually have tickets to that game

I was stoked when I heard Len and Bob talking about that yesterday. It will be my little sisters’ first times ever at wrigley. Now that get cheap food for the first hour to boot.

.... Edit #6: We're gonna go 156 and 6 this year, I can feel it!!!

I had awesome seats for that game

8 rows behind the Braves’ dugout, but alas, I can’t get to Chicago that day after all. Jeez!

Fans are suppose to get into it

By dressing in 1948 style. Al Capone-like?

by coral on May 29, 2008 11:19 AM CDT   0 recs

Capone died in 1947...

... so that’d be pretty creepy if everyone dressed up like the 1948 version of Capone

1948 Style

Hmmm, this one might be a little harder for the fans. I mean what do you wear a suit, tie, and fedora? There really isn’t a great fashion moment from 1948. Not like dressing for the 50’s or 60’s.

by StevenABQ on May 29, 2008 12:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Zoot suit?

Wikipedia says it was popular in the ‘40s.

Well, at least they picked a good year...

1948 is thelast time the Indians won it all.

Btw, I think that puts them in second place in terms of longest without winning a World Series…

I hope they

go all the way, and wear those stirrups accurately as well… Those (both teams) are thing of beauty!

see. I think

that long-pants should go away in baseball. Knickers and stirrup socks for EVERYONE ALL THE TIME.

And put a bend in that ball-cap bill, son…

by drewishdrewid on May 29, 2008 1:02 PM CDT   0 recs

I agree,

Just that most modern stirrups are a bit bland (here’s one place I give the Cardinals credit – they still have stripes on theirs!). My point was that I hope they wear accurate STRIPED stirrups (and that they force all the players to wear their pants pulled up (at least for this one game), since no-one pulled them down back in ‘48…

They pretty much

look like the modern home uniforms without the pinstripes. And while the Braves will have a “B” on their caps and that will be different, there isn’t much of a change in the uniform itself.

I’d really like to see a 1908 throwback jersey game—although I’d make an allowance for the modern game and allow numbers on the back of the jersey.

They should do this versus the Giants next season. Maybe the Ghost of Johnny Evers will show up again to throw out the Ghost of Fred Merkle when he doesn’t touch second base. Although we might have to do that in San Francisco (or against the Mets in the new ballpark in Queens—if the Mets are willing to wear Giants uniforms.)

At one point in baseball

Batters could request where they wanted a pitch to be thrown, and what type of pitch they wanted thrown. That would be one crazy game (especially at Wrigley with the wind blowing out!)

The 100th time has GOT to be a charm...

Show Us Your BCB T-Shirt

I ran this idea by Al, and he liked it. I thought I'd be fun to get folks to upload pictures of them in their BCB t-shirt. It gives more exposure to Project 3000 and is also a fun way to share who we are.

Al noted "It would be especially cool if people who don't live in Chicago would take the photo at a recognizable location in wherever they live. If you do this, remind people that it's just for fun -- I know some are sensitive about privacy, but if anyone is willing to post a pic like this, it'd be great."

So let's see it, BCB pride!

(p.s. if you all like the idea, recommend this FanShot... it will keep the exposure up and give folks who want to participate time to upload there photo.)

(p.s.s. Order your BCB/Project 3000 t-shirt here)
