Are we going to become the Boston Red Sox?
As a kid, I always counted the Red Sox as my second-favorite team. They didn't play the Cubs, so I was never in danger of torn alliances. They had a similar feel to my Cubs: rich history, cool older stadium, ravenous if tough-luck fan base.
Flash forward to this morning's ESPN SportsCenter: the DirecTV Play of the Month (or some similarly named advertorial segment). 3 choices for the month of May:
1. Big Brown winning the Derby and Preakness in impressive fashion. (Probably belongs, outside the horses=athletes debate)
2. Jon Lester's no-hitter. (Definitely belongs, great story, great drama, and it's a no-no)
3. Manny Ramirez' catch. (Uh...Lucky play by a poor defensive player, attention paid because it's 'Manny Being Manny' and he high-fived a fan)
Seriously, it's a month where baseball is going full boar, the NBA finals are on, NHL might (might) be relevant again, and every spring NCAA sport is wrapping up and our choices are 67% Red Sox for a Play of the Month? I'm not saying RJ should be in there, but compare Manny's catch to Reed's, look me in the eye, and tell me Manny made a better play.
/end rant.
So, here's my question: if certain things happen for a certain ball club in a certain midwest city in a certain fall month, what will the Cubs become? It's the 2nd or 3rd media market in the country, and we have a national fan base. Will the seats of Wrigley Field be filled with crisp, newly purchased Soriano jerseys and Cubs hats in every color of the rainbow except royal blue the following season? Will we annoy every man, woman and child who actually follows baseball? Will we be watching Monday Night Baseball (not Sunday night...Morgan/Miller...yechhh) and see live cut-ins to Wrigley whenever Zambrano grooms a cuticle?
I suppose the bigger question will be: will we care?

It's always been my position...
That I wouldn’t be a Cubs fan without next year. I’ve always halfway worried about what I would do with myself if the Cubs actually won the World Series. Would I start a new life? Would I actually get one?
I personally think that this season vindicates so many years of suffering and humiliation. Would it hurt me if some new passers-by fair weather types joined the bandwagon?? Not at all. The more the merrier.
Go Cubs.

I like your rant
I agree that Manny does not belong in that group. ESPN though is, never will change IMHO. So no matter what may happen to a certain team during a certain month….ESPN will always have their noses so far up the Yanks/BoSox asses.
Oh well, I could care less because I choose Len/Bob, or Pat/Ron over those ESPN douche bags any day.
Calm down.

I'd agree with the announcers...
I’ve heard other announcers and they’re SO BORING. I think the Cubs have some of the best announcers in the game.

The answer to the first question is "Yes, the Cubs will become the Red Sox."
And the answer to the second one, at least for me, is a resounding “No.”

I don't care about the bandwagon jumpers and the tourists.....
and all the other groups that make up the crowd at Wrigley. I can’t control why other people are there, but I can control why I am there. I know that I am there to watch a ballgame. If I am at Wrigley, I’ll be wearing one of my Cubs hats and a Cubs shirt. I’ll be sitting there with a beer, a hot dog, and a scorecard. The makeup of the crowd around me doesn’t change that one bit.

I sure hope so...
They’ve built a nice young team/system loaded with talented players that will be competitive for the forseeable future.
ESPN is what it is and has no desire to change – so no sense in worrying about that.
Pinkhats and the like are annoying – but there’re plenty of Trixies out there doing the same thing at Wrigley, and on the road for the Cubs.

Well considering I don't care about ESPN now
I won’t care in the future regardless of what the Cubs do. ESPN is located in Connecticut. Many of their employees live there. They are in the heart of Yankee/Red Sox country. They will always favor them.

I'm more concerned
That if we do end up doing something in the fall, the price of our ‘for sale’ ballclub will be so high that it will price out many of the local ‘cubs friendly’ interested parties. Regardless, I think that it will lead to increased ticket prices for sure.

It's not the face value that's so bad.
It’s the broker resale on the tickets.

Thank you...
...instead of traveling to Chicago to see two games this year, my family decided to go to only one. It’s not a huge jump or anything, but when paying an extra $35 for four tickets, the price of gas looks a lot steeper.
At least Soriano can afford to fuel his Hummer. Keep hitting, Sori, and we’ll keep paying you!

Sorry but that Manny catch is awesome
It’s probably the play of the year. Yeah, in terms of pure athletic ability it wasn’t as spectacular, but for God’s sake man – he high fived a fan, then turned and threw out the runner.
What isn’t awesome about that? More importantly, what other athlete would ever do such a thing? In what other sport could such a thing even occur?
That play is a distillation of not only what makes Manny Ramirez so bizarre and awesome, but also what makes baseball great.
Lester’s no hitter is a great story. Any athlete posting an accomplishment like that after battling cancer would find themselves in the same position. Look at Lance Armstrong’s endless hype if you don’t believe it. It’s one of baseball’s best individual accomplishments, and that he did it a year after recovering is amazing.

For me
Manny’s catch was impressive not because of the catch, or the high five, but the fact that he doubled up the runner on first as well. Combine those and you have something never done before in baseball. Now, I’m just as sick of the Sox and Manny as anyone, but it was impressive to say the least.
Based on wow factor, though? Gimme Reed’s any day of the week.

But
Manny didn’t actually double him off. He hit the cut-off who turned and threw to first to double him off.

True.
Regardless, my favorite throws of the year came in the first week against the Astros. Soriano rocket fired and got the runner at home as Z celebrated behind the plate. Later, Kosuke throws a fastball strike to Soto standing on the plate, who just turns to the hesitant runner at third like, “Yeah. Didn’t think so.”

Don't forget Pie's
throw against the Stro’s(I think) when he got that runner at 3rd. I wasn’t trying to burst your bubble or anything, more of a friendly correction.

Definitely.
I shall try harder in the future to negate the need for any corrections. ;)
And that’s what’s great about Pie. If he ever gets his bat working we got ourselves one hell of an everyday centerfielder.

Defensive CF is a good thing too.
You don’t have to have a big bat in CF. You just have to…have every single defensive tool Felix Pie has.

Dude, great post
I’m not gonna leave a huge comment, cause I think your rant was good enough.
Imagine if the Bulls, Hawks, Bear, and Cubs all start winning at the same time!!!

First, that was on the
(E)astern (S)eaboard (P)rogramming (N)etwork, correct? I think that always figures into the equation.
2nd…a no hitter by a cancer survivor? It’s not only a great accomplishment on the field, it’s a feel-good story all-around.
3rd…Manny is polarizing, he just happened to make play you don’t see every day.
To answer the questions: (1) I sure hope so, two of the last four WS championships went to BeanTown? I’d take that at Clark and Addison starting 2008. (2) I won’t care one bit. I’d love to have the Cubs be the ENVY of MLB.

Call us what you want
as long as you call us the World Series Champs! I dont care if every sox fan puts on a cubs hat or every cardinals fan says they are a lifelong cubs fan. If I can have a conversation with my dad and grandpa that includes the cubs are world series champs thats all that matters!

Red Sox
I have a buddy that’s a mega Sox fan, and I used to really like them…kind of a Cubs of the AL sorta feel. Amazing how things change. Now, I dislike them almost on-par with my Yankee hatred.
Their fans are smug. They throw pisspots of money around with no regard – the $50 million posting fee for Dice K was appalling – and now the media falls all over itself to cover everything they do. The worst is Peter Gammons. He makes me want to puke. I was happy for Jon Lester, but I actually found myself hoping the Royals would break it up, so we didn’t have to be inundated with more Red Sox garbage.
I dunno, maybe winning 2 series in the last few years makes me jealous of them. Believe me, I’d rather be where they are right now, having won two, than where we are!!!
Soriano should hit 5th. Period.

I am of the opinion that...
some of us have disdain for the Red Sox and their fans because we want to have what they do.
The only thing that I am very tired of is the “if we can do it, you can too” comments that I used to hear a lot of. WE WERE SO CLOSE!!!!!
Oh, and those “It’s Gonna Happen” signs that you see every now and again at Wrigley. Look at the font! Those were obviously made for someone else. Stop buying them!

Nah. Not that bad.
They won on the southside and I don’t see much difference other than some satisfaction. In the end, we won’t be anywhere near as godawful as the fans of the Bahstin Rehd Sawks. Plus, we pronounce our r’s and our biggest rival is a much smaller city so St. Louis fans visiting Chicago isn’t as big of a pain in the rear as New Yorkers in Boston.
We also have the White Sox to keep us humble whereas the Red Sox have an entire region with almost no rival consisting of parts of upstate NY, upper CT, MA, RI, VT, NH & ME. They can keep puffing each other up until they explode with noone bring them back
just my opinion.
