I don't think Corey was a bad signing..
for the Reds However, using him not only as a starter, but lead-off man was extremely ill-advised, and reeks of classic Dusty Baker mindset. Leveraged properly, he could have actually been useful.
Any thoughts on what the thinking is about the Reds next step with him? I’m a little surprised that they didn’t DFA, so I’m curious what they feel they can still get from Corey this year.

I thought he'd be dfa'd also...
my guess would be as a 4th outfielder when the rosters expand in September or injury insurance. It’s too bad, I really liked his potential…I can see Dusty influencing the decision to keep him.

Perhaps they hope he can bounce back in AAA and become tradable...
I agree – Patterson has value as a defensive replacement and pinch runner. And when he’s on a hot streak (he’s a very streaky hitter), he’s a suitable guy in the bottom part of the order. But playing him everyday at the leadoff spot is a really bad idea.
I guess they’re keeping him around for one of three reasons:
1. Insurance in the event of an injury;
2. Replacement in RF for when Griffey is traded to Seattle; or
3. In hopes they can trade him for something at the deadline.
I’m guessing it is more likely to be #1 or #2.

Something About No. 20 and CF
C-Pat wore #20 for the Cubs and touted as the “CF of the future”. He flamed out after ‘04. Pie wore #20 for the Cubs and touted as the “CF of the future”. He hasn’t played well at the MLB level yet. It’s still way too early to tell if Pie will pan out. I hope Felix turns out better than Corey.

They're no Jerome Walton.

This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Maybe Felix Pie should have kept #17.

One thing about Bruce
and mind you I have seen very VERY little. But he does seem to be a intimidating looking hitter from the left side. Even if he never swung the bat he looks like a guy that will be pitched around.
Good luck to Jay. Sorry Corey.
BTW, random, I once was eating lunch in Nookies on Wells and Corey was in there (he lived in Eugenie Terrace WITH DUSTY) anyways I wanted to walk over and be all friendly and offer to pay his tip. If he OKd it I was going to tell him to lay off the first pitch and walk away. I have no guts.

Who cares
Corey Patterson is an awful baseball player. Has been for a very long time now.

The only time Corey showed flashes
was the first half 0f 2003 when he was hitting sixth. He was having an all-star caliber year and it looked like he’d really turned the corner before he broke his ankle. Problem was that the next year he was right back in the lead-off slot, where he’d demonstrated time and again that he was WAY overmatched. There’s a school of thought that plate discipline can’t be taught-you’re either a free swinger or you’re not. Patterson was a perfect example of this. And Dusty’s stubborn inability to accept this was one of his biggest flaws as a manager.

Oh good grief
Corey Patterson’s failure is 100% the fault of Corey Patterson. He was awful in Chicago, Baltimore and Cincinnati. Blame Dusty Baker all you want. He’s not the one who has been a massive bust in this league.

Corey was always...
a pretty average player. I’m surprised they did this.
