Open Thread: Cubs vs. Rockies, Thursday 5/29, 7:05 CT
Colorado Rockies at Chicago Cubs, May 29, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
This just in: Neal Cotts recalled from Iowa, Jose Ascanio returned. Ascanio did a nice job, but Lou wants two lefties. Strange, because he barely uses the one he has.
Topic of discussion: Crane Kenney says there is "no timetable" for the sale of the team and Wrigley Field:
Kenney said financial books will be sent soon to approved bidders.
"There's really no timetable. You'll probably hear that the books go out in the next few weeks and then a process of management interviews. Toward the second half of the season, you may have a new owner that has to get through the MLB process. And it's probably an end-of-the-year process," Kenney added.
Kenney said separate books for the ball park, the team and the Tribune Co.'s interest in Comcast SportsNet would be available.
"We'll have a book for the stadium only if that's where someone has their interest, and in the team only and in the Comcast SportsNet interest. If somebody wants three assets, they can get all three books," he said.
Been kind of busy this afternoon -- no real time for more links or info. Let's start this series with a win!

Jason Marquis has been getting... well, a tiny bit better over his last few starts. He really does need to step it up. We are stuck with him. He threw seven good innings in Denver on April 24 in a game that Kevin Hart gave away. Matt Holliday and Brad Hawpe hit him well, but that doesn't matter since those guys are on the DL. The Rockies have been starting a makeshift lineup all week and it shows -- they have lost 12 of their last 17.
Jeff Francis has a lifetime ERA of 9.58 against the Cubs and if you were to think that was because of Coors Field, you'd be wrong. Three of Francis' four lifetime starts against the Cubs have been in Wrigley Field -- he has a 9.17 career ERA at Wrigley. Oddly, he has no record -- all four starts wound up as no-decisions (the teams split the four games, two in 2005, one in 2006, one last year). He has never retired Derrek Lee -- D-Lee is 6-for-6 against Francis, all singles, and has also walked three times.
Today's game is on cable in Chicago and Denver, on EI, and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

I once heard...
that Jeff Francis threw a ball from Chicago to Benton Harbor. He swam across Lake Michigan and caught his own throw. Of course, he had the wind at his back that day, but it was still pretty impressive.

I hoped
we would have gotten a longer look at Ascanio. he seems to have some mean stuff and has looked good
We will, I think.
It’s nice to know that if someone gets hurt, you have a pitcher of that caliber available at Iowa.

Apparently Eyre has been overworked.
Right?
"Chicago baseball fans, who are composites of scar tissue and mortifying memories..." - George F. Will
LOL - yeah, those '1 batter' appearances are rough.
I don’t get the move either.
Wait a minute... who am I here?
What's really weird is that Eyre has been successful in his limited opportunities.
5 Ks, 1 BB, 0 HR, a tidy ERA of 0.00 – sure, only four innings of work, but it’s not like he’s getting lit up.
Maybe Lou heard left-handed

It seems to me

maybe they're working a trade for Eyre?
Or better yet, working a trade for COTTS, and they want to get his value up.

"I love when they play that Go Cubs Win song."
Why?
Wuertz catches so much unwarranted grief. He is an above average middle reliever. He has appeared in 70+ games in two of the past 3 seasons. OK, he doesn’t have the overpowering stuff of Ascanio but he still strikes out better than 1 per inning. If the Cubs sent Wuertz packing, there would be a long line to sign him.
Having Ascanio in AA is a nice option to have. I fully expect you will see Ascanio again this year.
I'm sorry but I just don't
have the love for Wurtz. He has an above average slider, but that’s it. His command has been terrible and I just don’t see him getting much better. I think the team has better options.

It's not like I have any great love for him
but he does his job. He’s a middle reliever. A lot better than the days of Roberto Novoa that’s for sure. Yes, Ascanio may eventually be better but leaving him in AA for now is fine.
Michael Wuertz is criminally underrated.
He’ll give you 70 innings or so of decent pitching for less than a million dollars or so a season. Okay, so that’s not going to light the world on fire. But yeesh. Do we have to throw him overboard for the new hotness so quickly?

My beef isn't so much with Wuertz
as it is with losing Ascanio, who looked like he may have been coming around (small sample size, I know). But I do agree that this will not be the last we will see of Jose, and concur that when Michael gets it going he is tough out there. And I also agree with the posts below that this is prolly more of a move based on the upcoming competition’s performance (or lack thereof) against lefties.

I'm not talking about getting anybody else. I
would have like to see Ascanio stay with the big club

I'm not buying into the "next Marmol" argument, but
I do think he has the potential to be a good late inning guy. I certainly thing that Lou would be a lot more prone to use him in a late inning situation that Wurtz. If there is a chance to spell Marmol. I’m for it.

"Hey bartender, Jobu needs a refill !!!!!!!" - Eddie Harris
by willie mays hayes' gloves on May 29, 2008 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions
That's what Howry is for
Wuertz is exclusively a 6th or 7th inning guy. If Marmol needs a break, Howry gets the call as in last night’s game.
I do agree though that long-term Ascanio looks like he could be a decent late inning guy.
But not at the cost
of dumping Wuertz. Lou for whatever reason, maybe the upcoming matchups, decided he wants another lefty right now. With that as the goal, sending Ascaio down is the only option.
Ascanio is a nice luxury to have in the org.......
...but his 1.80 ERA in his 4 outings was not as stellar as it appears on the surface. His first game he came in and pitched poorly and got out of it by the skin of his teeth…in his next outing-1 inning-1 run allowed..the next 2 outings were good…I’m glad we have him, but this looks to be a move involving CO and SD’s lousy job facing lefties (.240 and .211)
BBWAA's name should be changed to "Power in the hands of Fools"
I'm not gonna even look at his stats
I believe my eyes. Weurtz is underutilized. What’s the line on him switching his throwing arm and being effective.
"In all the categories that you pay the most attention to, except the loss column, we're doing very well" - Jim Hendry
I agree and don't have to look at the stats...
Last year Marmol #1 and Weurtz #2 in inherited runners scoring…..Whoever wants to tank Weurtz is nuts….He had a rough spot this year but….last time I checked, he is human. Damn, some people expect perfection. A hall of fame position player fails around 70% of the time. Give the pitchers a break…..Weurtz is a valuable asset.

Ascanio sent down for Cotts
the only reasoning I can think of is the two upcoming opponents are atrocious vs LH pitching.

Plus, maybe Lou just wants to get a look at the “new” Neil Cotts.

Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.
Great on Cotts
Now I can stop my “Free Neal Cotts!” campaign and start a “Free Jose Ascanio!” one.
But seriously, Ascanio doesn’t do anything that Howry or Wuertz can’t do, and Cotts throws left-handed. But if someone is looking for a right-handed middle-reliever at the trade deadlne, there’s no reason not to offer one of those two and call up Ascanio.
Of course, if the Cubs were really sneaky, they’d be looking at the upcoming schedule and calling up Cotts against left-handed hitting teams and then re-calling Ascanio against teams that were heavily righty.

Two Lefties in Pen
Eyre hasn’t been used much. I don’t think he’s still hurt. Cotts might get an extended look as a lefty in the pen. The Cubs need to see how these pitchers do now before the second half of the season starts. The team can’t solely depend on righty relievers. If Eyre and Cotts don’t pitch well, Chicago may have to trade for a LH reliever. The only other option would be Sean Marshall, but he’s had injury problems.

The 28-year-old Cotts is 2-0 with three saves and a 2.00 ERA (6 ER/27.0 IP) in 19 relief appearances for Iowa this season. He has struck out 33 batters in 27.0 innings, an average of 11.0 strikeouts per nine innings, and is limiting opponents to a .232 batting average, including a .206 average by left-handed hitters. He has not allowed an earned run in 11 of his last 12 outings, walking only five batters while fanning 19 in 15.0 innings in that span.

On a lineup note...
Why not have the pitcher bat 8th, have Soriano bat 9th, and Theriot 1st.
The 100th time has GOT to be a charm...
It really doesn't matter too much with Z and Marquis...
however, the Brewers are having a lot of success with it.

What does he do that is so bad other than get on base and score from first???
Have terrible range at arguably the most important defensive position.
Need there be more?
It’s not that the guy isn’t trying really hard, or that he’s spoiled or anything like that.
He just ain’t good enough to play short.
"This is the kind of thing … that makes you want to see the Chicago Cubs team lose." Marty Brennaman
Who do we have that is better?
Cedeno, maybe? But I would rather have Theriot playing over DeRosa. And for his terrible range he still makes a lot of great plays.
He makes them look great.
Cedeno has the most ability. He should be the starting SS. Theriot is fine for 2 starts a week, one at SS, one at 2B.
"This is the kind of thing … that makes you want to see the Chicago Cubs team lose." Marty Brennaman
why on earth
would you rather have Theriot over DeRosa? DeRosa is having a career year.
