Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Minor League Wrap--May 29

The Cubs were 5 for 5 tonight.  It's a good feeling.

Iowa Cubs

A Casey McGehee walk-off home run sent the I-Cub faithful home happy, as Iowa beat the Memphis Redbirds, 5-4.

Kevin Hart rebounded from his last start to pitch 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks.  Hart struck out a very impressive nine Redbirds.  More importantly, he stretched himself out to 96 pitches, which is why he was sent down to the minors in the first place.

Andy Cavazos cost Hart the win, however, by allowing two runs  in 1.2 innings.  Gregory Reinhard, pitching in his first game after being promoted from Tennessee, pitched a scoreless ninth to get his first win of the season in the PCL.

Casey McGehee's blast in the ninth capped off a 2 for 4 night for him.  The home run was his sixth of the season.  Jason Dubois also hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to tie the game.  Dubois was 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly for three RBI on the evening.

Right fielder Andres Torres was 2 for 3 with a walk, a double and a stolen base.  Torres scored twice.

The Felix Pie watch:  0 for 4.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies recovered from a 5-0 deficit after two innings to come back and topple the Carolina Mudcats, 7-6 in ten innings.

James "The Intern" Russell had his first bad start in AA as he gave up five runs in the first two innings.  The Mudcats hit two home runs off of him in the first inning.  Russell settled down after the second inning and finished with a line of five innings pitched, five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four.

Dumas Garcia threw two scoreless innings in relief of Russell, allowing two hits and striking out three.  Michael Cooper got his first win of the season with two scoreless innings of his own, allowing no hits but walking two.

Scrappy, hunky and Jewish centerfielder Sam Fuld had his best night of the year, going 4 for 5 with a walk and an RBI.  Shortstop Matt Camp was 2 for 4 with an RBI and third baseman Matt Matulia was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Daytona Cubs

The Cubs pounded the Brevard County Manatees, 9-3.

Marco Carillo evened his record on the year to 3-3 by pitching five innings and allowing three runs, only one of which was earned.  Carillo allowed five hits and one walk while striking out five.

Rocky Roquet pitched another good two innings of relief, allowing only one walk.  Hopefully the arm problems that got Roquet off to a bad start this season are behind him now.

Second baseman Tony Thomas was 3 for 5 with a run scored and two RBI.  DH Ty Wright was 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored.  Third baseman Josh Lansford was 2 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored.

Center fielder Jonathan Wyatt hit his third home run of the season, a three-run blast in the first inning.  Wyatt was 1 for 3 with two walks on the night.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs roasted and covered in butter the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-4.

Chris Siegfried started and allowed two runs in four innings, both runs scoring on solo home runs.  Siegfried allowed four hits total, walked no one and struck out three.

Because he didn't go five innings, the win went to reliever Kevin Kreier, who also allowed two runs in four innings.  Steve Vento pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the year.

Second baseman Marquez Smith went 2 for 4 with his sixth home run of the season.  The home run was Smith's second in as many games and third in seven games.  Smith had two RBI and scored twice.

Shortstop Nate Sampson was 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base.  DH Elvis Lara hit his second home run of the season, a three-run tater in the second inning.  Lara was 1 for 4 with four RBI on the night.

Center fielder Cliff Andersen was 3 for 3 with a walk, a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI.

apologies if this has been previously covered and I missed it but...

does anyone know what the organizations plan for 2008 is with Josh Vitters? I’ve googled this but could only find that he joined Peoria on April 18, and then found on BR that he has only 14 at bats so far.

"Anytime I want to throw 95 or 96 (m.p.h.), I can throw it. But it's not how hard you throw in the big leagues. It's how you locate your pitches and learn to pitch the game." - If Zambrano has truly figured out how to pitch, look out.

He hurt his hand in his first week at Peoria...

and has been in Arizona ever since, I believe. I think the team is being extra-cautious with Vitters’ development.

The Aramis BB/K Watch: 32 walks to 33 strikeouts. Im not sure who the last Cub to have more bb's than k's was, but Im sure it was a very long time ago.

He's eligible

to come back any time. It’s been seven days. When he’s actually ready to pitch, I don’t know.

Hill

With Hill now listed as the starter tonight. what might his pitch count be? Earlier today, Randy Wells was listed as the starter on the I-Cubs site. The site now lists Hill.

Randy Wells Pitching for I-Cubs Tonight

I see that Randy Wells is scheduled to pitch for the I-Cubs tonight. Last night, I heard the AAA Redbirds announcer say that Rich Hill would pitch tonight. Evidently, there has been a change in plans.

What?!? No update on Matt "Hammerin Hank" Murton...

After all, there are legions of BCB faithful who insist apt comparison for Matt is Hammerin Hank Aaron himself.

And to think the rest of the baseball world (and me) think Murton is a punch and judy career Triple A ballplayer.

Hill Instead of Wells Tonight

The Iowa Cubs web site now has Rich Hill listed as the starter for the I-Cubs against the AAA Redbirds tonight.

Thomas

May be a “hit machine” as you put it, but he’s been a pretty unproductive one for the month of May, hitting only .235 with a .284 OBP. It got so bad he had to be benched for a while to get his head back on straight again.

He’s got a five game hitting streak now, and has had two hits or more in the last four. So maybe he’s coming out of his funk.

I hope so, because he could end up as the next Ian Kinsler. But he had a slump of over a month this season, and the season’s not two months old yet.
