Cubs offense
As of today these is where the Cubs offense ranks in the majors:
Runs: 1st.
Average: 1st.
OBP: 1st.
Slugging: 2nd.
BB drawn: 2nd.
Now, did anybody expect this? To me this has come completely out of left field. I never expected the Cubs offense to crack the top 10 in the majors let alone be the top offense. Being second in BB drawn is just crazy... almost seems like we are in some kind of parallel world. Now, the question is, is this real and can we expect it throughout the whole season? For the stat oriented guys, what was the projected rank of the team in these categories?

The only ones that really surprise me are OBP and BB drawn
Sure we all knew (or at least hoping) we were getting an OBP/BB machine in Dome, but I don’t think anyone would have imagined that the rest of the team would catch on so quick. Can’t say it’s all because of Dome, but I’m sure he’s been a great influence, directly or indirectly.
As for the other categories – sure, why not? I mean, look at our lineup – three bona fide sluggers (Soriano, DLee, ARam), another (Dome) with an excellent pedigree, albeit from a different league. Then you have a professional hitter with a good eye (DeRosa). Add in a slugging rookie with an impressive September last year. Plus, I think it’s fair to say our pitchers are better hitters than most in the league. Add it all up and it’s very much under the bell curve of possibilities that 7 out of the 9 spots in the lineup would be very productive offensively speaking. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Milwaukee and Philadelphia that might have comparable offensive lineups top to bottom. It’d be interesting to see where they rank right now. And of course, this is all just based on my perceptions as a fan – I don’t have any stats to back me up. So as Luis indicated, it’d also be interesting to see how the Cubs were projected to be.
As for can we keep it up? Probably not at a #1 or #2 pace in all those categories, But it wouldn’t surprise me if the Cubs were near the top in all of these at the end of the season. Sure, some of those guys are going to come down to earth a bit (ok, Theriot probably a lot). But look at Soriano’s crappy numbers to date – regardless of how you feel about him (attitude, spot in lineup, defense, guess hacking abilities extraordinaire), I think everyone will agree that his numbers will get a lot better the rest of the year .
Over the course of the season, this offense will be very productive. Of course, as we saw last year, that’s not always good enough – timing is critical as well. October is not a very good time to not be offensive…

IMO
we can keep up these numbers the rest of the season. Thus far, the Cubs are in these positions with Soriano doing virtually nothing offensively, an ARam is still heating up. Once Sori gets his head out of his rear (or back on track), I think we can easily maintain these MLB rankings offensively.

It's more surprising than you suggest...
Lee, Fukudome, Soto, and Theriot are greatly exceeding expectations right now. What they’ve done is not out of the realm of possibility, but it’s certainly not the mean expectation.
The other surprise is that we’ve been this productive virtually without any contribution from Soriano. He’s going to get better and the other guys will cool off some (most likely). I doubt we’ll sustain the best offense in all of baseball, but we’ll still be pretty darn good.

It all starts
with patience at the plate. I’ve already seen us work more 0-2 and 1-2 counts into walks than all last year. And, to me, that’s the difference. This offense is the most balanced I’ve ever seen the Cubs put together. And we’re putting up an incredible number of crooked numbers so far.
Can we continue. Well, offense is balance and every player seems to have bought into patience at the plate. So yes, we definitely can stay near the top in all those stats. This is a fun team to watch without needing any one or two players to carry the load. For the first time I don’t dwell on losses because I know we won’t be facing those long droughts usual to us. I will go so far as to predict us up by 10 games or more at the All Star game. That’s what I think about this team.

Problem
We can lead in runs, OBP and whatever else defensively and we’ll be over .500. We need to pitch better. Big Z and Dempster have been beyond solid (I still can’t believe I have Dempster in the sentence). Marquis has been Marquis AKA a #3 or #4 pitcher. Lilly has been solid the last 3 starts and we don’t know who the #5 pitcher is.
Teams don’t win it all by having solid pitching or offense, they have an adequate amount of both. That’s why Arizona is the best team in baseball right now.
The only reason I’m concerned is, power can come and go but solid pitching should stay solid. We haven’t been shut out or blow away in too many games. It just means we need better pitching overall.

Glad to see that we seem to be finally free of Dusty's influence
whether that was real or perceived. Living here in PHX, I was expecting the D Backs to falter some this year, thought that last year was a fluke. My gawd, these guys are even better than last year. They simply keep coming after you. I saw the first inning of the game on Weds. when Randy Johnson gave up 4 in the first. I figure, eh, this one is probably a loss. I watch the news at night and they came back and won 8-7 or something. Will they continue the torrid pace they are on? Probably not, but, boy, if it happens we meet them again this post season, it will be a war, for sure. We will have to be on the very top of our game, and I mean Lou, too.

This is because
D-Lee has got his stroke back, Theriot is playing over his head, Fontenot is playing over his head, DeRo is killing it, Soto is proving to be a stud, and they all werent expected to play like this except MAYBE Lee

I think that
the three key players in the lineup are DLee, Dome and Geo. DLee is really returning back to his ‘05 form which naturally makes this lineup better. Dome is an on-base machine that forces pitchers into the stretch which tends to have a snowball effect. The other batters are benefitting from that and are seeing better pitches to hit. Soto is just a good solid bat at the end of the order. He is fueling the secondary rally that comes after DLee and Ram cleanup the bases and Dome and DeRo get on base.

Seconday rally
Here are the Cubs ranks in the majors in terms of runs scored and RBIs in terms of batting order:
Batting #1: 9, 11
Batting #2: 12, 11
Batting #3: 1, 3
Batting #4: 2, 2
Batting #5: 1, 26
Batting #6: 4, 1
Batting #7: 3, 1
Batting #8: 13, 9
The most striking is out of the 5th spot (Fukudome) Cubs are 26th in RBI’s but first in runs scored. Batting 6th and 7th they are first in RBIs. It means Fukudome gets on and DeRosa and Soto drive him in. Obviously Lee and Ramirez are doing their part. Combine that and you have the best offense in the league.

Great set of numbers
It also shows that the top of the order is pretty average. The true strength of this offense is coming from spots 3-7

cubs
this is a really good hitting team but how long before the bullpen starts killing us???we need to go back to winning series instead of losing 2 of 3 which seems to be the norm lately.

well then
let’s win THIS series tonight!

I dont know if we will remain first in all of these categories
But we will remain in the top ten, this is where we were SUPPOSED to be last year. We are too close to this team to really realize what a talented group of players we have. GO CUBS!

I''ve asked this question before, but it's worth asking again here, I think -
- if the Cubs are top of the league in all these categories but don’t have the patience to develop a prospect who struggled with the bat the first few weeks up (but hasn’t the past two weeks), when will we ever be able to develop our youth?
